    Colombia is now projecting a new, positive image to the world after overcoming a past characterised by politically inspired guerrilla warfare and violent conflict with narco-trafficking cartels which had ravaged the country for decades. Even before the country’s transformation, other intermediate place institutions – cities and regions – had already taken significant steps towards territorial change and marketing. This paper outlines the processes involved in urban and social transformation in the city of Medellín and in the marketing of the coffee region, as illustrative cases of city re-branding and regional branding, respectively.

    The livelihood approach aims at the analysis, understanding and restrictions that the poorest people have to face in order to recover from difficult situations. The Department for International Development model is applied to an urban zone with the purpose of making an assessment of the livelihood of the district ’la Comuna 1’ in Medellin, Colombia, which has been recognised as the poorest and one of the most dangerous districts of the city. The case study presents both a quantitative analysis (macro) and qualitative (micro) analysis, as a mixed method that allows a more complete analysis and understanding of livelihood, and providing a deeper understanding of the district from the livelihood approach. The results indicate a stable growth of livelihood during the period of analysis.

    The article is a part of a broader discussion about municipal development strategies based on culture and innovativeness. It analyzes the potential and constraints of the approach, indicating conditions favorable for its effectiveness. To exploit the phenomena the author uses the examples of two Colombian cities, Bogota and Medellin. Over last two decades they have been an area of huge transformation. Thanks to adapted policies, it was possible to convert their image from brutal gang-war zones to vibrating metropolis aiming at peaceful social co-existence and infrastructural investments. The chosen cases serve as a background of synthetic description of developmental strategies based on culture and innovativeness. The analysis presents factors that are advantageous for their successful implementation. It also offers several points of critics, outlining some practical, social and institutional challenges that cities willing to adapt similar solutions may come across with.
    El artículo es parte de una discusión más general sobre estrategias de desarrollo municipal basadas en cultura y capacidad para innovar. Analiza el potencial y las restricciones de este enfoque, indicando las condiciones favorables para su efectividad. Para explotar el fenómeno el autor utiliza los ejemplos de dos ciudades Colombianas, Bogotá y Medellín. Durante las últimas dos décadas estas han sido un área de gran transformación. Gracias a las políticas adaptadas, fue posible convertir su imagen de zonas de brutal guerra entre mafias a vibrantes metrópolis aspirando a una coexistencia social pacifica e inversión en infraestructura. Los casos escogidos sirven como trasfondo para la descripción sintética de estrategias de desarrollo basadas en cultura y capacidad para innovar. También ofrece varios puntos críticos, delineando algunos retos prácticos, sociales e institucionales que las ciudades que deseen adaptar soluciones similares pueden encontrar.

    The present article takes as analyses from a mariological perspective of documents prepared by the Latin American Episcopal Council after the Second Vatican Council during the conferences from Medellín (1968) to Aparecida (2007). This text presents which images of Mary are present, preferred and accented in the CELAM documents, what is and how exactly the updating of Mariology teaching in the Latin American Church is done and how the existing situation on the Latin American continent has an impact on presenting in a different way the person and role of Mary in the life of the Church. Firstly, Mariology of the Second Vatican Council is presented. Subsequently the points discussed are concerned with the images of Mary and the teaching of the Latin American Episcopal Council on Mary contained in its documents. These documents emphasise and demonstrate the important role Mary has played in the life of the Latin American Church. This applies not only to the first evangelisation that began with the arrival of colonisers and missionaries on the Latin American continent, but also to the works of the new evangelisation undertaken today by the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. In these documents reflection on Mary is captured in the light of the mystery of Christ and the Church, which is according to the perspective outlined by the Second Vatican Council. These documents are at the same time an example of a creative development and application of the teaching about Mary of this Council to the Latin American reality. This creative development is the result, inter alia, of the CELAM Conferences of what the Church teaches about Mary from the perspective of the faith and Marian devotion of the Latin American Church and the people living in Latin America. As a result the Church’s teaching about Mary in the Church of Latin America and the Caribbean are brought up to date.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza dokumentów opracowanych przez konferencje ogólne rady Biskupów Ameryki Łacińskiej po Soborze Watykańskim II, tj. od Medellín (1968) do Aparecida (2007), pod kątem mariologicznym. W tekście zostały omówione obrazy Maryi obecne, preferowane i akcentowane w dokumentach CELAM-u oraz wyjaśniono, na czym polega i w czym konkretnie przejawia się aktualizacja nauczania mariologicznego w Kościele latynoamerykańskim, w jaki sposób sytuacja istniejąca na kontynencie latynoamerykańskim ma wpływ na przedstawianie w taki, a nie inny sposób osoby i roli Maryi w życiu Kościoła. W pierwszym punkcie została przedstawiona mariologia Soboru Watykańskiego II. W kolejnych punktach zostały ukazane i omówione obrazy Maryi oraz nauczanie rady Biskupów Ameryki Łacińskiej na temat Maryi zawarte w opracowanych przez nie dokumentach. W dokumentach tych została podkreślona rola, jaką odegrała Maryja i nadal spełnia w życiu Kościoła latynoamerykańskiego. Dotyczy to zarówno pierwszej ewangelizacji, która rozpoczęła się wraz z przybyciem kolonizatorów i misjonarzy na kontynent latynoamerykański, jak i dzieła nowej ewangelizacji podejmowanego dzisiaj przez Kościół w Ameryce Łacińskiej i Karaibach. W dokumentach tych refleksja na temat Maryi jest ujmowana w świetle tajemnicy Chrystusa i Kościoła, czyli zgodnie z perspektywą nakreśloną przez Sobór Watykański II. Dokumenty te są jednocześnie przykładem twórczego rozwinięcia i zastosowania nauki tego soboru o Maryi do rzeczywistości latynoamerykańskiej. To twórcze rozwinięcie jest wynikiem m.in. ujmowania przez konferencje CELAM-u tego, co naucza Kościół o Maryi z perspektywy doświadczenia wiary i pobożności maryjnej Kościoła latynoamerykańskiego. W ten sposób dochodzi do aktualizacji nauki Kościoła o Maryi w Kościele na terenie Ameryki Łacińskiej i Karaibów.

    Wydarzenie Soboru Watykańskiego II głęboko wpłynęło na przyszłość Kościoła w Ameryce Łacińskiej, a tym samym na kształt refleksji teologicznomoralnej subkontynentu. Celem artykułu prof. Tony Mifsuda SJ, profesora teologii moralnej na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Chile w Santiago, jest ukazanie recepcji nauki Soboru w Ameryce Łacińskiej oraz dokonującej się reorientacji teologii moralnej, która stała się jego bezpośrednim następstwem. W pierwszej kolejności autor dokonał reinterpretacji samego wydarzenia soborowego z perspektywy Ameryki Łacińskiej oraz ukazał wkład Ojców Soborowych pochodzących z tej części świata, zwracając szczególną uwagą na reprezentantów Chile. Kluczowym wydarzeniem dla recepcji Soboru na kontynencie południowoamerykańskim okazało się Zgromadzenie Generalne Biskupów Ameryki Łacińskiej (CELAM) w 1968 w Medellín. Podjęło się ono zadania odczytania nauki i ducha Soboru w lokalnej rzeczywistości.
    The Second Vatican Council marked profoundly the future of the Church in Latin America and, consequently, moral reflection in the subcontinent. In the first place, the paper discusses a Latin-American reading of Vatican II and its pastoral reception in the Medellin Assembly. In the second place, two complementary points of view (renewed morality vs. morality of liberation) are discussed, which enabled a systematic exposition of moral theology. Finally, some indicators are offered to help the reader understand the actual situation and possible future developments in moral theology in Latin America.
