This article deals with the pastoral activity of the Franciscan monks in Grodno from the time of the foundation of the monastery in 1635 until 1975.The patron Eustachy Kurcz bestowed the monks with resources that helped them survive numerous instances of historical turmoil and chaos. The time of the Partitions of Poland witnessed almost a complete demise of the Grodno monastery until 1906. When Poland regained independence, the pastoral vigour of the Grodno Franciscans was rekindled. Among the pastoral initiatives of the time, there was the publishing of Rycerz Niepokalanej [The Knight of the Immaculate Virgin Mary], so well-known for the editorial efforts of Maksymilian Kolbe, who in the years 1922-1927 worked in Grodno as a journalist and a priest. The death of Father Dionizy Klimczak, shot dead by the Nazi in 1943, marked the turbulent history of the monastery during War World II. The geopolitical shifts in the wake of the War caused it that Grodno was incorporated within the USSR. One of the most outstanding promoters of “Peace and Good” at that time was Father Arkadiusz Waltoś.

The ecclesiastical hierarchy, being a reality founded by Christ, is also subjected to historical evolution. The article discusses the history of pastoral service in the Church by analyzing the meaning of the word presbyteros in the writingsof the Apostolic Fathers. It is obvious that the term which is derived from the Greek language indicates a person who exercises a pastoral ministry in the church community emphasizing his seniority, but not necessarily old age. Only for Papias „presbuteros” is a real old man who, because of his age, is a living witness to the time of the Apostles. The authority of the witness made him a guardian of the faith, that is to say „episcopos”, the bishop. The writings of Ignatius of Antioch and Clement of Rome suggest that in their community „the elders” should not be really old, they form a group which has a different role from that of the bishop. It seems that with the end time of the bishops/old-men in the Church two realities were formed: the episcopacy and the colleges of the presbyter. The establishment of relations and the division of powers between the „presbuteroi” and the man appointed bishop of his church community was therefore one of the most important questions of Christianity in the time of the Apostolic Fathers.

The article outlines the main directions of the evangelization of the Church Fathers in the 5th and 6th centuries and the numerous obstacles which they encountered in their pastoral ministry. The spreading of pagan practices, magic and all kinds of superstitions were still visible even among the baptized people. Another problem they had to face, no less difficult to overcome, was a moral dissolution, as well as rampant alcoholism. Hence their sermons so often featured merciful God, ready to forgive every person. They also pointed some ways to deepen one’s faith. Thus they tried to form a Christian society, guided by the spirit of the Gospel in every sphere of life.

This paper is an attempt towards better understanding of the fatherhood of incarcerated men. In particular, research results are reported concerning a tool to measure the paternal involvement of incarcerated fathers – Questionnaire of Paternal Engagement ZK (KOZ-ZK). An exploratory factor analysis has revealed three dimensions of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, namely (i) paternal engagement during the time of imprisonment, (ii) paternal engagement during the leave from prison, (iii) father’s accessibility. In a pilot research project examining the psychometric properties of the questionnaire took part 215 incarcerated fathers. The questionnaire contained 22 items and was proved to have good psychometric properties. Additionally, a qualitative survey was conducted using the KOZ-ZK questionnaire and structured interviews. It turned out that the questionnaire properly reflected different intensities of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, important role being played by the relationship of the men with the mothers of their children.

This paper examines the relationship between different aspects of the parental leave use by German fathers and their subsequent engagement in childcare. The relationship between the use of parental leave by fathers and their time spent on childcare on weekdays in subsequent years is broken down by three different details to parental leave use (duration, timing and partner’s employment status during parental leave). It also examines whether fathers who take parental leave provide more childcare even before they take the parental leave compared to fathers who do not use parental leave. The study is based on German panel data and applies group comparisons with t-test and difference-in-differences analysis. The results demonstrate that if fathers take more than two months’ leave or if they take parental leave alone they spend on average more time on childcare after the leave period than fathers not using parental leave. The differences to fathers with no leave use are strongest for fathers who take advantage of leave alone. i.e. when their partner is working. We also discover that on average, fathers on leave (alone) are not inclined to more childcare before the parental leave period compared to fathers not using parental leave.. Based on identity theory and the undoing gender framework, the cautious interpretation of the results is that fathers who are on leave for more than two months or were on leave alone experience a shift in their commitment to childcare during the leave period.

The paper analyzes selected apophthegms that are part of two collections: alphabetical and systematic. These texts had initially circulated in oral transmission between 330–460 AD and were written down in the mid-fifth century. In this form they are available up until today. The purpose of the analysis at hand is to try to find traces of oral transmission in the apophthegms, which has been attempted by considering the rather rich literature on oral cultures and oral transmission. The studies by E. A. Havelock, J. Goody, and W. B. Ong have proven most useful here. Oral memory in the recorded apophthegms was discerned at the level of the text itself, its form, structure, composition, the subject matter taken up, the importance of the spiritual guide, etc.

The author presents the results of a study on selected aspects of fathers’ imprisonment from the perspective of their children. The study included 72 children, aged 12 to 18 years, whose fathers were imprisoned in penal institutions in Poland. The analysis of results revealed that all of the children knew that their fathers were serving a prison sentence. Most children report unpleasant emotions related to this fact, such as regret, sadness, anger, and shame. On the other hand, the vast majority of the children understood that their parent had made a mistake and that they were bearing the consequences of their act. The vast majority of respondents maintained contact with their fathers (e.g., visitations, telephone calls, letters), but the frequency of these contacts was quite low. The children claimed that during contact with their fathers they experienced various emotions: from nervousness, sadness, and shame at where their parent was, to satisfaction with and joy at the possibility of meeting the father. The vast majority of prisoners’ children reported that the frequency and quality of their contact with the father was inadequate and suggested changes. Taking account of prisoners’ children’s perspective, the study encourages further local research addressing this issue.

This study focuses on analysis of the discourse of solidarity during the current migrant crisis, with special attention paid to the second half of 2015 and the first months of 2016. We start by looking for the sources of the concept of solidarity in the writings of the founding fathers of the European Union and in the existing EU treaties. We then try to decide to what extent the political narratives of the crisis are based on these sources and in what ways they deviate from them or use them in a superficial way. Finally, we verify our research assumptions and offer an overview of the academic debate on the subject.

Według historyków udział Zakonu Braci Mniejszych (bernardynów) w powstaniu styczniowym był znaczący. W świetle źródeł historycznych zapisali oni piękną kartę w zrywie narodowym. Uznać to trzeba za zryw szlachetny, jak stwierdził bernardyński historyk Hieronim Eugeniusz Wyczawski, będący wyrazem umiłowania Ojczyzny i wolności. Z drugiej jednak strony nie sposób nie dostrzec, że w podejmowanych przez bernardynów akcjach było dużo nierozwagi, brak umiejętności organizowania pracy konspiracyjnej i niemało łatwowierności. W niniejszym opracowaniu przedstawiłem działalność bernardynów w Królestwie Kongresowym i na ziemiach bezpośrednio wcielonych do rosyjskiego imperium, gdzie był duży ucisk narodowościowy i gdzie wybuchło krwawe powstanie styczniowe 22 stycznia 1863 r. w Królestwie Polskim i 1 lutego 1863 r. w byłym Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim. W omawianym okresie wystąpiły wielorakie ograniczenia życia zakonnego, również dla prowincji bernardyńskich. Władze zaborcze nie tylko deklarowały niechęć wobec tej formy życia, ale stopniowo ograniczały i likwidowały struktury zakonne, pojedyncze klasztory i całe prowincje. Kasatom klasztorów towarzyszyły grabieże ich mienia, zabór archiwów i bibliotek, wykorzystywanie pomieszczeń kościelnych i klasztornych na cele świeckie. Kasata rozbiła struktury bernardynów w Królestwie Polskim. W wielu zakonnikach zagubiła sens prowadzenia życia zakonnego, co przejawiało się w częstych prośbach o sekularyzację oraz w emigracji. Była to cena, jaką bernardyni płacili za zaangażowanie patriotyczne i związanie swego życia z losami społeczeństwa polskiego.
According to historians, the participation of the Order of Friars Minor (Bernardines) in the January Uprising was significant. In the light of historical sources Bernardine Fathers wrote a beautiful page in this national surge. As the historian of Bernardine Order Hieronim Eugeniusz Wyczawski claimed, it should be seen as a noble surge being the expression of love for the homeland and freedom. On the other hand it is impossible not to arrive at the conclusion that actions undertaken by Bernardine Fathers were frequently reckless and gullible or they lacked the ability to organize conspiratorial work. In the present elaboration I presented the activity of Bernardine Fathers in Congress Poland and on lands directly incarnated to Russian Empire which underwent big nationalistic oppression and where the bloody January Uprising broke out in 22nd January 1863 in the Kingdom of Poland and in 1st February 1863 in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. At the time multiple restrictions of monastic life occurred, also for Bernardine provinces. Not only did occupying authorities declare reluctance to such form of life, but they gradually limited and liquidated monastic structures, single monasteries and whole provinces. The dissolutions of the monasteries were accompanied with looting of their properties, taking away archives and libraries, exploiting of church and monastic premises for secular purposes. The dissolution broke Bernardine structures in the Kingdom of Poland. Many monks lost the sense of leading a monastic life what was manifested by frequent requests about secularization and emigration. It was the price that Bernardine Fathers paid for their patriotic engagement and binding their lives with the history of Polish society.

The purpose of this paper is to present selected aspects of the relationship between the father’s absence and children's well-being. The article discusses the consequences of the father’s absence in the family, including the impoverishment of the family, children's evaluation of their fathers, the health of mothers and newborn infants, lawbreaking by grown-up children, teenage pregnancy, violence towards children, alcohol abuse, drugs, and school problems. It was found that fathers play an important role in children's lives and their absence has a negative impact on their well-being.

People who lives in our times do not treat the Antichrist seriously. They can’t because they watch more dangerous monsters in television and in news. But in the ancient times, when the Fathers of Church built a theological doc-trine, the Antichrist was treaten more seriously. In the first ages of Christianity, people were far from dismissive attitude towards this opponent of Christ, who is mentioned in Holy Bible. Questions that Christians have asked themselves over a thousand five hundred years ago are still valid today too, even if they are fed to the fore when it comes to the critical challenges facing the Catholic Church. The aim of the article is a presenttion some interpretation issues of antichrist, with particular emphasis on the Fathers of the Church, by discussing the state of reflection in later centuries.
