Opis:
The high resolution spectroscopy of nanometric-thin alkali-vapor layers was made possible through the development of extremely thin cell. We have investigated the behavior of the extremely thin cell fluorescence spectra both experimentally and theoretically. Experiment is performed on the D$\text{}_{2}$ line of Cs-vapor-layer with thickness L=mλ, where m = 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25. For open optical transitions, the fluorescence spectra shows narrow dip on the top of the sub-Doppler-width fluorescence profile, at L≥λ. In case of closed transition, an extremely small feature in the fluorescence slightly shifted from its maximum is observed at L =(5/4)λ. The used theoretical model, based on the optical Bloch equations is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

Assuming that V(x) ≈ (1 - μ) G_1(x) + μ $L_1(x)$ is a very good approximation of the Voigt function, in this work we analytically find μ from mathematical properties of V(x). $G_1(x)$ and $L_1(x)$ represent a Gaussian and a Lorentzian function, respectively, with the same height and HWHM as V(x), the Voigt function, x being the distance from the function center. μ is obtained as a function of a, a being the ratio of the Lorentz width to the Gaussian width. We find that, the Voigt function calculated with the expression we have obtained for μ, deviates from the exact value less than 0.5% with respect to the peak value.

We find that the Voigt function calculated with the expression μ (a, x) we have obtained in this paper, deviates from the exact value less than μ(a) does, specially for high |x| values.

Opis:
Using an interferometric method, detailed analysis of the line shapes of the self-broadened 748.8 nm Ne line emitted from the glow discharge at low pressure of neon was performed in wide temperature range. Systematic departures from the ordinary Voigt profile were observed. We have shown that the dissociative recombination of molecular $Ne_2^{+}$ ions which gives rise to the non-thermalized neon atoms may be regarded as the main process responsible for the distortion of the profile of the investigated line.

Opis:
A strong laser field ( ≈ 10¹⁵ W/cm²) induced low-collisional-energy charge transfer process in Ne⁺-He system is explored. In the low collisional energy regime, the cross-section can be ≈ 10¯¹⁷ cm² which is about two orders of magnitude higher than the collision-only process. With increasing collisional energy the cross-section curve displays flattens and the charge capture tends to be practically independent of the laser detuning. In addition, we find that the capture probability in this Ne⁺-He system varies significantly with the laser polarization angle.

Opis:
A laser induced quadrupole-dipole collisional energy transfer system of Ca-Sr is proposed and the four-state quadrupole-dipole laser induced collisional energy transfer model is presented. The excitation spectrum calculated for the Ca-Sr system is characterized by a doublet structure and a width which is about twice wider than the dipole-dipole laser induced collisional energy transfer results. Calculating results show that the full width at half peak of the profile becomes larger and the quasi-static wing tends to be a broad flat as the field intensity increases, which are different from the reported results of dipole-dipole laser induced collisional energy transfer processes, dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole. A cross-section of $2.48 \times 10^{-14} cm^{2}$ at a laser field intensity of $5.21 \times 10^{7}$ V/m is obtained which indicates that the quadrupole-dipole process can be an effective way to transfer energy selectively.

We study phenomenon of electromagnetically induced absorption in the Hanle configuration by solving time-dependent optical Bloch equations for the case of the closed multilevel $F_g$=1 → $F_e$=2 transition. Our model gives optical Bloch equations as a non-homogeneous system of ordinary linear differential equations. For weak laser fields (Ω ≪ Γ i.e. Rabi frequency small compared to spontaneous emission rate), a perturbative method to solve linear differential equations can be applied. Perturbative method is realized by solving (in the time-domain) higher-order corrections to the density matrix which in the sum converge to the exact solution of optical Bloch equations. By its form, each successive correction is also system of ordinary linear differential equations which depends on the solution of previous ones. Corrections are partitioned such that odd give corrections to optical coherences, while even give corrections to populations and Zeeman coherences. We present numerical results for the behavior of density matrix elements with successive corrections, and compare them with exact solution of optical Bloch equations. Electromagnetically induced absorption is observed as a 4th and higher (even) correction to populations, when behavior in respect to both time and magnetic field is viewed. Since in our method each correction depends on the solution of previous ones, we can analyze how (through mechanism of transfer of coherences and transfer of populations between Zeeman sublevels) electromagnetically induced absorption is formed. We also discuss qualitative differences in the behavior (with respect to time) of certain density matrix elements for magnetic fields "inside" and "outside" electromagnetically induced absorption resonance.

Opis:
We present the first experimental observation of narrow dips in the fluorescence profiles of completely closed hyperfine transitions in Rb vapor at high atomic density, which is attributed to the depolarization of the excited state. Moreover, at low atomic density, a narrow peak on the top of the fluorescence profile is demonstrated, centered at the completely closed transition within the $D_{2}$ line of Cs. Experiments are performed in thin (700 μm) alkali cell by single light beam spectroscopy. The cell is filled with Cs containing a small portion of Rb.

Opis:
The high resolution spectroscopy of nanometric alkali-vapor layers has been made possible through the development of extremely thin cell. We present a detailed comparison of the fluorescence profiles amplitude and width, obtained in the extremely thin cell, both theoretically and experimentally. Experiments are performed on the D_{2} line of Cs-vapor layer with thickness L = mλ, where m = 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25. The enhancement rate of the transition profiles width is not growing monotonously, but it is larger for L varying in the interval from L = 0.75 λ to L = λ than that varying in the interval from L = λ to L = 1.25 λ. The used theoretical model, based on the optical Bloch equations is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

Opis:
We investigated effects of spatially separated laser fields on amplitudes and widths of electromagnetically induced transparency in M-type atomic system. We have shown narrowing of the electromagnetically induced transmission resonance and therefore enhancement of medium non-linearities that can be explained by diffusion-induced Ramsey narrowing. Depending on the polarization of two laser beams, narrow probe Hanle transmission resonance changes its sign in respect of the profile obtained when the pump laser beam is off.

Using the $\text{}^2S_{1//2}$ $F_g$=2→$\text{}^2P_{3//2}$ $F_e$=3 transition in $\text{}^{87}Rb$, we analyzed the interaction between the arbitrarily polarized laser light and Zeeman sublevels in the Hanle configuration. We studied theoretically and confirmed experimentally that the effect of the laser light polarization on the electromagnetically induced absorption strongly depends on the laser light power. For the same atomic transition, and for single laser light power (3 mW), it was recently shown that electromagnetically induced absorption line widths increase with polarization ellipticity and that electromagnetically induced absorption amplitude has maximum for certain laser light polarization different than linear. Here, we present results for amplitudes and widths of electromagnetically induced absorption for different laser light polarizations and for the laser light power≤ 200μW. It is verified that for small laser light power maximal electromagnetically induced absorption amplitude is for the linear polarization, whereas for larger power maximum of the electromagnetically induced absorption is at higher polarization ellipticity.

Opis:
Quantum close-coupled calculations of the collisional self-broadening of the 540.06 nm neon line (3s[3/2]$\text{}_{1}$-3p'[1/2]$\text{}_{0}$) are presented for temperatures from 70 K to 900 K. These calculations are based on the quantum-mechanical impact theory of Baranger and represent the interatomic interaction by adiabatic molecular potentials calculated using model potentials for the electron- atom and atomic core-core interactions. The calculated widths and shifts vary smoothly with temperature and are accurately given across the temperature range by fourth order polynomial fits.

Opis:
Half widths of 24 ArI lines from a wide interval of the spectrum and from a large range of excitation energies were measured. A wall-stabilized arc at atmospheric pressure was applied as a plasma generator. Electron densities of the plasma of the order of 10$\text{}^{16}$-10$\text{}^{17}$ cm$\text{}^{-3}$ were obtained on the basis of hydrogen H$\text{}_{β}$ line broadening measurements. The measured widths of ArI lines, normalized to au electron density of 10$\text{}^{16}$ cm$\text{}^{-3}$ were compared with experimental data for analogous transitions in other noble atoms.

We present a review of recent experimental and theoretical attempts to realize and investigate Bose-Einstein condensation in systems of cooled alkali atoms. We discuss a second quantized theory that describes quantum optics of such systems. We study in detail: (a) the weak field scattering off the condensate; and (b), the probing of the condensate with short laser pulses.
