    Aim/purpose – The aim of the paper is to identify key indicators from selected international rankings that might be used while formulating a university’s strategy; especially in the context of Polish higher education regulations and requirements. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on literature review, accompanied by qualitative-comparative analysis of the most popular international rankings of universities; comparative analysis is also applied to methodologies accommodated by these rankings and to the organization of their output. Findings – Modern universities face growing pressure from the intensifying processes of internationalization and have to search for effective methods of increasing their competitive advantages worldwide. Thus, a well-defined and implemented strategy should play a significant role in this process. Research implications/limitations – The very recent discussions concerning the proposed new Polish Law on higher education and science prove that there is still limited understanding of the importance of university strategies. The government emphasizes the significance of improving international competitiveness of Polish higher education institutions; thus, the proper use of international rankings seems to be vital in responding to governmental visions. The research findings should help universities in the development and execution of strategies. Originality/value/contribution – The paper combines analysis of international rankings and strategy development/formulation. Therefore, it might be a useful tool for the administration of Polish universities and should help in understanding of university organization.

    This article explores the reasons behind the high economic and social rankings for Finland. It also reflects on why Finland is considered the “happiest” country in the world (according to a World Happiness Report). Using empirical data from two studies - an article comparing high-andlow-tax countries, and the aforementioned recent World Happiness Report - it compares Finland with its Nordic neighbours and other Western, especially Anglo-American, countries. The essay outlines a so-called “Finnish model' and looks for the roots of this model. Comparing measures in several dimensions - effort, culture, institutions, and economic and social outcomes - the essay tries to find characteristics that are particular for Finland. Education, innovation, and economic security, as well as trust, gender equality, resilient conflict solutions, and geo-historical luck, are crucial to Finland's success. Three notable Germans - Luther, Hegel, and Marx - have influenced Finnish culture and society in different ways. Is Finland the country that comes closest to the ideal - “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” (Marx, 1875).

    The Polish economy has proved that it works better in difficult (read crisis) conditions than the most economies in the region as well as the economies from the group of most developed economically states. Poland in the group of OECD was shown in parallel to Australia and New Zealand, which represent on that lists and rankings relatively better position than Czech Republic or Slovakia. The achieved results are effect of different transformation strategies which were applied in Poland in comparison to remaining economies from the region. This is evidenced by relatively high and still in rise position of Poland in different rankings: growth and job creation, competitiveness, political risk, dynamics of changes, rates of growth, macrostabilization etc. Good economic performance determines the social and political climate of the country, enabling it to continue changes which are required by a catching up economy in global and restructuring world economy. Poland was consequently in her transformation strategy preparing its economy to work in conditions which are characterized by more intensified cooperation than the one of the remaining countries in question. The Polish experience of transformation was conducted in a different way than the strategies of Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The evident success of the applied strategy in light of a number of states which wait in a subordinated manner to join the main stream economy. In the past IMF, World Bank in their yearbooks published regularly. This experience indicates clearly that Poland is able to prepare the countries of the two European dimension (Eastern and Southern) for training. This can has a specific impact on preparation of such changes with participation of Poland. Poland can use its own experience to build-up the EU’s Transformation Compendium. Poland is also able and willing to support by knowledge, models and expertise processes of systemic changes and after development in states which try to enter the road of changes, growth and catching up.

    In the face of the progressing globalization, ever closer co-operation and merging economies, the issue of investment attractiveness of particular countries becomes a more and more topical problem. We are talking about a certain potential of economies in the sphere of attracting and next supporting foreign direct investments. The possibility of finding a foreign investor plays a significant role especially in the case of those countries whose capital supplies are insufficient. And Ukraine may be considered such a country. The aim of the article is to examine the problem of investment attractiveness of Ukraine – to define the factors that stimulate and de-stimulate the influx of foreign direct investments to this country. In the first part of the article, treated as an introduction, the current data concerning foreign direct investments in Ukraine are presented, and the second one reviews international rankings that concern the question of investment attractiveness, defining the position of Ukraine in the international arena.

    All BRICS countries are the regional leaders. But now they are transformed to the largest players in the global arena. The places of the BRICS universities in the international rankings will be characterized. The positions of the BRICS countries in the international rankings of innovation capabilities will be characterized in comparison with the positions of the leaders of the global economy in this article. It is the fact, that China occupies a higher position in the international rankings, compared with the rest of the BRICS countries.
    Wszystkie kraje BRICS są regionalnymi liderami, lecz teraz są w trakcie przemian do największych graczy na światowej arenie. W artykule przedstawiono międzynarodowy ranking uwzględniający pozycje uniwersytetów krajów BRICS, a także ranking krajów BRICS w zakresie innowacji w porównaniu do liderów światowej gospodarki. Faktem jest, że Chiny zajmują wyższe miejsce w międzynarodowych rankingach wśród pozostałych krajów BRICS.

    There are many new leaders – not only regional but also global, and this is the indicator of emerging multipolar world. Issues of the development of BRICS and the position of these countries in the world economy was considered in this context. Aim of the paper is to show role of China in BRICS group, which does not establish a sensu stricto system Paper is focusing on CGI index. The comparison of the positions of the leading countries of the world economy and the BRICS countries in international rankings of the innovation development was held in this article.
    Wskaźnikiem kształtowania się spolaryzowanego świata jest pojawienie się wielu nowych liderów – nie tylko regionalnych, ale również globalnych. W tym kontekście muszą być rozważane kwestie rozwoju BRICS i pozycji krajów do niego należących w gospodarce światowej. Celem tego artykułu jest wykazanie znaczącej roli Chin w grupie BRICS, która nie stanowi systemu sensu stricto. Artykuł skupia się na indeksie CGI. Przedstawiono także porównanie pozycji wiodących krajów gospodarki światowej i państw BRICS w międzynarodowych rankingach rozwoju innowacji.
