Opis:
Increasingly, in vivo imaging of small laboratory animals has become critical for preclinical biomedical research allowing the non-invasive assessment of biological and biochemical processes in living subjects. Many different positron labeled compounds have been synthesized as tracer that target a range of specific markers or pathways yielding quantitative, spatially and temporally indexed information on normal and diseased tissues such as tumors. Because of its non-invasive nature, nuclear techniques also enable to repeat studies in a single subject, facilitating longitudinal assay designs of rodent models of human cancer, cardiovascular, neurological and other diseases over the entire process, from the inception to progression of the disease, and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment or other interventions (with each animal serving as its own control and thereby reducing biological variability). This also serves to reduce the number of experimental animals required for a particular study. In contrast to cell or tissue culture-based experiments, studies in intact animals incorporate all the interacting physiological factors present in vivo.

Opis:
FTIR imaging is a novel spectroscopic technique able to provide cell imaging, in vivo and in real-time. However, one key issue is developing methodologies for cell culture on IR-transparent substrates fitting cell biology requirements. In this work we tested different IR-transparent substrates in terms of biotoxicity, surface properties, and spectral image acquisition qualities. Only a few substrates, namely Si₃N₄, Ge, GLS, LaF₃, Si, SrF₂, ZnS/C, ZnS/F, were found to provide cell culture conditions comparable to those observed on usual polycarbonate Petri dishes, the main limiting parameter being the toxicity of the material (ZnS, GLS, PbF₂, PbCl₂) or a poor adhesiveness (notably diamond, AgCl, CaF₂, ZnS). From substrates eligible for a good-quality cell culture, the spectral acquisition quality is mainly affected by the refractive index value. Finally, the best compromise between cell culture quality and image spectral quality could be obtained using Si and Ge substrates. This rationalization of the available IR-transparent substrates for bioimaging is particularly relevant for live cell analyses, where cell culture conditions must remain unaffected by substrate properties.

Opis:
In this study, the electrochemical behavior and tribocorrosion performance of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys produced by different fabrication methods (casting and CAD/CAM milling technique) have been investigated in the laboratory-simulated artificial saliva. The results have shown that the maximum tribocorrosion resistance was obtained for milled Co-Cr alloy because of higher corrosion resistance and hardness of milled Co-Cr alloy compared too those of cast Co-Cr alloy. Moreover, the lowest friction coefficient was achieved for milled Co-Cr alloy.

Opis:
In this work, the electrophoretic deposition method has been developed for the fabrication of bioactive alginate coatings on the surface of Ti15Mo implant alloy. Thin ZnO film was deposited cataphoretically as the interlayer prior to anaphoretic deposition of alginate (Alg) which was performed from aqueous solution containing 1 g $dm^{- 3}$ of NaAlg at room temperature. The deposition voltage and time varied in the range 20-50 V and 30-120 min, respectively. The microstructure of Alg coatings was studied by scanning electron microscope, and the surface roughness was analysed using atomic force microscopy. Structure was studied by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Chemical composition and functional group were examined using energy dispersive spectrometry and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy methods, respectively. It was found that controlling the deposition conditions it is possible to obtain amorphous Alg coatings of variable thickness and porosity. Mechanism of electrophoretic deposition of bioactive Alg coatings on the Ti15Mo alloy surface was discussed.

Opis:
Subject of this study is surface modification of titanium with thin layers of carbon nanotubes, obtained via an electrophoretic deposition, as a means to improve metal's biocompatibility and provide a suitable matrix for very facile further modifications, if needed. Article presents a preliminary evaluation of the material, using goniometer, scanning electron microscopy and the Raman spectroscopy. The layer is found to be composed of randomly distributed, strongly adhered carbon nanotubes, introducing nanotopography to the surface of titanium. Biological studies were conducted with the human osteoblast-like cell line MG63. Biocompatibility of materials was evaluated using: (a) lactate dehydrogenase cytotoxicity test (LDH) and (b) γ -H2AX genotoxicity test (presence of DNA double strand breaks). Results confirmed non-toxic character of the tested materials. Moreover, carbon nanotubes layers enhanced the biocompatibility properties of titanium substrate - material with carbon nanotubes possessed lower cellular toxic properties even than pure titanium. The result of this preliminary study are very promising and may serve as a starting point for further studies, including further chemical or biological modification of the obtained materials.

Opis:
This paper presents a new method of optoelectronic determination of cow fertility, based on a microfluidic fiber-optic capillary sensor. The current state of the art of fiber-optic capillary sensors is discussed briefly along with aspects of instrumentation and applications. Unlike classical fiber-optic sensors which are based on changes in light propagation inside the fiber in response to external conditions, optical capillary sensors rely on changes of light transmission within capillaries filled with the liquid to be analyzed. This approach opens up interesting new possibilities for the application of capillary microfluidic sensors, while raising specific issues relating to their construction, materials and technology. The investigated sensor uses light switching forced by local heating in a capillary filled with bovine vaginal fluid. The dynamically recorded data were processed in an artificial neural network. We were able to observe changes in the cow's fertility cycle allowing us to identify when an individual cow was in the middle part of standing estrus which is most situated for insemination.
