On December 12, 2018, an outstanding Polish archaeologist – Professor Tadeusz Malinowski died in Poznań. He left an enormous scientific legacy, particularly studies devoted to the funeral rite in the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age (Lusatian and Pomeranian cultures). The article briefly discusses the major publications of the Professor, paying attention to the groups of issues they concern. His publications include a very wide range of works that are different in terms of form (reviews and polemics, monographs, catalogues, problem articles) and content (works from the Stone Age to the modern period, interdisciplinary and synthetic problems). A substantial part of the article is devoted to the connections of Professor Tadeusz Malinowski with the Rzeszów archaeological centre. It was him who provided the book collection (together with author’s prints), which became the basis of the Library of the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Rzeszów, created since 1999. Professor actively participated in scientific conferences organized in Rzeszów, he was interested in its scientific life, especially publications. He participated in the preparation of some of them as a reviewer. He highly evaluated the activities of the Institute of Archaeology, writing in 2016 that „it is one of the leading ones in our country”.

Strach jest uczuciem towarzyszącym człowiekowi zawsze, niezależnie od epoki oraz kultury, w której żyje. W swojej pracy chciałbym, opierając się na badaniach Bronisława Malinowskiego, przeanalizować czego i kogo boją się tubylcy z obszaru Nowej Gwinei oraz jak budowane są lęki wyspiarzy. W swoich rozważaniach skupię się w sposób szczególny na dwóch istotach, czarownikach bara’u i czarownicach mulukwausi, albowiem poza straszeniem tubylców pełnią oni również ważne funkcje społeczne w swoich wspólnotach. Zbadanie demonologii obszaru Nowej Gwinei będzie dla mnie również punktem wyjścia do zderzenia kultury wyspiarzy z kulturą europejską, w celu wyciągnięcia pewnych inwariantów, wspólnych kulturze pojmowanej w sposób atrybutywny prawideł i mechanizmów dotyczących strachu. Inspiracją metodologiczną dla tej pracy jest strukturalizm w rozumieniu Claude’a Lévi-Straussa.
Fear is ever-present in man’s history feeling, regardless of their époque or culture. In my paper I would like to examine what and whom the natives of the New Guinea fear as well as how the fears of the Islanders are constructed, basing my reflection upon Bronislaw Malinowski’s research. In my research I will focus particularly on two beings, sorcerers bara’u and witches mulukwausi, for they perform important civil functions in their communities. Researching upon New Guinea’s demonology will be a step further in my attempt to compare the Islander’s culture and the European culture, in order to bring out some invariant rules and mechanisms concerning fear, mutual to attributive culture. This paper has been inspired by Claude Lévi-Strauss’ structuralism.

W niniejszym omówieniu autorka przedstawia Historię pewnego małżeństwa, pozycję obejmującą zbiór listów Bronisława i Elsie Malinowskich. W artykule wskazano na pewne specyficzne formy wykorzystane w tej korespondencji oraz zwrócono uwagę na ich zakorzenienie m.in. w kontekście badań antropologicznych i kariery naukowej Malinowskiego. Ważny kontekst dla małżeństwa stanowi epoka, w której przyszło im żyć, ale również badania obcych kultur i nieustająca prawie przez całe życie autorów podróż. Małżeństwo, a raczej specyficzny charakter, jaki nadali mu Bronio i Elsie, jest swoistym pryzmatem, przez który oglądamy ich świat.
In the following analysis the author presents The story of a marriage, a collection of letters exchanged between Bronislaw and Elsie Malinowski, in order to show a character of their correspondence. In the paper author points out some specific forms used in the aforementioned correspondence and highlights its embedment not only in the context of anthropologic research and scientific career of Malinowski. The age they live in, the press, cities, but also foreign culture research and constant travels during their lives are just as important context. The marriage, or rather specific nature it was given by Bronio and Elsie, is a window that allows us to look into their world.

W pracy wskazane zostały kolejne etapy uczenia się (uczenie się zachowawcze przerywane szokami oraz uczenie się innowacyjne), przez które Malinowski pomaga przejść przyszłym etnografom. Na podstawie analizy tekstu wykazane zostały sposoby przekazywania informacji oraz typy wiedzy, które wykorzystuje Bronisław Malinowski. Autorka nawiązuje też do retorycznych umiejętności zdobytych przez polskiego badacza w czasie studiów na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim.
The article is on the subject of analysis inspired by structuralism, of didactic statements in the chapter Introduction. The subject, method and scope of this inquiry which is an entry to the book Argonauts of the Western Pacific. An account of native enterprise and adventures in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea. There are shown subsequent stages of learning (conservative learning interrupted by shocks, innovative learning), through which Malinowski helps future ethnographers to go without major difficulties. Based on analysis of the text there are pointed out ways of passing on information and kinds of knowledge used by Bronislaw Malinowski. Author refers to rhetorical abilities of formulating the text that polish researcher gained during his studies at Jagiellonian University.

The text is an analysis of the discourse upon pohotographic activity of Bronislaw Malinowski, who’s been performing field work on Trobriand Islands in years 1914–1918. Set of photographs taken by him during his research can be found in London School of Economy, and is available on the Internet site of the school’s library. Analysing text by commentators derived from the anthropologists environment, author organises questions and problems concerning discussions upon the polish anthropologist’s photographs.

Tekst dotyczy „listów uwierzytelniających” etnografa, czyli źródeł wywołanych przez badacza podczas badań terenowych, z których część pełnić może zarówno funkcję dokumentów legitymizujących etnograficzne analizy, jak i narzędzi badawczych możliwych do wykorzystania bezpośrednio w terenie, np. podczas wywiadów. Ich sporządzenie i opracowanie umożliwia także weryfikację zebranych i uzyskanych od informatorów danych, której mogą dokonać później również inni badacze. Dane statystyczne, tabele synoptyczne i chronologiczne oraz różnego rodzaju zestawienia mogą zostać zamieszczone w monografii terenowej. Uporządkowanie danych oraz ich przedstawienie w formie tabeli bądź wykresu może również posłużyć jako skrótowy wykład ważnych, skomplikowanych koncepcji teoretycznych. Tabele synoptyczne i chronologiczne ułatwiają ponadto czytelnikowi dokonanie syntezy treści monografii, bowiem choć dotyczą zazwyczaj wycinka rzeczywistości kulturowej, to prezentowany jest on w szerokim kontekście i zawsze w odniesieniu do innych, badanych i opisywanych zjawisk. Tylko część „listów uwierzytelniających” została przez Malinowskiego zamieszczona w Argonautach. Była to świadoma decyzja badacza, dzięki której – paradoksalnie – możemy sobie uświadomić, że napisanie najprostszej nawet monografii z badań terenowych wymaga długotrwałych przygotowań oraz wypracowania badawczego zaplecza, uwzględniającego namysł nad metodą badań, dostosowanie technik badawczych, znajomość uprzednich teorii. Znajdujące się w Argonautach i innych dziełach Malinowskiego tabele, tablice, diagramy i rysunki można również zestawić z propozycjami jego poprzedników, np. Edward Burnetta Tylora, prekursora zastosowania metody statystycznej w badaniach kultury, czy Augustusa Henry’ego Lane-Fox Pitt-Riversa, tworzącego klasyfikacje wytworów kultury materialnej. Takie zestawienie ukaże nam wagę badania każdego przedmiotu, elementu, czy aspektu kultury we właściwym mu kontekście. Uwidoczni także odmienność funkcjonalnego podejścia Malinowskiego do badania kultury od wyraźnie atomizujących koncepcji ewolucjonistycznych, czy dyfuzjonistycznych. „Listy uwierzytelniające” mogą być wreszcie potraktowane jako ujęty w graficzną formę (tabeli, wyliczenia, tablic) przewodnik po lekturze Argonautów z uwagi na konkretny problem związany z wymianą kula.
The paper elaborates on the topic of ethnographer’s letters of credence, or the topic of primary sources of an ethnographer obtained during the field work. Part of said sources may function as documents legitimizing the ethnographic analyses, as well as research tools which may be used directly during the field work, for example, while making interviews. Making and compiling them also allows verifying the gathered from the informants data, which can also be verified further by the other researchers. Furthermore statistic data, arrays of synoptic, chronologic arrays and various kinds of configurations may be placed in the field work monograph. Concise arrangement of the data and presenting them as an array or a chart may in addition serve as a brief presentation of the important, complicated theoretical conceptions. Arrays of synoptic and arrays of chronologic improve the process of performing the monograph’s synthesis by a reader. Although, those are usually concerning a certain part of the cultural reality, it is presented referring to the vast cultural context and always applied to other presented and researched phenomenon. Only a certain part of the letters of credence was placed by Malinowski in the Argonauts. It was a conscious choice, which, in paradox, allows to lead the readership to the awareness, that completing even the simplest fieldwork monograph is a process requiring prolonged preparations and creating a certain research background, including reflection upon the research method, adjusting the research techniques, knowledge of the previous theories. Arrays, boards, diagrams, and drawings which can be found in the Argonauts and other Malinowski’s works, can be compared to the propositions of the former researchers. For example, Edward Burnett Tylor, precursor in using the statistic method in cultural studies, or Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers, creator of the material culture artefacts classifications. Such combination demonstrates the importance of each artefact, element and aspect of culture, in its proper context. Furthermore, it exposes the uniqueness of Malinowski’s functional method against atomism of evolutionary and cultural diffusionism theories. Letters of credence can be, lastly, an Argonauts guidebook, formulated in graphical representations (charts, enumerations, tables) concerning the kula exchange.

Artykuł wpisuje się w myślenie o antropologicznej rzeczywistości terenowej w jej interakcyjnym charakterze ustrukturowanym m.in. przez kształt kontaktu kulturowego. Zestawienie wiedzy zawartej w Dziełach Bronisława Malinowskiego ze szczegółowymi informacjami z dzienników, notatek terenowych i listów pozwoliło na opisanie zarówno wzoru idealnego, jak i zbliżenie się do wzoru rzeczywistego relacji, jaka wykształciła się między antropologiem a tubylcami. Pytanie tylko, w jaki sposób konfrontacja kilku systemów praktyk i wyobrażeń wpłynęła na proces badawczy i kształt antropologicznej wiedzy? Wychodząc od analizy tendencji współczesnej antropologii do dyskursywizacji problematyki spotkania, autor stara się prześledzić różne aspekty antropologicznego kontaktu kulturowego Bronisława Malinowskiego z Massimami, co ma pomóc we wskazaniu najważniejszych kulturowych i historycznych uwarunkowań kształtu relacji pomiędzy antropologiem a „jego ludem”.
The article fits into thinking about the fieldwork’s reality in its interactive nature, structured by, among others, the form of the cultural contact. Bringing together the knowledge collected in Bronisław Malinowski’s Dzieła and detailed information gathered in diaries, fieldwork notes and letters, allows to perform a reconstruction of an ideal pattern, approximate to real pattern, of the relation which was born between the anthropologist and the natives. The question is, how did the confrontation of multiple systems of praxis and beliefs affect the research and nature of anthropological knowledge? Beginning with the analysis of the meeting subject discourse present in modern anthropology, the author tires to investigate various aspects of Bronislaw Malinowski fieldwork. He attempts to construct an analysis which would pinpoint cultural and historical conditionings of the nature of relation between the anthropologist and “his people”.

The article is focused on the intellectual significance of the theory of myth developed by prominent Polish anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski within his anthropological approach known as functionalism. Th e author argues that Malinowski already in the first half of the 20th century anticipated the main trend within the later studies on myth. Like many influential myth-theorists of the next generations, Malinowski recognized the elements of rationality within mythical thinking. Both his emphasis on the integrity of culture as well as his opposition to diff usionism and evolutionism resonate with the perspective of structuralists in the second half of the 20th century. According to Malinowski, myth and science as the parts of culture serve mainly for the basic biological needs of the human body. Th e more elaborated vision of the functionality of myth has been proposed later in the philosophy of mythology of German poststructuralist Hans Blumenberg. Despite that, Malinowski’s attention to the function of myth reflected and formed the general tendency of contemporary science of myth. Th is tendency presupposes the “de-archaization” of myth in contrast to the progressivist vision of myth as entirely “irrational” or “paralogical” thinking. Th e author also analyses how the intellectual heritage of Malinowski is used in the recent studies made by contemporary Polish and Ukrainian scholars.

The paper revisits two theories from the cultural anthropology. The first theory is by Bronisław Malinowski, and the second one by Karl Homann. Malinowski criticizes economism and moralism. I present further stages of this criticism, with special importance placed on the concept of homo oeconomicus. Malinowski demonstrates how moral norms are implemented in primitive cultures by means of magic, cults, customs and rituals and rites. Malinowski also argues for the significance of cultural institutions in stabilizing the functioning of primitive communities. These institutions sheltered the communities from the kind of crises that are also experienced in the present times, thus, giving the older schools of thought in cultural anthropology their deserving place within the contemporary thought.

The paper presents two theories from the area of cultural anthropology. The first is B. Malinowski, who criticized economism and moralism. I present further stages of this criticism, with special importance placed on the concept of homo oeconomicus. Malinowski also showed how moral norms are implemented in primitive cultures by means of magic, cults, customs and rituals and rites. Another important section is devoted to Malinowski’s analysis of how cultural institutions were important for stable functioning of primitive communities. They sheltered those communities form crisis of the kind that we experience today. The second theory is economical ethics of K. Hofman, one of the newest achievements of German business ethics. So works of cultural anthropology are worth being read again.

In her review of Marta Rakoczy’s book, Słowo – działanie – kontekst. A research-writing strategy of the publication is introduced: the ethnographic concept of the language by the Polish anthropologist is presented and compared to other theories, his contemporaries as well as the latter ones.
