Opis:
The Republic of South Africa is a country which is extremely diversified regarding the prosperity and wealth of her citizens. This non-uniform distribution of goods and wealth is confirmed by the constantly increasing Gini coefficient, which is an index commonly used worldwide as a measure of inequality of income or wealth often called Coefficient of Social Unevenness. One specific problem which is characteristic for this country is the problem of the particularly disadvantageous situation of the black Africans living in South Africa whose average earnings constitute to be no more than just 13 per cent of the average wages received by a white person. However the primary aim of this article is to find and indicate these specific moments in art and culture when the phenomenon of poverty and social stratification which results from it finds its outcome in the artistic works of various artists. Some examples in the area of literature are the short stories written by Can Themba, especially „Kwashiorkor" or by Alex La Guma „A Walk in the Night" which are particularly meaningful. In his stories Can Themba described the frustrations of the university-educated urban black people; unavailable to realise their true potential because of the racial restrictions of apartheid and trying to balance their modern urban culture with the historical rural tribal one. On the other hand Alex La Guma's vivid style, distinctive dialogue, and realistic, sympathetic portrayal of oppressed groups have made him one of the most notable South African writers of the 20th century. A. La Guma was awarded the 1969 Lotus Prize for Literature for his works. In the fine arts the suggestive visions of poverty afflicting the black occupants of townships and Bantustans are present in great number in the black and white drawings, as well as brown sculptures created by the Khosa artist Mslaba „Dumile" Feni and Gerard Sekoto who is widely recognised as the pioneer the so-called „Black Art". David Mogano, Durant Sihlali, Welcome Koboka and James Salang are a group of artists who are all among the most interesting continuators of the watercolour tradition of creating colourful scenes from the ordinary life of townships. The political changes which occurred in South Africa in 1994 were expected to lead to the creation of the Rainbow Nation, that is a multi-coloured and multicultural society living in peace, harmony and prosperity. However many active artists in the last two decades, still remain very sensitive to various matters of social unevenness’s and poverty. Nowadays the major problem which is often raised by them in both literature as well as in fine arts is the ubiquitous threat connected with the untreated HIV and AIDS pandemia in South Africa.

Opis:
Australian art history includes a peculiar short period during which the European avant-garde values were brought to Australia by a group of Slav artists who gathered in Adelaide in 1950. They were brothers Voitre (1919–1999) and Dušan Marek (1926–1993) from Bohemia, Władysław (1918–1999) and Ludwik Dutkiewicz (1921–2008) from Poland, and Stanislaus (Stanislav, Stan) Rapotec (1911–1997) from Yugoslavia, later joined by Joseph Stanislaus Ostoja-Kotkowski (1922–1994) from Poland. Each of these artists went on to leave their individual mark on the overall Australian art practice. This brief moment of the artists’ working and exhibiting together also enriched their later individual work with the very idea of a common Slav cultural memory.

The authors present a summary of previous research projects in the field of professional situation of artists in Poland. They refer to the conducted research of the Labour Market of Artists and Creators in Poland as well as the expertise of “The Support for Artists and Creators. International Perspective”. They also present their vision of a support system for creators and artists, which comprises: the monitoring and analysis; the status of an artist; remuneration (government programmes and potential mechanisms to stimulate demand; taxes; copyright law); insurance; foreign promotion of artists; the organisation of the labour market of artists and adjusting education to its requirements. Finally, they refer to the presentation delivered at the conference “Creative Economy in Poland, Facts and Myths”, organised by the Creative Economy Research Center of SWPS University. The main postulate proposed by the authors is to create a platform for constant monitoring and analysis of the professional situation of artists in Poland, to which the project of estimating the number of artists, creators and performers should lead.

Opis:
This report aims to introduce an organisation called the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). Derived from the Sanctuary Movement, ICORN assists refugee artists around the world. The Sanctuary Movement was developed in the United States and Canada as a network of over 500 safe havens for Central American refugees. From the 2000s on, the movement focused more on moral injustices in the national immigration system and sought to confront global injustices on local levels. In turn, in the UK and Ireland the City of Sanctuary movement started in 2005 and turned into a network of over 60 towns and cities proud of being safe places for people seeking sanctuary and helping them to integrate in the local communities. Each ICORN city focuses on one writer/artist at a time and provides him/her with a safe place to stay and economic security for a standard term of two years. Currently, over 55 cities worldwide are part of the network (ICORN 2016).

Opis:
In Japan it is often the case that the process of mastering a profession, especially in the field of traditional arts and crafts, proceeds through a close relationship with one’s master (sensei), who embodies an abstract ideal of a certain art, as well as concrete methods and rules indispensable to perform that art as a profession and to attain success in one’s career. A ‘proper’ relationship with one’s master and a given artistic milieu, hard work, effort and sacrifice certainly pay off. Nevertheless, some Japanese artists, regardless of the linguistic and cultural gaps, take the risk of deciding to pursue their professional career outside Japan. Based on an informal, semi-structured individual interview with the artist Teshigawara Saburō, this paper will examine a professional career of the dancer, who claims to have walked his artistic way (dō) alone, (in)dependently of the so-called community of Japanese artists. Analysing a traditional path to artistic success, which partly derives from the ethical and philosophical teachings of Confucius, I will discuss an alternative to the above-mentioned tradition. Namely, I shall argue that it is possible to become an established Japanese artist outside of the system, working as an outsider, an immigrant or an ‘other’.

Art and the notion of beauty related thereto are both disciplines and states which are quite unobvious and thereby requiring us to ask the question: Why is it that human beings have in their minds an inherent need to witness the beauty along with - resultant - need to create and receive art? The author of the text - by devising some neurobiological tools - attempts to elicit relative laws of beauty reception, and simultaneously she utilises the instruments of neuroaesthetics, which is a field of science that investigates the impact of art on processes taking place in the human brain. She explores, among other things, mechanisms put to use, consciously or otherwise, by artists in order to make their works a peculiar stimulus. The author describes a series of “tricks” used by visual arts creators who model the particular ways the visual perception processes function.

The text aims to explore the economic and spatial strategies followed by artists who run micro-firms. The authors analyse results of a qualitative study of independent artist enterprises in Kraków. It reveals that motivations for artistic entrepreneurship are diverse and foremost linked with the need to overcome challenges artists experience in the labour market and in the market for cultural goods and services. Different strategies translate into particular location choices as well as varied visibility of such firms in urban space.

Using speeches, official websites, educational websites, and books from different historians, philosophers, political theorists, and sociologists, the knowledge foundation for this essay was laid. The question of the ways of bringing social consciousness in social democratic frameworks has been the central focus of the essay. Education and democracy, were the keys to the expansion of the intelligentsia and the free activity of artists and activists. In social democracies, the freedom of speech, the social welfares, and education all allow the rise of moderate intelligentsia, activists, and artists. The intelligentsia, artists, and activists in have been the ones to bring positive change not only in the cultural ground, but also in social, political, and/or economic grounds. The rise of these classes is of central significance in increasing public awareness.

The article focuses on the professional dancers in cultural institutions such as theaters. The problem was presented in outline and specifics of the work done by this group, as well as generally considered contemporary art market in Poland. The article focuses, among others, on management style, work-life balance, issues of social security and organizational culture. The publication includes individual interviews with full-time dancers of one of the Wroclaw theaters. The aim of this publication is primarily an attempt to describe the dancers’ profession and to identify the most important problems related to its execution. An additional objective of this article is to make an initial analysis of the literature. The reason which prompted the author to undertake such a purpose, is apparent paucity of studies in the existing literature. The concentration of the topics discussed relates generally to the creative industries, rarely strictly dance.

Since my PhD thesis analyses the evolution of the Philharmonic “Transilvania”of Cluj between 1955-1989, there will be a thorough statistic of the concerts which were held during that period in which the orchestra performed musical pieces of the composers mentioned in this essay. For some concerts, there will also be stated the date when the concert took place, as well as the conductor who was invited to Cluj. There will also be an analysis of a piano work of the Romanian composer Constantin Silvestri (Chants Nostalgiques op. 27 no. 1) which I personally played a few years ago. The study will contain a musical bibliography, as well as several footnotes stating the documents found in the archives of the Philharmonic of Cluj.

The objective of the paper is to examine the specific nature of factors determining the cre-ative behaviour of interpretive artists (interpreters). Referring to the premises of the concept of efficacious personality (Strzałecki, 2003), Campbell’s concept of self-efficacy structure (1996) and the concept of psycho-transgression by Józef Kozielecki (2007), the author of the paper verified whether the examined artists differed with respect to the profile of factors described in the Creative Behaviour Style model, level of consistency of the self-structure and two types of mo-tivation: hubristic and the feeling of self-efficacy. The author also examined the degree in which the consistency of the self-structure and the polymorphic motivation conditioned creative behaviour in the examined groups of artists. For the purpose of verifying the proposed hypotheses, a group of interpretors was studied: thirty-eight dancers (63.3%) and twenty-two musicians (36.7%) (N=60), employed in the renowned operatic theatres in Warsaw (the National Opera, the Chamber Opera) and in Kraków (the Kraków Opera). All the examined artists completed a Power Motivation Scale questionnaire (PMS) (Tokarz, Trzebińska, 2011), a Generalised Efficacy Scale questionnaire (Juczyński, 2000), Self-Concept Clarity Scale (SCC) (Campbell et al., 1996) and Behaviour Styles (Strzałecki, 2003). The obtained results partially confirmed the fact that dan-cers and musicians differ with respect to consistency of the self-structure and the profile of factors conditioning their creative behaviour.

The article presents the works of Polish female artists belonging to the curato- rial-artistic project FEMININE. It can be also called a kind of ongoing interven- tion. The first exhibition took place in 2011 in the gallery Wozownia in Toruńand has continued since then. The cycle functions uninterrupted, deeply em- bedded in the concrete ideas closely related to the feminist art and the female experience entangled in the body, biology and emotions, already reworked in the artistic, cultural and social context. All artists invited to take part in FEM- ININE project have been carefully chosen for several important reasons. First of all, the decision has been made due to the subjective, individual choice and the aesthetic, ethical preferences of the curator. Secondly, it is also important that these talented artists – for various reasons – do not belong to the main- stream of the contemporary art.The presentation of the exhibitions which follows has taken the form of short, personal impressions, created spontaneously after the first contact with the works. Hence, it is more of a notebook with important notations which can be treated as a first step towards deeper scientific analysis, yet to be done.
Prezentuję twórczynie należące do autorskiego projektu kuratorsko- artystycznego FEMININE75, który odbywa się od roku 2011 w Galerii Wozow-nia w Toruniu. Cztery wystawy miały miejsce w Galerii Dworzec Zachodni w Toruniu, w roku 2014 wystawy znowu powróciły do Galerii Wozownia. Pro-jekt ten to swego rodzaju nieprzerwanie trwająca interwencja. I właściwie ta charakte-rystyka stanowiła klamrę zamykającą moje poszukiwania.

Opis:
A sociological look at artists’ biographies makes one reflect on their increased mobility. Purposes and reasons of the artists’ migratory journeys are various, they have a different character and their effects also vary. The article based on the narratives of the Polish artists shows three variants of making decisions to emigrate from Poland following the imposition of the martial law in December of 1981. The purpose of the article is also an attempt to modify the dominant definitions of forced emigration by extending it to the aspect of internal coercion generating a strong push impulse. This internal factor seems to be very important in the cases analysed in the article. The biographical interview method allows to indicate that, apart from external coercion, various entanglements of circumstances and trajectories are revealed, which in some cases lead to the decision to leave the home country.

This article analyses the films, installations, performances and film projects of British artist, Tony Morgan, who is associated with Fluxus. Focusing on the years 1969–1971, we show the process of dematerialization and rematerialization inherent in his films – a distinctive feature of a cinematographic turning point in conceptual and postconceptual art. We discuss his film gallery, Produkt Cinema, an exceptional venue for producing and exhibiting films created exclusively for this specific location. We finally argue that, through the introduction of performative elements, his installations, generically entitled Structural Films, disrupt the minimalist ethos of ‘structural film’ (a term coined by P. Adams Sitney).
