Opis:: In one of the most important churches in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), there is a panel containing several paintings. They are exact copies of photographs showing Emperor Haile Sellasie I during the war against Italy (1935-1941). The paint-ings were copied from frequently published, and thus well-known, photographs, which served imperial propaganda to show the Emperor’s role in fighting for Ethiopia’s independ-ence. Using the paintings as source material, it is the aim of this article to discuss specific propagandistic methods applied in Ethiopia under Haile Sellasie to transmit a message about power and history, and to present the intended image of the Emperor to his subjects.

Opis:: The article is dedicated to a series of war reports from Ethiopia published between 1935 and 1936 in one of the most important Polish newspapers, Gazeta Polska. Although the author was one of the most prolific and respected Polish reporters, his text was never published in book form for various reasons. However, it deserves to be remembered, not least because it stands out from other Polish reports of this war. The author had the opportunity to participate in the events of both sides of the conflict, which enriched his perception of the reality described and led to the evolution of his opinions from objectivity to clear pro-Italian sympathies.
L’articolo è dedicato a una serie di reportage di guerra dall’Etiopia pubblicati a cavallo tra il 1935 e il 1936 su uno dei più importanti quotidiani polacchi, “Gazeta Polska”. Sebbene l’autore sia stato uno dei reporter polacchi più prolifici e apprezzati, il testo non è mai stato pubblicato in forma di libro per vari motivi. Non solo per questo merita di essere ricordato, anche perché si distingue dagli altri reportage polacchi di questa guerra. L’autore ebbe l’opportunità di partecipare agli eventi da entrambe le parti del conflitto, il che arricchì la sua percezione della realtà descritta e portò all’evoluzione delle sue opinioni dall’obiettività a chiare simpatie filo-italiane.

Opis:: Etiopia jest krajem śródlądowym usytuowanym w Rogu Afryki graniczącym z: Erytreą, Sudanem, Somalią, Kenią i DSibuti. Jest jednym z najstarszych państw w Afryce. Etiopia utrzymała niepodległość przez cały okres swej historii z wyjątkiem krótkiej okupacji włoskiej w latach 1936-1941. W 1974 r. junta wojskowa DERG obaliła cesarstwo proklamując powstanie socjalistycznej republiki. ReSim pułkownika Mengistu Haile Mariama utrzymał się do 1991 r. Etiopia pogrążona jest w niekończących się konfliktach wewnętrznych, sporach granicznych z Erytreą oraz problemami gospodarczymi. Państwo to mogłoby jednak odgrywać rolę ważnego sojusznika Zachodu w regionie Rogu Afryki, zagrożonego fundamentalizmem islamskich z Somalii i Sudanu.
Ethiopia is a landlocked country situated in the Horn of Africa bordered by Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Djibuti. It is the oldest country in Africa and one of the oldest in the world. The ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule with the exception of a short-lived Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941. In 1974, a military junta, the DERG, deposed Emperor Haile Selassie and established a socialist state. The regime of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam was toppled in 1991 by a coalition of rebel forces. Ethiopia is known for its periodic droughts and famines, its long civil conflict and a border war with Eritrea. Addis Abeba could be a very important ally of the West in the Horn of Africa dominated by jihadist movements from Somalia and Sudan.
