Opis:
The authors deals with the health of the EU population. The health of the Slovak population has improved since 2000, but it still lags behind the EU average. Slovaks live longer, but differences in life expectancy by gender and socio-economic groups persist. In the Slovak health care system, care is provided to all residents, although access to it is limited in some regions and quality and efficiency can improve in many areas. Most Slovaks report good health, but there are differences according to income groups. About two thirds of the Slovak population report good health, a ratio similar to the EU average, but higher than in most neighboring countries. However, according to their own health assessment, there are differences in socio-economic status.

Opis:
Background. Suboptimal health status (SHS) is recognised as a subclinical, reversible stage of a chronic disease. Previous studies have proposed that SHS may be related to poor lifestyle factors, as well as work-related and study-related stress. Objectives. The present study was designed to assess the relationship between health status, general distress and job-related risk factors. Material and methods. A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 606 current workers in Klaipeda, Lithuania, who had no history of clinically diagnosed disease. The SHS score was derived from SHSQ-25; the General Symptom Distress Scale (GSDS ) was used for distress evaluation. Results. 90% (547) of respondents revealed an optimal health level. The main domains of SHS status were fatigue and mental status. SHS was related to cardiovascular, digestive and musculoskeletal symptoms, as well as to frequent infections and allergy. SHS was more prevalent in women. The overall health status depends on the following job-related risk factors: the professional potential to grow, rest, deadlines, competition, work experience, income, etc. Conclusions. Health status was related to distress and mainly manifested itself through fatigue, anxiety and sleep disturbances. Resting hours, professional potential to grow, risk in another person’s life and work in public have a significant influence on SHS

Opis:
Fragile states have several key characteristics: (1) uncertain control of territory and/or not having full control of legitimate use of force; (2) decline in legitimacy of collective and authoritative government decisions; (3) difficulties with providing public goods and services; (4) problems with interacting with other states as a member of the larger international community. Data on The Fund for Peace’s Fragile State Index from 2016 are used to measure the dependent variable. The independent variables of interest are health and nutrition, to determine if these factors-as influences on citizens’ behavior-would have anything to do with fragility. This paper, then, explores the role of two biosocial variables in affecting degree of fragility. Results are discussed as well as implications.

Objectives This study has aimed at identifying prevalence of injury-occurrence in 24 pre-professional-ballet-dancers (females, 16–18 years of age), and identifying the associations between the body-built and prevalence of injuries. Material and Methods The sample of variables included: body mass, body height, and 3 somatotype characteristics (mesomorph, ectomorph and endomorph) and data on injuries over the preceding year. Results Dancers were mostly ectomorphic-mesomorph (endomorphy: 2.6±0.54, mesomorphy: 3.99±0.77, ectomorphy: 3.23±0.54). The most commonly injured locations were the foot (17% of all injuries) and ankle (17%). Majority of the injuries occurred while practising but 37% of hip-injuries occurred while performing. Ankle-injuries resulted in longest absence from ballet. Endomorphy was related to ankle-injury (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4–2.3), ectomorphy to foot injury (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1–2.9), and body-mass to injury to the toes (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.4–3.1). Conclusions The results of this study allow for recognizing those dancers who are particularly vulnerable to injuries of certain body location. A more profound analysis of the possible mechanisms that lead to hip-injury during performance is needed. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(1):151–159

Introduction and objective. Research focused on the monitoring of selected heavy metals in ewes’ blood. Concentrations of selected toxic elements, lead, cadmium and zinc, in ewes living near an environmentally-loaded area, concerned 15 ewes (aged 3–4 years) in good physical condition, during the spring of 2014 and 2015 in the eastern part of Slovakia. The aim of the research was to determine the concentration of selected heavy metals and state the correlations of selected heavy metals in ewes’ blood. Materials and method. Within the period of 2 years, 15 ewe were evaluated. Ewes’ blood samples were collected twice during the spring season from a farm located in area Spiš, eastern Slovakia, and then analysed for heavy metal contents. In the area under investigation, contamination with heavy metals was assumed as a result of intensive agricultural development and former mining activities. The level of selected heavy metals in the experimental group of animal blood was determined using an optical spectrophotometry. Results. Statistical analyses were carried out using the Statistica programme. The significant differences between means were calculated by the statistical method of the non-parametric Mann-Whitney´s U test. The statistical test experimental group of ewes in 2014 and 2015 confirmed the presence of selected heavy metals in ewes. The measured values of Cd (P=0.0003), Pb (P=0.0200) and Zn (P=0.0018) showed significant differences when comparing the years 2014 and 2015. Conclusion. The obtained and analysed blood samples confirmed the presence of selected heavy metals in ewes from area of Spiš in eastern Slovakia, which belongs the sub-region or is among the localities environmentally burdened. The conclusions are centred on the population’s interest and concern for the environment, as well as on the preoccupation with factors that affect the satisfaction of basic needs, the local agricultural development and former mining activities.

Introduction. Quality of life (QOL) is an important aspect of life, reflecting health and conditioning the well-being of older adults. Maintaining the QOL is essential in times of demographic changes which resulting longer life spans, and consequently an increased proportion of older adults in society. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life and its basic determining factors in the elderly living in rural areas of south-eastern Poland. Material and method. The study was conducted on 973 respondents aged 60–80 years living in rural areas of south-eastern Poland (Podkarpackie Region). The research tool used in the study was the WHOQOL-Bref and a questionnaire on personal characteristics and health. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica version 10. Results. All quality of life domains assessed were above the median values of the scale. The highest values were found in the social domain (67.35 ± 17.31) and the lowest values in the physical domain (58.74 ± 14.80). All the quality of life values decreased with an increase in age and increase in number of chronic diseases in a given person. A higher quality of life was found in subjects who were physically and socially active. Conclusion. The study stresses the impact of modifiable determiners of QOL. Interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of older adults should involve interdisciplinary monitoring of health, early treatment of diagnosed problems, and promotion of physical activity and daily life activities.

Opis:
The role of the public and private sector in health care systems remains one of the crucial problems of these systems' operation. The purpose of this research is to identify the relationships between the performance of health systems in CEE and CIS (Central and Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent State) countries, and the mix of public-private sector in the health care of these countries. The study uses a zero unitarization method to construct three measures of health system performance in the following areas: (1) resources; (2) services; and (3) health status. The values of these measures are correlated with the share of public financing that represents the public-private mix in the health systems. The data used is from World Health Organization’s Health for All Database for 23 CEE and CIS countries and comprises the year 2010. The results show that the performance of health systems in the countries investigated is positively associated with a higher proportion of public financing. The strongest relationship links public financing with performance in the area of services production. For policy makers, these results imply that health systems in post-communist transition economies could be susceptible to a decreasing role of the state and that growing reliance on the market mechanism in health care can deteriorate the operation of these systems.

Objectives Occupational stress is a common complaint in nurses, who perceived more sense of effort-reward imbalance (ERI). Suboptimal health status (SHS) is a state between health and disease. However, the correlation between ERI and SHS is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of SHS and ERI and evaluate the relationship between ERI and SHS in clinical nurses by a cross-sectional study. Material and Methods The current cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey at Dongping People’s Hospital in China. A total of 633 completed surveys were received. Effort-reward imbalance was measured by subscales of the ERI questionnaire. SHS was measured by the Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire – 25 (SHSQ-25). The relationship between ERI and SHS in nurses was subsequently assessed by Spearman’s correlation coefficient and logistic regression model. Results The mean age of the optimal health status (OHS) group (M±SD 26.3±7.3 years) was younger than the SHS group (M±SD 30.3±6.9 years). The prevalence of SHS was 54.5% (345/633). Female nurses aged ≥30 years, a junior college or university graduate educational level, smokers, and nurses without regular exercise were at a higher risk of SHS. In Spearman’s correlation analysis, ERI reflected by the effort-reward ratio was correlated with SHSQ-25 score (r = 0.662, p < 0.001). In logistic regression, ERI was strongly associated with SHS after potential confounding factors adjusting (OR 27.924, 95% CI 22.845–34.132). Conclusions The prevalence of SHS was significantly high in clinical nurses. Administrators should pay more attention to health status of female nurses aged ≥30 years, with a junior college or bachelor’s degree, smoking, and without regular exercise to reduce the SHS and ERI.

Opis:
The most significant problem, in ecological vegetable seed production, is low, capacity which is mainly caused by high rates of seed infection with fungi and a shortage of effective biological agents to eliminate pathogens. Therefore, proecological methods of seed quality enhancement are being researched, with the aim of increasing the profitability of seed production by improving the seed sowing value. The aim of the work was to evaluate the effectiveness of pulsed radio frequency on the seed quality of selected vegetable cultivars. The results obtained from research conducted in laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions indicate the protective effect of pulsed radio frequency treatment of seeds by a reduction in the incidence of beetroot, lettuce and garden dill seed-borne fungi, and an improvement in their health status and germination capacity. The presowing application of pulsed radio frequency resulted in a 60-80% reduction of seed infestation with fungi, depending on the plant species. This treatment improved the dynamics of seed germination, plant emergence, growth, and increased the chlorophyll content and gas exchange in leaves. The most beneficial results were obtained in beetroot, in which the problem of seed production is associated with a high rate of seed infestation with mycoflora and the presence of germination inhibitors in the seed coat. The results indicate the high efficiency of the applied pulsed radio frequency and its usefulness in ecological and integrated seed production.
