Opis:
The subject of the present work is optimization of the modern implant system Osteoplant, which was created and is still developed by Foundation of University of Medical Sciences in Poznań. Clinical observations point to the occurrence of both early and late complications in the case of all two-component implant systems. In many cases, these problems are caused by mechanical fractures of the implants themselves. The obtained results of the previous studies focused on necessary changes of the implant mechanical behavior, which helped to achieve the required long-term strength. However, modifications of the present dental implant system are not obvious. In this paper, an optimization of the Osteoplant dental implant system, with the use of FEA and genetic algorithms is discussed.

For the last several years the combinatorial-cyclic method of optimization has been validated and expanded to new areas of applications. Although coordinate measurement analysis still is the main area of applications, the method is becoming a useful and unique tool in design optimization, reverse engineering (parametric design included), and virtual engineering. The case study aerodynamics of airplane and turbine airfoils, and simulation of wind tunnels is very difficult and promising as well. To solve all problems arising in these areas, an extensive software within the integrated CAD/CAM /CAE system has been developed, written in GRIP (SIEMENS NX 3.8).

Pareto front
Opis:
In this paper new multicriteria design optimization methods are discussed. These methods are evolutionary algorithm based medhods, and their aim is to make the process of generating the Pareto front very effective. Firstly, the multistage evolutionary algorithm method is presented. In this method, in each stage only a bicriterion optimization problem is solved and then an objective function is transformed to the constrain function. The process is repeatedtill all the objective functions are considered. Secondly, the preference vector method is presented. In this method, an evolutionary algorithm finds the ideal vector. This vector provides the decision maker with the information about possible ranges of the objective functions. On the basis of this information the decision maker can establish the preference vector within which he expects to find a preferred solution. For this vector, a set of Pareto solutions is generated using an evolutionary algorithm based method. Finally, the method for selecting a representative subset of Pareto solutions is discussed. The idea of this method consists in reducing the set of Pareto optimal solutions using the indiscrenibility interval method after running a certain number of generations. To show how the methods discussed work each of them in turn is applied to solve a design optimization problem. These examples show clearly that using the proposed methods the computation time can be reduced significantly and that the generated solutions are still on the Pareto front.
W artykule przedstawiono nowe metody optymalizacji wielokryterialnej w projektowaniu technicznym.

Topics below are rather undesired, but important, outcome not yet completed research on the aircraft airfoils, turbine and compressor blades, parametric design of airfoils, establishing the relationships based on the results of experiments in a wind tunnel, developing databases for determining the relationships between airfoil parameters and lift and drag coefficients. Reliable database created as a result of the research work allows to simulate the wind tunnel. Very early on, however, was necessary to extend the developed specialized software for a new applications, and it meant the need for generalization of software, e.g. for gas turbine engines, propellers, etc. But after some time it turned out, that in order to achieve the required accuracy, the changes are needed in the underlying assumptions, set decades ago. In addition, coordinate measuring machines and systems, and associated software were not always as accurate as expected. Concepts how to solve it and develop software carrying out these tasks are presented in the article. It is like to withdraw from the old path and look for a new path that will lead to the reliable data base. Processes related to air or gas flow should be similarly defined in all the specialized software applications (e.g. aircrafts and turbine engines). Accuracy (10-9 mm) achieved in virtual measurements within the integrated system can be used to verify the results of CMM and other measuring systems, provided that an appropriate software has been developed.

The impeller of an existing industrial pump (with both geometry and performance known) was analyzed and redesigned using an integrated, design/analysis, turbomachinery geometry modeling and flow simulation system. The purpose of the redesign was to achieve improved impeller performance (at the duty point). Fluid dynamics and geometry modeling parts of the design/analysis system were systematically applied: a) to analyse the existing impeller (impeller A), which was designed using conventional (routine in industry) hydraulic layout procedures, and b) to develop a new impeller (impeller B), using a coupled, multilevel 1D-Q3D-3D for the design and optimization. This paper discusses the features and advantages of the integrated design system, in which the coupled CAD/CFD approach is fully implemented. The analysis results are presented for impellers A and B, with the latter demonstrating a predicted increased efficiency and smaller size. Comparisons of the CFD results for both impellers reveal internal flow features that explain the improved impeller B performance levels.

Opis:
The gas turbine engine has evolved rapidly during past decades to provide a reliable and efficient business solution for global transportation. The engine design process is clearly a large contributor to this evolution. This process is highly iterative, multidisciplinary and complex in nature. The success of an engine depends on a carefully balanced design that best exploits the interactions between numerous traditional engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics and structures as well as lifecycle analysis of cost, manufacturability, serviceability and supportability. To take into account all of these disciplines and optimization should be used. Currently most of present state-of-art numerical modelling methods, which are used mainly at detailed design stage, are unsuitable for this task due to very high computational time. The solution to this problem can be found in multidisciplinary design and optimization at preliminary design stage with use of simple 1-2D models. This paper presents current aero engine design process and indicates possibilities of future improvements by utilization of proposed methodology, which take into account aerodynamic, thermodynamic and structures (blade, fixing and disc) calculations, connected in one multidisciplinary model, which is suited for optimization. All disciplinary models are presented and described in this paper as well as connection between them, with study over design variable, goal function and constrains that should be used. Moreover, a strategy of optimization is proposed as well as methods for acceleration of optimization process by use of surrogate. The presentation of methodology is followed by example optimization of low-pressure aero engine turbine.

Three-cone bit is the key equipment in the exploration of the oil in offshore drilling and exploration, the bearing system and the seal system are the critical components for the bit. Especially in the offshore drilling environment, the seal design need to be carefully considered. A multi-objective optimization design including orthogonal design method and F-test with finite element analysis for a three-cone bit seal is proposed. Firstly, the calculation method of optimization targets are given, including the minimization of maximum contact pressure and leakage rate analyzed by ANSYS and MATLAB respectively, to maximize seal life and reliability. Then, an orthogonal experiment approach is used to investigate the effects of the eleven parameters on the seal performance, and the influence degrees of the seal factors on the optimization targets have been confirmed by F-test, and the reasonable factors can be determined by the trend of the targets. Finally, in order to validate the analysis results, a new seal was designed and tested on a seal tester compared to the previous seal. In this test, the seal maximum interface temperature that reflects the position of maximum contact pressure can be obtained by using three high precision thermocouples. Both the experiment results and the numerical analyses proved that the maximum contact pressure and leakage rate of the improved seal have been reduced compared to the previous.

Product reliability design optimization is affected by epistemic uncertainty greatly, which leaves significant risks in product use. In this paper, a new belief reliability-based design optimization (BRBDO) method under epistemic uncertainty is established to handle this problem. First, the belief reliability theory is introduced into the design optimization problem, and a quantile index is proposed to quantify belief reliability level based on uncertainty theory, through which a rapid analysis method called first order belief reliability analysis (FOBRA) method is developed. Then, according to the different trade-off strategies, two types of design optimization models are established, and corresponding FOBRA-based computation methods are also demonstrated. Finally, several case applications are studied to verify the effectiveness of the analysis and design optimization methods proposed in this paper. The results indicate that the BRODO method with the quantile index can save a lot of computational time with acceptable accuracy and can rationally cope with epistemic uncertainty.

The present study investigates eight design parameters such as seal coverage, core porosity, core volume ratio, core thickness, dimensionless core rotation rate, inner diameter of the core, air mass flow rate and exhaust mass flow rate to design and optimize a regenerator of a 20-MW power generation gas turbine with fixed pressure drop. The application of GA and Firefly algorithms to optimize the effectiveness of the regenerator is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithms. The effect of change in the seal coverage, core porosity, core volume ratio and dimensionless core rotation rate are evaluated as important design parameters having influence on the size and mass of the core of the regenerator. This could be done through fixing each of these parameters, while the other seven design parameters are selected as variables to optimize the effectiveness. The results show that the selection of all eight-design parameters proposed as operating variables is necessary to optimize the parameters to achieve the proper design of this regenerator.

The optimization of design of the intake pipe has a great impact on the overall performance of the engine. The design of the intake pipe based on experience is subjective and unilateral, and the design cycle and experimental period are long. Ansys Fluent software is used to simulate the design, which can more intuitively reflect the air flow condition of the intake pipe and enable selection of the best layout. First of all, a three-dimensional model of the intake pipe is simulated and the airflow characteristics are studied and analyzed. The streamline diagram and velocity contour under various conditions are obtained. Then, compared with the simulation results, the position of the intake pipe is optimized. Finally, the optimized intake pipe is simulated and verified. According to the experimental results, the intake performance of the optimized intake pipe is greatly improved.

The reduction of fuel cost has always been one of the key strategic business goals for ship owners and operators. In the current climate of high oil prices, the reduction of fuel costs becomes essential; and furthermore a variety of recent legislations require owners and operators to move towards the reduction of emissions from ships of SOx, NOx and CO. Hence the pressure on designers to achieve both reduced fuel costs and reduced emissions by optimising the hull and propeller has never been higher. In parallel to the performance improvement of new built vessels, there has been great interest in the potential to enhance the performance of existing vessels through retrofit of devices to the hull. In any case for instance the WED device must be customized to fit to the afterbody of the ship in terms of performing its supposed function. The Designer is therefore placed in the front of multiple geometric solutions from between he has to make a choice. This paper is intended to help the Designers to have a rational choosing approach by involving the numeric optimization of the geometry of the WED in order to select the best fitted WED to perform the best in order to achieve some predefined parameters. In this paperwork a given geometry of a WED device is taken and via Design Optimization the geometry of the duct was refined so that better results are achieved with a smaller and more compact WED. In doing so, the Designer is assisted by numeric optimization methods to choose from only three final candidates instead of several thousands in order to provide the best fitted WED geometry for a given ship afterbody.

The central composite design of the response surface methodology is applied to optimize ge- ometrical parameters of a multistage pump impeller in this paper, and a relevant experiment was conducted. The maximum head difference is 5.6%, and the maximum efficiency differ- ence is 0.73%, which can ensure the accuracy of the investigation. Meanwhile, 30 groups of test schemes are obtained based on the software Design Expert, and the numerical calcula- tion of each scheme is conducted. According to the calculation results and variance analysis, it is found that the effect of response variables of the primary terms blade number, impeller outlet diameter, blade outlet width, and the quadratic terms between the blade number and impeller outlet diameter, blade number and blade wrap angle, impeller outlet diameter and blade outlet width on the head are significant. However, the primary term blade wrap an- gle, the quadratic terms between the blade number and blade outlet width, impeller outlet diameter and blade wrap angle, blade wrap angle and blade outlet width have no significant effect on the head. Furthermore, a response surface regression model of the single-stage im- peller head of a multistage pump was established after removing insignificant factors, and the deviation of the response surface regression model is only 2.4%. The significant sequence of the influence of response variables on the head is the blade number, impeller diameter, blade outlet width, and blade wrap angle. Finally, the optimal geometrical parameters of the impeller are obtained: the number of blades is 6, the diameter of the impeller is 254 mm, the blade wrap angle is 119◦, the outlet width of the blade is 4.3 mm, and the predicted value of the head is 189.19 m. Therefore, the influence rule of impeller geometrical parameters on the head was obtained, which can provide theoretical references for the optimization design of the multistage pump impeller.
