This paper presents the issue of reciprocity in the context of gratitude. The rule of reciprocity basing on the psychological and social compulsion of giving and receiving gifts and services is one of the most important and permanent regulators of social, economic and political life. There are various concepts of reciprocity. It starts from the ancient principle of reciprocity (do ut des − I give that you may give) and ends with contemporary theories of interactionism, theories of social exchange or the philosophy of meeting. Regarding the concepts of gratitude, the rule of reciprocity may be expressed as the norms of social life inducing people to symmetrical behavior. The author points some of its factors.

The main aim of the current study was to examine whether and how life satisfaction is related to propensity to forgive one’s transgressor. Additionally, it also explored the relationship between life satisfaction and other chosen psychological variables, such as optimism and gratitude. The study involved 338 persons between 16 and 83 years of age. For the measurement of psychological variables the following research tools were used: Satisfaction With Life Scale, Transgression- Related Interpersonal Motivations Inventory, Gratitude Questionnaire, and Learned Optimism Test. Among the study participants satisfaction with life was positively correlated with the conviction about a permanent and ubiquitous nature of positive events, optimism and gratitude. The study also observed a negative correlation between satisfaction with life, the motivation for revenge and avoidance motivation, and the perception of a permanent and ubiquitous nature of adverse events.

W artykule podejmuję temat relacji ruchów szeroko rozumianego nurtu „pro-life” i kultury terapeutycznej. W pierwszej części tekstu przyglądam się praktykom komunikacyjnym organizacji „pro-life” i „pro-choice”, z jakimi kontaktują się kobiety w nieplanowanej ciąży. Następnie omawiam koncepcje „traumy” i „stygmy”, które stanowią zaplecze teoretyczne podejmowanych przez działaczy i działaczki obu opcji światopoglądowych interwencji o charakterze konsolacyjnym i wzmacniającym. W kolejnej części tekstu prezentuję trzy inicjatywy nurtu „pro-life”, kierujące swą ofertę do osób z doświadczeniem aborcji: rekolekcje, program „Powrót i odnowa” oraz terapię NEST. Szczególną uwagę zwracam na potencjał redefinicji pojęć i sytuacji społecznych, jaki mogą mieć te inicjatywy. W podsumowaniu analizuję społeczne funkcje narracji o stracie oraz świadectwa, a także sposób, w jaki pojęcie wdzięczności pomaga rozszerzyć zakres terminu „pro-life”.
In the article I discuss the relationship between the broadly understood “pro-life” movements and therapeutic culture. In the first part of the text, I look at the communication practices of “pro-life” and “pro-choice” organisations that women in unplanned pregnancy come into contact with. Then I discuss the concepts of “trauma” and “stigma”, which provide the theoretical background to the consolatory and empowering interventions undertaken by activists of both worldview options. In the next part of the text I present three initiatives of the “pro-life” trend, addressing their offer to people with abortion experience: retreats, the “Return and renewal” program, and NEST therapy. Particular attention is paid to the potential of these initiatives to redefine concepts and social situations. In conclusion, I examine the social functions of the narrative of loss and testimony, as well as how the concept of gratitude helps to broaden the scope of the term “pro-life”.

W tekście odnoszę się do klasycznego tekstu Melanii Klein "Zawiść i wdzięczność" i współczesnej dyskusji w ramach psychoanalizy na temat tych pojęć psychologicznych. Psychologiczną pracę nad przywracaniem wdzięczności pokazuję poprzez doświadczenia Ocalałego z Auschwitz. Odnoszę się także do aktualnego dyskursu społecznego, w którym konstrukty zawiści i wdzięczności pełnią ważną funkcję.
The article refers to "Envy and Gratitude", the classical text by Melanie Klein, and a contemporary discussion within the range of psychoanalysis dealing with those psychological concepts. Psychological work on restoring gratitude is demonstrated by referring to the experiences of an Auschwitz Survivor. The author also discusses the current social discourse in which constructions of envy and gratitude play a significant part.

I stand for a philosophical writing engaged in an ethical relation with discussed authors. The relation despite its obvious immeasurable value is based on a concrete context of the encounter, performed by a signifier. Gratitude is the phenomenon, which describes properly the ethical relation, for it at once opens the absolute dimension of an unique other and expresses some onthical content of gestures, gifts and signs, which Myself receives from the others. The article criticises Buber’s theory, due to its ignorance of difference, corporeality, linguistic sign, passivity, etc. For that reason I use Derridian concepts, that enhance (but consequently deconstruct) Levinasian principles.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between gratitude and certain components of well-being which are conducive to affirming life. Additionally, we also compared how experiencing joy impacts those components of well-being. A randomly chosen 1/3 of the participants was asked to recall an event from their past when they felt grateful. Another 1/3 was asked to recall an event from their past when they felt joy. The final 1/3 of the participants was the control group. Next, all participants filled in the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Then (taking turns) they completed the Social Ties Scale and the Social Trust Scale. Finally, all participants estimated the amount of beneficiary experiences and gratitude they had received in life. The results of the study indicate that both gratitude and joy enhance happiness, and that gratitude and joy play an important, although different in some respects, role as contributing factors to happiness. The results indicate a positive relationship between the balance in gratitude experiences and the examined aspects of well-being.

The paper has an exploratory character and provides an overview of selected perspectives on both downstream (“as you scratch someone else’s back, I will scratch yours”) and upstream (“pay it forward”) versions of indirect reciprocity. Sociobiologists’ point of view is presented, as their work has contributed to the fact that the reciprocity of openness to a third party has become a subject of research in other scientific fields. Next, the concept of downstream and upstream indirect reciprocity is explained, according to the nomenclature used by selected mathematical biologists and economists. Finally, a psychological view of both forms of indirect reciprocity (positive and negative) is given through theoretical considerations, examples of empirical studies, as well as selected mechanisms and determinants that may underlie the phenomenon.

Every human being has some experience of giving and receiving. Although this is a universal reality which exceeds culture, religion and ethnicity, it is only recently that research has begun to focus on the subject of gratitude. This article seeks to analyze gratitude from the perspective of modern psychological research. Specifically, it examines obstacles to the expression of gratitude and suggests strategies to enhance it. The research literature clearly supports the important role that gratitude plays in many areas of life, especially with regard to well-being, health, coping with stress, and cultivating pro-social relationships. It is very important to know what contributes to disturbances in experiencing and expressing gratitude, as well as factors that enhance it.

„Jedyną możliwą więzią z Ameryką, właściwą formą amerykańskiej miłości, jest wdzięczność” mówił Godofredo Iommi w wykładzie Eneida-Amereida (1981) w którym słowo la gratitud pojawia się kilkanaście razy, wydaje się kategorią kluczową. W poemacie Amereida (1967) wdzięczność jest warunkiem wolności. Uczynienie z wdzięczności filozoficznego fundamentu dekolonizacji Ameryki zdumiewa, prowokuje, jest trudne do zrozumienia. Tekst nie jest jednak poświęcony wyłącznie interpretacji kanonicznych tekstów Szkoły z Valparaíso. Autorkę interesowało bowiem to, jak wdzięczność objawia się w praktykach poetyckiego zamieszkiwania Ameryki tj. w realizowanych od 1984 roku wyprawach w głąb kontynentu tzw. travesía.  Artykuł powstał na podstawie obserwacji sporządzonych na przełomie listopada i grudnia podczas travesía w Curarrehue (Araukania, Chile) oraz doświadczeń z travesía w Cochrane (Patagonia, Chile, 2013) amerykańskiej doktorantki Doris M. Reiny Bravo. Autorka zauważa, że w obu przypadkach uzyskanie statusu obserwatora travesía łączyło się ze szczególnym poczuciem wdzięczności i lęku, co związane jest z fenomenem daru ale też transakcji. Barbaruk podjęła się próby opisu związanego z obserwacją travesía (badań terenowych) afektu: tego z którym jechała do Curarrehue i z którym wróciła. Nadrzędną ramą jej relacji z travesía stało się pytanie o wdzięczność jako narzędzie badawcze, o jej wpływ na sytuację badawczą i język naukowy. Autorka sugeruje, że wdzięczność może być traktowana jako cnota epistemiczna.
"The only possible bond with America, the proper form of American love, is gratitude," said Godofredo Iommi in the lecture Aeneida-Amereida (1981), in which the word "la gratitud" appears several times, seems to be a key category. In the poem Amereida (1967) gratitude is the condition of freedom. Making gratitude the philosophical foundation of America's decolonization is astonishing, provocative, and difficult to understand. The text, however, is not solely devoted to the interpretation of the canonical texts of the School of Valparaíso. The author was interested in how gratitude manifests itself in the practices of poetic inhabiting America, i.e. in expeditions into the depths of the continent, the so-called "travesía". The article is based on observations made at the turn of November and December during a travesía in Curarrehue (Araucania, Chile) and experiences from a travesía in Cochrane (Patagonia, Chile, 2013) by American doctoral student Doris M. Reina Bravo. The author notes that in both cases, obtaining the status of travesía observer was associated with a special sense of gratitude and fear, which is related to the phenomenon of a gift, but also a transaction. Barbaruk attempted to describe the affect associated with the observation of travesía (field research): the one with which she went to Curarrehue and with which she returned. The overriding framework of her relationship with travesía became the question about gratitude as a research tool, about its impact on the research situation and scientific language. The author suggests that gratitude can be treated as an epistemic virtue.

Celem badania było wskazanie zależności między emocją wdzięczności oraz poczuciem długu a innymi emocjami, związków między emocją wdzięczności i długu a wdzięcznością dyspozycyjną, a także wykazanie, czy wdzięczność koreluje z poczuciem długu i czy w różnym zakresie wiąże się z innymi emocjami oraz określenie, komu badani są wdzięczni i wobec jakich osób najczęściej odczuwają dług. Badaniem objęto 148 studentów pielęgniarstwa, ratownictwa medycznego i pedagogiki (100 kobiet, 48 mężczyzn). Zastosowano narzędzie do pomiaru wdzięczności dyspozycyjnej GQ-6 Michaela E. McCullougha i Roberta Emmonsa w polskiej adaptacji Marleny Kossakowskiej i Piotra Kwiatka, skalę własną nasilenia emocji oraz manipulację eksperymentalną służącą wzbudzeniu emocji wdzięczności i długu. Wdzięczność była dodatnio powiązana z radością silniej u kobiet. Tylko u kobiet poczucie długu wiązało się z radością i z poczuciem winy. W warunku wzbudzenia wdzięczności nie wiązała się ona z poczuciem długu, natomiast w warunku wzbudzenia poczucia długu wiązał się on dodatnio z wdzięcznością. W obu warunkach badani częściej odczuwali emocję wdzięczności niż długu. W warunku wzbudzenia wdzięczności badani odczuwali istotnie więcej wdzięczności niż emocji negatywnych. W warunku wzbudzenia długu badani odczuwali więcej poczucia długu niż pozostałych emocji negatywnych. Badani częściej odczuwali wdzięczność wobec osób najbliższych, częściej też odczuwano wdzięczność niż dług.
The aim of the study was to show the relationship between the emotion of gratitude and the sense of debt and other emotions, as well as the relationship between the emotion of gratitude and debt and dispositional gratitude. The purpose of the study was also to show whether gratitude correlates with a sense of debt and whether it is related to other emotions to a different extent. The aim of the study was also to determine to whom the respondents are grateful and to whom they most often feel indebted. In the study, there were included 148 students of nursing, emergency medical services and pedagogy (100 women, 48 men). The GQ-6 tool of Michael E. McCullough and Robert Emmons’ dispositional gratitude was used, in the Polish adaptation of Marlena Kossakowska and Piotr Kwiatek, the own scale of the intensity of emotions and experimental manipulation aimed at arousing the emotions of gratitude or indebtedness. Gratitude was positively related to joy more strongly in women. Only in women was indebtedness associated with joy and guilt. In the condition of gratitude, gratitude was not associated with a sense of debt, while in the condition of indebtedness, indebtedness was positively related to gratitude. In both conditions, the respondents more often felt the emotion of gratitude than indebtedness. In condition of gratitude, the respondents felt significantly more gratitude than negative emotions. In the condition of indebtedness, the respondents felt more debt than other negative emotions. The respondents more often felt gratitude towards their loved ones, and more often they felt gratitude than debt.

Purpose: Gratitude is an interdisciplinary concept frequently explored in positive psychology, which recognizes gratitude as one of the seven transcendent character forces that promote well-being and life satisfaction. The purpose of the conducted research was to develop the concept of gratitude toward the organization and prepare a tool to study this phenomenon. Methods: The study was cross-sectional. Participants were 802 employees from various organizations. Results: The Gratitude Toward the Organization Scale has a good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α was 0.91). Factor analysis confirmed the two-factor structure of this tool. The dimensions of gratitude toward the organization are distinguished as: (1) gratitude as a commitment to reciprocity and (2) gratitude as a moral norm. The construct validity of this measure was confirmed. Gratitude toward the organization correlated positively with job satisfaction, affective commitment to the organization, organizational justice, and perceived organizational and supervisor support, while being negatively correlated with intent to leave the organization. Conclusions: The obtained results confirm very good psychometric properties of the Gratitude Toward the Organization Scale as a valid and reliable measure for studying the gratitude of employees, which can be successfully used by researchers in Poland.

Wdzięczność jest jednym z najrzadziej badanych aspektów interakcji międzyludzkich. Częściowo dlatego, że w refleksji naukowej wdzięczność i dawanie prezentów są na ogół traktowane jako przejaw korupcji. Badania na temat wręczania upominków personelowi medycznemu, prze- prowadzane w polskich szpitalach publicznych, pokazują, że pacjenci potrafią bardzo precyzyjnie odróżnić łapówki od prezentów wręczanych jako wyraz wdzięczności. W AT bardzo trudno znaleźć refleksję na temat wdzięczności, jednak Erskine przyznaje, że potrzeba okazania wdzięczności wy- daje się być jedną z najważniejszych potrzeb relacyjnych, jakie zauważył. Wdzięczność nie jest ła- twa do przeanalizowania w kategoriach AT, ponieważ jest to postawa zarówno emocjonalna, jak i kulturowa. Jako emocja jest rodzajem radości, jednej z czterech autentycznych emocji opisanych w teorii Erica Berne’a. Jako reakcja kulturowa aktywuje w równym stopniu trzy Stany Ja: Rodzic, Dorosły i Dziecko. Co więcej, potrzeba okazania wdzięczności w postaci życzliwego działania wo- bec osoby, do której ktoś czuje wdzięczność, to okazja do wykonania kroku w kierunku intymności.
Gratitude is one of the rarest researched aspect of human interaction. Partially because in scientific reflection gratitude and gift giving is generally treated as a sign of corruption. Research held in Polish public hospitals on the topic of gift giving to medical staff shows that patients very precisely differentiate bribes from gifts as a token of gratitude. In TA there there is very difficult to find any reflection about gratitude, however Erskine admits that need of showing gratitude appears to be one of the most significants relational needs he noticed. Gratitude is not easy to analyse in TA terms because it is both an emotion and cultural attitude. As an emotion it is a kind of joy, one of the four authentic emotions according Eric Berne. As a cultural response it activated equally three Ego States: Parent, Adult and Child. What is more – a need for showing gratitude in a form of benevolent action toward the person someone feels gratitude for and this is an occasion to make a step towards intimacy.

Opis:
Thanking, belonging to expressive speech acts, according to the classification by Searle (1969), can be regarded as worth exploring due to the fact that gratitude, as a component of value systems, is as the fundamental emotion underlying social relations, and thus reflected in the language, especially fixed expressions, crucial for linguistic politeness. The aim of the present research is to compare explicit and implicit formulas (as referred to by Kerbrat-Orecchioni 2001) of the act of thanking in French and Polish. The examined material is composed of exemplary utterances retrieved from blogs, social networking sites, and internet fora. The methodology used includes studies on speech act theory (Austin 1962), typology of speech acts (Searle 1969), as well as research papers on language politeness by Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1996, 2001) and gratitude (SieradzkaBaziur 2017). Moreover, the author refers to comparative studies on politeness acts conducted up to now (Romero 2000, Rădulescu and Scurtu 2003, Perez 2005, Grossmann and Krzyżanowska 2018, Meng 2012). The author classifies collected explicit and implicit utterances, juxtaposing French and Polish examples and providing an analysis based on pragmatic parameters. As a result, the author creates a corpus of utterances used for expressing gratitude along with a study on diverse thanking formulas in both languages.

Wychodząc od pewnych inspiracji źródłowych wespół z Zbigniewem Benedyktowiczem, podjęty będzie problem wdzięczności, jako bądź uwarunkowanej moralnie lub religijnie, bądź raczej „niewdzięcznej” - w znaczeniu uwolnionej od wszelkiej aksjologii. Z analizy znanych w kulturze „przypadków” objawia się wdzięczność, jako cud, rewolta na polu religii i sfery antroposa, zarazem jako jej „pierwiastek” z grupy obejmującej i zbawienie i radość.
Starting from some inspirations together with Zbigniew Benedyktowicz, will be addressed the problem of gratitude, as either morally or religiously conditioned, or rather "ungrateful" - in the sense freed from all axiology. The analysis of cases known in culture reveals gratitude as a miracle, a revolt in the field of religion and in the sphere of anthropos, at the same time as its "element" from the group embracing both salvation and joy.

Za punkt wyjścia, w swoich rozważaniach nad znaczeniem składania ofiary (z) wdzięczności w starotestamentowym rytuale, przyjmę psalmy dziękczynne, które rozpoznaje się zwykle przez obecność w nich słów pochodzących od hebrajskiego rdzenia jada, czyli dziękować. W Psalmach tych także można znaleźć takie zwroty jak hodu – dziękujcie czy toda – dziękczynienie. Dodatkowo w pierwszym rzędzie słowo hoda znaczy rozpoznać i uznać. Wdzięczność będzie zatem nabierała charakteru dziękczynnego tylko wtedy, kiedy będzie ona w sobie zawierała czynność rozpoznania i uznania. Psalmy dziękczynne zbudowane są również na przeciwstawieniu tematycznym śmierć-życie prowadzącym do diametralnego zwrotu w egzystencji. Wyrazem takiego stanu są ofiary, które według midraszu Rabiego Kahany oddziałują na sferę kosmiczną. Ich składanie jest tożsame wtedy ze stwarzaniem nieba i ziemi. Co więc leży u podstaw kultu ofiarnego w Tanachu? Co go ukierunkowało i nadało mu znaczenie? Jaka jest rola wdzięczności w tym procesie i do kogo jest ona dzisiaj kierowana?
The author chose as the point of departure for his reflections on the meaning of the sacrifice of thanksgiving in the Old Testament ritual thanksgiving psalms, recognised usually by the presence of words originating from the Hebrew jada – give thanks. Such phrases as hodu – give thanks or toda can be also found in the Psalms. In addition, the word hoda’ah means, first of all, to recognise. Gratitude thus will assume the character of thanksgiving only when it contains the activity of recognition and appreciation. Thanksgiving psalms are also built on a death-life thematic contraposition resulting in a diametrical turn in existence. The expression of such a state involves sacrifices which, according to the Rabbi Kahane Midrash, affect the cosmic sphere. Offering them is then identical with the creation of Heaven and Earth. What, therefore, consists the foundation of the sacrificial in the Tanach? What steered it and endowed it with significance? What is the role of thanksgiving in this process, and to whom is it addressed today?
