Opis:
Remote controlled laboratories had a great push during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, they were already out there but lacking in visibility. This external trigger pushed the academy to face a global challenge to start offering remote experiments more consistently and maturely. Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) has been offering several remote experiments since 2000 but with the need for an update due to technological aging. As such, the framework for remote experiments in education (FREE) was created based on new web technologies. In addition to the most diverse experiments that had already been developed, FREE includes two experiments that aimed at advanced-level physics students: the Langmuir probe and the electromagnetic (EM) cavity. Both allow users to configure the various parameters and to access the results in real time or check back later. All this access is done using a browser (on a PC or mobile phone) without the need to install additional software. The results of an experimental execution are stored in a database and are downloadable, allowing users to do various analyses and to determine the corresponding plasma density and temperature. In this paper, we will introduce how FREE was used in the implementation of both experiments and give an insight into their didactic approach, such as: (i) how to perform an experimental execution, (ii) the typical data set obtained with, and (iii) the corresponding analysis necessary for the user to retrieve information from it.

A matrix generalization of Kronecker's lemma is presented with assumptions that make it possible not only the unboundedness of the condition number considered by Anderson and Moore (1976) but also other sequences of real matrices, not necessarily monotone increasing, symmetric and nonnegative definite. A useful matrix decomposition and a well-known equivalent result about convergent series are used in this generalization.

Opis:
During the War of the Spanish Succession, Portugal joined the Grand Alliance in 1703. It made it involved, from that year on, in the conflict that included most of the major European Powers in a dispute for the Spanish throne, which, ultimately, represented a contest for dominance in Europe. Under these circumstances, several diplomats were in charge of representing Portugal at the main European courts, protecting its interests and communicating regularly with the court of Lisbon. This paper addresses an understudied set of the correspondence written in this period by Francisco de Sousa Pacheco, the Portuguese envoy to The Hague, to João de Almeida Portugal, Portuguese ambassador to the court of Archduke Charles of Habsburg, one of the pretenders to the Spanish throne, in Barcelona. The main objective of this article is to study the information network established in Europe, mainly in the Grand Alliance side, and the different routes letters followed from The Hague to Barcelona, either using the existing postal system or known intermediaries. Letters were not the only means diplomats had to convey information to their addressees. They also sent other sources of information, like periodicals, accounts of events and pieces of information gathered from different sources, including propaganda in its various forms. It also analyses the developments of the war, the structure and evolution of these letters and the struggle of these diplomats with the other states to make sure their commitments to send military and financial support to the troops were fulfilled. He also wrote about the espionage within the various courts, and the interception diplomatic letters suffered from the opposite side.Ultimately, we’ll see the efforts of these ambassadors as a means for Portugal to gain recognition within Europe, although it ended up with an increasing dependency on foreign states support.

Opis:
Most genotype differences connected with yield stability are due to genotype environment interaction. The presence and dimension of this interaction are the factors that determine the performance of genotypes in distinct environments. The environmental factors, like annual rainfall, temperature, diseases or soil fertility, can only explain part of this interaction. Many statistical tools have been developed with the aim to explain the information contained in the GE interaction data matrix. In our work we use the Joint Regression Analysis (JRA), the Zig-Zag Algorithm to estimate the regression coefficients and the multiple comparison tests of Scheffé, Tukey and Bonferroni. We point out not just the limitations of the JRA when used year by year, but also genotype selection advantage from general JRA over years. Data of the Portuguese Plant Breeding Board were used to carry the year and over years analyses of yielding stability of 22 different genotypes of oat (Avena sativa L.) at six different locations in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Interakcja genotypowo-środowiskowa jest jednym z głównych źródeł różnic w plonowaniu odmian. Istnienie i zakres interakcji determinuje przydatność odmian w różnych środowiskach.

We use asymptotic linearity to derive confidence intervals for large non-centrality parameters. These results enable us to measure relevance of effects and interactions in multifactors models when we get highly statistically significant the values of F tests statistics. We show how to use our approach by considering two sets of data as application examples.

Opis:
Our research is centred on the stochastic structure of matched open populations, subjected to periodical reclassifications. These populations are divided into sub-populations. In our application we considered two populations of customers of a bank: with and without account manager. Two or more of such population are matched when there is a 1-1 correspondence between their sub-populations and the elements of one of them can go to another, if and only if the same occurs with elements from the corresponding sub-populations of the other. So we have inputs and outputs of elements in the population and along with several sub-populations in which the elements can be placed. It is thus natural to use Markov chains to model these populations.
Besides this study connected with Markov chains we show how to carry out Analysis of Variance - like analysis of entries and departures to and from de populations of customers. Our purpose is to study the flows in and out of customers in classes for the two populations and to make research on the influence of the factors year, class and region. We used the Likelihood ratio tests for the hypotheses formulated on the basis of these factors. In our work we verified that major hypotheses were all rejected. This raises the question of what are the effects and interactions truly relevant. Looking for an answer to this problem, we present the first partition to a change in the log Likelihood. This partition is very similar to the analysis of variance for the crossing of the factors that allowed us to use algebraic established results, see Fonseca et al. (2003, 2006), for models with balanced cross.

Opis:
Macroeconomic factors impact both the stock markets and society. However, one generic research question remains unanswered: Do all macroeconomic factors impact all markets and all countries with the same strength? This study aims to contribute to the perception of how macroeconomic factors impact the Portuguese Stock Market. It also considers how the Portuguese Stock Market reacts to various factors compared to the North American and Japanese Stock Markets, focusing on the last decade. Using GARCH Models, the results document that the Portuguese Stock Market suffers significant impacts from the EUR-USD exchange rate. In turn, oil and gold prices also have a significant influence. The Japanese market, at first sight, looks more resilient to outside events, but it is also sensitive to gold price fluctuations and the EUR-JPY exchange rate. The North American market especially feels pressure from exchange rates from both the EUR and JPY and Brent.

Opis:
Background: The inclusion of gymnastic-based movements in workout routines in many exercise training programs, generally called mixed modality training (MMT), and even in many competitions, is increasingly common. In contrast to artistic gymnastic competitions, MMT workouts aim to complete as many movements as quickly as possible, which tends to deform the movement pattern proposed by artistic gymnastics. Execution of the MMT workouts with more of the gymnastics-based style (i.e., based on the gymnastics movement pattern) could improve performance in exercises with a high-level complexity, such as the “ring muscle up” (RMU). Thus, this study aimed to analyze the kinematic aspects of RMU, performed by a former gymnast both with and without the gymnastics based style. Methods: A former gymnast with a successful transition to MMT, carried out RMU using two movement patterns: 1) close to the classical artistic gymnastics pattern (“Front uprise”), and 2) close to that used by many athletes not from gymnastics. The athlete performed RMU, three times with each proposed movement pattern. Images were captured using a high-speed digital camera. Hip and ankle displacement, velocity and acceleration were recorded and analyzed. Results: The execution of RMU was faster and the hip vertical displacement was greater when RMU was carried out with a gymnastics-based style, while ankle displacement path, peak velocity and acceleration were lower. Conclusion: The use of a gymnastics-based style to carry out RMU seems to be advantageous from the biomechanical point of view, favoring the performance of RMU.
