An integrated business reporting is currently strongly connected with an important economic phenomenon of mutual interaction between entrepreneurships and their economic, social and environmental surrounding. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the importance of integrated business reporting for sustainable development of socially responsible business. The authors, using the deductive method, assisted by literature studies, are considering a vision of business reporting for modern society, dictated by the concept of social responsibility and sustainable development, which is associated with a constant desire to answer the question: how to improve modern financial reporting, to make it useful in the economy of the twenty-first century and consistent with the idea of sustainable development.

Współczesne komunikaty mają charakter multimodalny. Autorzy formułują następujący problem badawczy: rachunkowość jako rodzaj specyficznego języka o określonym kodzie powinna podążać drogą zmian jakie zachodzą w samym języku. Tym samym powinno nastąpić redefiniowanie sprawozdawczości finansowej do postaci wielopłaszczyznowych sprawozdań finansowych wzbogaconych formami wizualizacji danych finansowych i niefinansowych. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja i ocena zmian zachodzących we współczesnych sposobach i formach komunikowania się oraz możliwości i zakresu ich uwzględniania we współczesnej sprawozdawczości. W artykule zastosowano jako podstawową metodę badawczą analizę opisową, którą wsparto wnioskowaniem przez analogię oraz dedukcją. Treści zaprezentowane w artykule mogą stanowić podstawę dalszych, pogłębionych badań naukowych z tego zakresu.
Modern communications are multimodal. The authors formulate the following research problem: Accounting as a kind of specific language with a certain code should follow the path of changes that occur in the language itself and there should be a redefinition of financial reporting to multi-faceted financial statements enriched by forms of visualization of financial and non-financial data. For the purpose thus formulated, descriptive analysis was used as the basic research method, which was supported by inference by analogy and deduction. The content presented in the article may be the basis for further, in-depth research in this field.

Purpose: The article presents the results of qualitative research related to answering the question: “How can reporting be supported when there is no access to professional BI tools?”. Design/methodology/approach: The answer to this question was set in the context of the BI layers proposed by Todd (todd 2017). This approach allowed one to determine, in each layer, operations performed on data that support reporting. The main research method was the participation observation made in the author’s involvement in the project management team. Findings: Supporting reporting in project management when there is no access to professional BI tools needs strong technical competences and great creativity by the project management team in using applications such as spreadsheets or database tools. The most helpful functionalities provided by spreadsheets are text and search functions and the data conversion wizard. The most useful functionality provided by database tools was intelligent calculations made by queries and automatic report design provided by MS Access. Originality/value: The paper presents an examination of the set of operations and IT tools needed in a business analysis made in project management in a situation where there is no access to professional BI tools.

The phenomenon of business diversification, which takes place in many enterprises, is connected with the need to obtain information on the values generated by individual business segments. Information on operating segments included in financial statements is of interest to both external and internal users. The subject of interest in the article is the problem of the availability and transparency of financial information of listed companies. The aim of the research was to determine the scope of the disclosed information on operating segments in accordance with the guidelines of IFRS 8 Operating segments in listed companies belonging to the wood and paper industry. The research problem sets out the question about the extent to which the standard has been implemented in the financial statements of the surveyed entities. Conducting the analysis on the topic involved the use of the following research methods: literature studies and the document analysis method. The research has shown that the companies have implemented IFRS 8 operating segments, but this has not contributed to a larger spectrum of information relating to operating segments and improving their quality.
Zjawisko dywersyfikacji działalności, które zachodzi w wielu przedsiębiorstwach, wiąże się z potrzebą uzyskania informacji na temat wartości generowanych przez poszczególne segmenty działalności przedsiębiorstw. Informacje dotyczące segmentów zawarte w sprawozdaniach finansowych są przedmiotem zainteresowania zarówno użytkowników zewnętrznych, jak i wewnętrznych. W artykule ujęto problem dostępności i przejrzystości informacji o segmentach działalności spółek giełdowych. Celem badań było określenie zakresu ujawnianych informacji o segmentach działalności zgodnie z wytycznymi MSSF 8 Segmenty operacyjne przez spółki giełdowe należące do branży drzewno-papierniczej. Problem badawczy zamyka się w pytaniu, w jakim zakresie MSSF 8 został wdrożony w sprawozdaniach finansowych badanych spółek. W poszukiwaniach odpowiedzi na postawione pytanie posłużono się następującymi metodami badawczymi: studia literatury i metoda analizy dokumentów. Badania wykazały, że spółki wdrożyły wytyczne MSSF 8 Segmenty operacyjne, natomiast nie przyczyniło się to do osiągnięcia większego spectrum informacji odnoszących się do segmentów operacyjnych oraz podniesienia ich jakości.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to analyze the use of Business Intelligence systems in the process of the financial consolidation and reporting in enterprises. This study describes the approaches adopted by companies while preparing consolidated financial statements. The paper is based on critical analysis of academic papers and vendor-specific consultants. The findings reveal that a spreadsheet can be sufficient for a simple consolidation usage. However, a dedicated consolidation software should be implemented when the structure of the group is complex. The consolidation software can add value to the organization by improving efficiency and maximizing information use.
Celem artykułu jest analiza wykorzystania systemów Business Intelligence w konsolidacji finansowej i raportowaniu w przedsiębiorstwach. Artykuł opisuje podejścia stosowane przez spółki przy sporządzaniu skonsolidowanych sprawozdań finansowych. Opiera się na krytycznej analizie artykułów akademickich, opracowań, dokumentacji, a także instrukcji dostawców oprogramowania. Do prostej konsolidacji może być wystarczające użycie arkusza kalkulacyjnego. Gdy struktura grupy jest złożona, należy wdrożyć właściwe oprogramowanie konsolidacyjne. Oprogramowanie do konsolidacji może wnieść wartość dodaną przez poprawę wydajności i maksymalizację informacji.

The purpose of this article is to identify the way theoretical concepts of a business model are implemented into the reporting practice of a public company. On the basis of literature studies, the key components of the business model presented in corporate reporting, and the form and extent of disclosures in this field were identified. This article attempts to determine how the practice understands and explains the concept of a business model and whether the implementation of integrated reporting influenced the scope and form of presentation of information concerning business model in corporate reporting.
Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja sposobu implementacji koncepcji teoretycznych modelu biznesu do praktyki sprawozdawczej spółki publicznej. Na podstawie studiów literaturowych wskazano kluczowe komponenty modelu biznesu oraz ustalono formę i zakres ujawnień na jego temat w sprawozdawczości korporacyjnej. Podjęto próbę ustalenia, w jaki sposób praktyka rozumie i objaśnia koncepcję modelu biznesu oraz uzyskania odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy wdrożenie zintegrowanego raportowania wpłynęło na zakres i formę prezentacji informacji dotyczących modelu biznesu w sprawozdawczości korporacyjnej.

Celem artykułu jest ustalenie zakresu i formy informacji ujawnianych przez podmioty w ramach pojęcia model biznesowy na podstawie ujawnień informacji niefinansowych w raportach rocznych 14 spółek należących do indeksu WIG20. Badanie, któremu poddano 28 raportów rocznych za 2017 i 2018, polegało na przeanalizowaniu ujawnień informacji o modelu biznesowym oraz analizie zawartości raportów rocz-nych spółek i sprawdzeniu zakresu i treści ujawnianych informacji w segmencie raportu dotyczącym modelu biznesowego. Do jego przeprowadzenia wykorzystano metody analizy opisowej, analizy porów-nawczej oraz dedukcji. Wyszczególniono 22 rodzaje informacji niefinansowych systematycznie ujawniane, dotyczące modelu biznesowego. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że informacje o modelu biznesu ujawniane w raportach rocznych mogą być porównywalne między podmiotami oraz mogą i często już są porównywalne w czasie – w przypadku gdy ten sam podmiot raportuje dane informacje na prze-strzeni dwóch różnych lat. Ponadto stwierdzono, że w zbiorze raportowanych informacji o modelu bizne-sowym pojawiła się wyraźna część wspólna występująca u wszystkich przebadanych spółek, a którą były informacje o łańcuchu tworzenia wartości. Artykuł jest rezultatem oryginalnego badania empirycznego, jednego z pierwszych dotyczących analizy informacji niefinansowych ujawnianych obligatoryjnie przez polskie spółki po roku 2018, i uzupełnia lukę w badaniach naukowych nad obligatoryjnym ujawnianiem informacji o modelu biznesu w raportach rocznych.
The purpose of the article is to determine the scope and form of information currently disclosed by enti-ties under the concept of a "business model" based on the disclosure of non-financial information in the annual reports of fourteen WIG20 index companies. The study involved analysing disclosures about the business model, analysing the content of annual reports of companies, and checking the scope and con-tent of the disclosed information in the section of the report regarding the business model. In total, 28 annual reports for 2017 and 2018 were analysed. The survey included 22 types of non-financial infor-mation systematically disclosed under the definition of “business model”. The study used descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, and deduction methods. As a result of the research, it was found that information on the business model disclosed in annual reports can be comparable between entities and can be and often already are comparable over time – when the same entity reports the information over two different years. In addition, it was found that in the set of reported information about the business model, there was clearly a common part in all the surveyed companies, which was information on the value creation chain. The article is the result of an original empirical study and closes the gap in scientific research on the mandatory disclosure of information about the business model in annual reports. The survey is one of the first attempts to analyse non-financial information compulsorily disclosed by Polish companies after 2018.

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Visegrad Group countries (V4) is not very well developed yet, but is gradually transforming and becoming an important topic in the region. The study findings indicate that also CSR reporting practices are not widespread among companies in V4 countries. Initiatives undertaken by the governments of V4 countries basically are related with sharing of information and knowledge and the development of reporting guides. The paper presents an overview of the development of the concept of CSR in Visegrad 4 countries concentrating especially on disclosing the information on CSR performance in the region. The situation of CSR reporting practices in each of the V4 countries is outlined based on the conducted literature analysis.

The idea of sustainable development is reflected in nearly all economic sectors which, along with the global advancement of new technologies, are developing at a very quick pace. Sustainable development is not an obstacle to this continued progress, but rather a call to maintain reason and moderation in order to reconcile areas of key importance to the humanity, that is economic growth and balanced distribution of profits. Owing to the widespread reach of this idea and to its presence in the development strategies of organisations in the business and non-profit sector, sanctioning reporting within this field, similarly to reporting financial data, seems like the natural consequence. Although reporting non-financial data and publication of integrated reports is becoming an increasingly common practice, undertaken by a growing number of organisations, the scale of this phenomenon invites the conclusion that it is still in its early stages. Numerous organisations publish such reports on their own initiative, as they are aware of the tangible advantages brought by such conduct. Still, many do not do it, probably due to lack of knowledge regarding all the important interrelations between financial and non-financial results, as well as due to insufficiently developed legal regulations pertaining to this area. Both the European Union and highly developed countries see the need and the advantages stemming from the complex legal regulation of this sphere, which is manifested in concrete legal acts. Although Poland too has regulations pertaining to this issue, the still low percentage of entities which publish reports on sustainable development and integrated reports, inspires reflections. Owing to this, the authors have reviewed legal regulations binding in Poland, in the European Union and in some selected countries in Europe and worldwide, based on which they have attempted to formulate a few de lege ferenda postulates.
Rozwój idei zrównoważonego rozwoju jest obecnie szeroko propagowany nie tylko w biznesie, lecz także w sektorze non profit. Wraz z wbudowaniem tej idei w strategię rozwoju organizacji sprawozdawczość z tego zakresu wydaje się naturalną konsekwencją, podobnie jak przy raportowaniu danych finansowych. Potrzeba rozwijania sprawozdawczości na rzecz rozwoju zrównoważonego znajduje także swoje udokumentowanie w Agendzie 21. W dokumencie tym zaleca się opracowywanie zintegrowanych systemów rachunkowości środowiskowej (ekologicznej) i gospodarczej (IEEA), które winny stanowić uzupełnienie tradycyjnych zasad rachunkowości. Jedyną formą realizacji tej rekomendacji jest publikowanie przez organizacje raportów zintegrowanych. Wiele z nich upowszechnia takie raporty z własnej inicjatywy, mając świadomość wymiernych korzyści takich działań. Niemniej większość organizacji nie podejmuje tej aktywności, czego przyczyną jest prawdopodobnie brak wiedzy na temat wszystkich istotnych zależności między wynikami finansowymi a niefinansowymi oraz niedostatecznie rozwinięte ustawodawstwo w tym zakresie. Zarówno Unia Europejska, jak i kraje wysoko rozwinięte dostrzegają potrzebę i korzyści płynące z kompleksowego uregulowania prawnego tego obszaru. Stąd też Unia Europejska, a także Dania, Francja czy Brazylia dają temu wyraz w konkretnych aktach prawnych, których podstawowym celem jest zobligowanie do sporządzania raportów zintegrowanych dużych organizacji oraz spółek giełdowych, a także wdrożenie zewnętrznej weryfikacji spójności ujawnianych danych w formie audytów. W Polsce istnieją regulacje w tym zakresie, jednak ciągle niski odsetek podmiotów publikujących raporty zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz raporty zintegrowane skłania do refleksji. Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi przegląd regulacji prawnych obowiązujących w Polsce, w Unii Europejskiej, a także w wybranych krajach Europy i świata, na tle, których autorzy dokonali próby sformułowania uwag de lege ferenda.

Od 2011 r. międzynarodowe organizacje międzyrządowe formułują nowe regulacje i zalecenia w zakresie poszanowania praw człowieka przez podmioty prowadzące działalność gospodarczą. W nawiązaniu do nich powstają także regulacje krajowe oraz nowe standardy odpowiedzialnego biznesu. Od przedsiębiorstw oczekuje się dziś m.in. informowania o tym jakie stosują one podejście do poszanowania praw człowieka w swojej praktyce biznesowej. Pierwsze analizy raportów przedsiębiorstw z różnych krajów, pod kątem implementacji polityk dotyczących poszanowania praw człowieka, nie napawają jednak optymizmem. Założeniem tego artykułu jest dokonanie przeglądu najnowszych regulacji i standardów dotyczących poszanowania praw człowieka przez przedsiębiorstwa, a następnie skonfrontowanie tych oczekiwań z praktykami biznesowymi w celu wskazania potrzeby przeprowadzenia analizy poziomu świadomości praw człowieka wśród przedsiębiorstw.
Since 2011 international intergovernmental organizations formulate new regulations and recommendations in area of business and human rights. In reference to them, there are also coming national regulations and new standards of responsible business conduct. What among others is expected from enterprises today is informing, how they implement human rights in their business practices. The first analyzes of reports released by companies from different countries, in terms of their approach to respect human rights, do not fill us with optimism. The assumption of this article is to review the latest regulations and standards regarding respect for human rights by enterprises, and then to confront these expectations with business practices in order to indicate the need to analyze the level of human rights awareness in the activities of enterprises.

Opis:
Sprawozdanie finansowe powinno dostarczać użytecznych informacji, by wiarygodnie i jasno prezentować status finansowy przedsiębiorstwa. Przyjęte w ustawie o rachunkowości zróżnicowanie rozwiązań sprawozdawczych uniemożliwia porównywalność informacji, jakich dostarczają sprawozdania różnych jednostek. Jednostki sektora MMP mają ograniczone obowiązki w zakresie sprawozdawczości finansowej. Mogą składać jedynie uproszczony bilans oraz rachunek zysków i strat, w których informacje są mocno zagregowane. Niewystarczająca szczegółowość poszczególnych pozycji sprawozdania finansowego zmniejsza jego przydatność, a w konsekwencji użyteczność.
Financial statements should provide useful information and clearly present the financial status of the company. Adopted in The Accounting Act reporting diversity prevents the comparability of the information they provide. According to this act, Polish micro- and small enterprises have limited responsibilities for financial reporting. They may submit only a simplified balance sheet and profit and loss account, in which information is highly aggregated. Insufficient detail in the financial statements of micro- and small entities reduces its usefulness and, consequently, usability.

The article presents the results of five years of research on transparency levels regarding the disclosure non‑financial data by companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). The research was conducted as part of a project entitled “ESG analysis of companies in Poland”. The goal of the project is to provide credible knowledge about the quality of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) data on the Polish capital market. The article mainly contains the results of a comprehensive analysis of how well the listed companies reported ESG related data in 2016. The five years of analysis enable us to show a change in the level of non‑financial data disclosure between 2012 and 2016.1 The results of the research show that, from an investor’s perspective, there is still a huge information gap on the Polish capital market, especially in the reporting of environmental and social data.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to indicate the possible impact of the business mod-el on financial statements in the light of the Conceptual Framework for Financial Report-ing (CF) of 2018. Methodology/approach: The current state is presented (the basis were CF of 2018), and value judgments are formulated regarding the considerations contained in the article. Findings: The business model has a limited influence on the scope of information included in financial statements. Measurement (and the associated choice of accounting policies) and the presentation and disclosure of information are areas of financial reporting in which the business model may apply. Originality/value: The attempt to indicate that the business model – although not directly – has an impact on some of the principles set out in the thoroughly rebuilt and hitherto un-explored CF.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to present the results of research among Polish annual report users on their information needs regarding improving the financial and non-financial information in annual reports. Methodology/approach: The study was conducted using two research techniques. The first one is an online survey addressed to respondents of an external database; the second one is individual inter-views. The 694 responses were analyzed to find a relationship between the responses and the characteris-tics of the respondents, such as gender, age, or education. The survey was conducted among people se-lected randomly who had experience in professions such as tax advisor, accountant, chartered accountant, financial analyst, financial advisor, investor, controller, management accounting specialist, internal auditor, and manager. Findings: The data analysis showed the legitimacy of the actions taken to improve the ap-proach to both the scope and structure of annual reports in the context of their users’ needs. However, like any empirical study, the results of this study should be interpreted with caution. While the research is an attempt to fill the research gap in the area under study, it is also relevant to practice. Originality/value: The results can contribute to a better understanding of the needs of users of business information, and thus, the opportunity to meet them.
Cel: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań wśród polskich użytkowników raportów rocz-nych na temat potrzeb informacyjnych użytkowników informacji biznesowych w zakresie doskonalenia informacji finansowych i niefinansowych w raportach rocznych. Metodyka/podejście: Badanie zostało przeprowadzone przy użyciu dwóch technik badawczych: pierwsza to kwestionariusz online skierowany do respondentów zewnętrznej bazy danych; druga to wywiady indywidualne. 694 otrzymane odpowiedzi zostały przeanalizowane w celu znalezienia związku między odpowiedziami a cechami respondentów, ta-kimi jak płeć, wiek, wykształcenie. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone wśród wybranych losowo responden-tów z doświadczeniem w zawodach takich jak: doradca podatkowy, księgowy, dyplomowany księgowy, analityk finansowy, doradca finansowy, inwestor, kontroler, specjalista ds. rachunkowości zarządczej, au-dytor wewnętrzny, menedżer. Wyniki: Analiza materiału badawczego wykazała zasadność działania po-legającego na doskonaleniu podejścia zarówno do zakresu, jak i struktury rocznych raportów w kontekście potrzeb informacyjnych ich użytkowników. Jednak, jak każde badanie empiryczne, wyniki tego badania należy interpretować ostrożnie. Oryginalność/wartość: Badania prowadzone przez autorów są próbą wy-pełnienia luki badawczej w badanym obszarze, są one również istotne w praktyce. Ich wyniki mogą przy-czynić się do lepszego zrozumienia potrzeb użytkowników informacji biznesowych, a co za tym idzie, możliwości wychodzenia im naprzeciw.
