Opis:
The author considers Pierre Bourdieu’s conceptual formula where [(habitus) (capital)] + field = practice and brings it to the field of international migration. She proves that a complete, cohesive application of Bourdieu’s theory in migration studies has much greater heuristic potential than the use of isolated individual concepts—it enables a new view of the social world where international migration constitutes an inherent part. It aims at explaining such phenomena as transnational habitus, forms of capital in migration process, migratory field, and transnational practices.

Opis:
This paper explores the transnational family life of Polish migrants in Norway, through the analysis of the nature and extent of transnational practices and transnational identifications. We draw on debates in migration studies on the limits of transnationalism and on transnational parenting, both arguing for greater attention to the actual extent and nature of transnational ties, as a way of securing the analytical value of the term ‘transnational’. The paper builds on interviews and focus groups with 45 research participants in Bergen and Oslo (post-accession migrants, but also earlier migrants, and descendants). It conceptualizes transnational family life as: 1) transnational parenting and care responsibilities; 2) return visits and communication; and 3) changing relationship dynamics. We argue that the extent of ‘transnational’ family life among Polish migrants in Norway in general should not be exaggerated. However, the analysis of migrants’ transnational practices and transnational identifications demonstrates first, a distinction between split households and migrant households, and second of all, how these transnational identifications and practices are, in many cases, mutually constitutive dimensions. We conclude that transnational identifications, and sporadic transnational practices, may appear as weak forms of transnational family life, but that these can also be understood as enduring forms of migrant transnationalism.

This article explores global bazaars run by migrants in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. Socialist and post-socialist mobilities have made a fundamental contribution to the establishment of new trading centres since the collapse of communism. Marketplaces change over time and are shaped by migration regimes, neo-liberalism and increasing cultural diversity. In bazaars we can study how diversity and economy mutually impact each other. I argue that post-socialist migrations have contributed to cultural diversity, thereby promoting the creation of new marketplaces, while everyday encounters in these localities result in conflict and/or solidarity among various groups. These processes are embedded in state regulations and are affected by the spatiality of bazaars in CEE urban surroundings. I conclude by focusing on religious diversity in the CEE bazaars, as cross-border religious practices not only help migrants to cope with social and economic hardships but also generate global interconnectedness.

“diffuse” family
Opis:
In 2015 the Romanian anthropologist Vintilă Mihăilescu wrote about the practice of migration in the case of the Romanian society, showing how it is ultimately deeply rooted, before 1989, in the communist period. Under the pressure of internal migration from villages to cities, the traditional Romanian family suffered a major structural transformation. According to the Romanian anthropologist, the diffuse family – household, as he calls it, seems to be “the grandmother” of the transnational family. The current practices of transnational families were formed based on these roots, of the “diffuse” family. Starting from the idea of Mihăilescu, the aim of this articleis to investigate the main (re)structures of the kinship practices in the Romanian society under the impact of external migration after 1989. One of the findings of the study shows that in the Romanian traditional society, preserving kinship cohesion meant a series of obligations and liabilities that were often transmitted from one generation to another without being questioned. They basically constituted and maintained the channel of communication between family members. The members of transnational families have absorbed these traditional structures, weaving over new formulas to adapt family practices(Morgan: 2011) to the specificity of transnational living, reformulating at the same time the traditional rules of kinship and adapting them to the new way of living. The study is based on materials derived from a qualitative research in five communities- three in Romania and two abroad.

Opis:
This article was motivated by the centenary (2018) of the seminal sociological monograph Polish Peasant in Europe and America by Thomas and Znaniecki (1918). It shows that classics can be not only occasionally referenced but also read in-depth with the new contemporary concept of social remittances embedded in transnational ties. Reaching for the Polish Peasant in Europe and America aimed this analysis to revisit the preceding passages of migration history and to revitalise the preliminary knowledge about human moves and social change. The article is a reminder and a positioner of Thomas and Znaniecki’s monograph in their contemporary migration historical writings of Central Europe, not commonly referenced in international sociology. The methodology of the qualitative content analysis with retrospective mapping the flow of information in the illustrative cases of migrant families applied in this article, helped to analyse resistance and changes of norms, values, practices and social capital affected by international migration and bundled as social remittances.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest omówienie funkcjonowania rodzin transnarodowych przez pryzmat perspektywy transnarodowości. To nowe ujęcie rodzin rozłączonych migracją zarobkową podkreśla znaczenie dwóch cech: przestrzennego rozdzielenia członków rodziny i poczucia wspólnoty. Mają one charakter procesualny, płynny i dostosowany do potrzeb członków rodziny. Są osadzone w codziennych rytuałach i  potwierdzają „rodzinność na odległość”. Zmianie ulegają także role rodzicielskie. Następuje ich redefinicja i reorganizacja. Nowe rodzicielstwo (distance parenting) zakłada kontynuację opieki nad dziećmi i budowanie bliskości emocjonalnej, mimo przestrzennego oddalenia.
The aim of the article is to discuss the functioning of transnational families through the perspective of the transnational perspective. This new approach to families separated by international migration underlines the importance of two features: the spatial separation of family members and a sense of community. Thus, the consequences of international  migration are not considered as a crisis, but as a new reality changing the quality of family life. The article discusses the new organization of family life in transnational families. It points out the importance of family practices for building family life. The family practices are processual, fluid and adapted to the needs of family members. They are embedded in daily rituals and confirm “familyhood even across  distance.” Parental roles are also changing. They are redefined and reorganized. New parenting (distance parenting) involves continuing to care for children and building emotional closeness, despite spatial distance.

Opis:
Today, international migration is one of the main factors that determine functioning of families. Transnational families and transnational parenting are becoming increasingly more common and have been gaining considerable interest of researchers and social practitioners. One perspective that may be useful for examining transnational families is the practice-based approach. The concepts put forward by Morgan and Finch (‘doing’ and ‘displaying’ family) help to analyse families not as structures, but as everyday practices which constitute them (Morgan) and which must be associated with a system of meanings to be displayed (Finch). In the article, the analysis of transnational family practices will focus on the ‘tools’ for displaying (Finch) that are characteristic of transnational family life, and it will be based on the results of Polish and international studies. The article will discuss the tools proposed by Finch, such as physical objects or the use of narratives, as well as the use of technology in communication and taking care of children, as these practices are specific to transnational families. Those ‘tools’ for displaying show that transnational families are flexible, they are constantly happening, and by being embedded in broader systems of meanings, they become acceptable.
