Opis:
This article presents the study of the semiotic approach to the organization of both visible and invisible signs, by which the pedestrian is daily confronted in different environments of the city. Article starts with retrospective of the scientific studies of city‘s semiotic dimension beginning from Kevin Lynch and up to such contemporaries as Umberto Eco, Alexendros Lagopoulos and others. The article helps to consider the denotational and the connotational functions of urban semiotics. This text highlights the difference between the semiotic perception of the city by pedestrian and a person that uses some type of vehicle. Analysis of the change in treating the city’s semiotic domain in preindustrial, industrial and postindustrial periods helps to capture the negative aspects of this process. This provides us with possibility to detect the challenges and to define the preconditions for creation of the comfortable and rich pedestrian environment of the city.

Opis:
In the interwar period western and eastern parts of the modern-day Ukraine were included into two countries – the Second Polish Republic and the Soviet Union. The development of cities of modern-day Ukraine during 1920-30th took place according to various ideological and cultural models. Changes in “cultural models” and ideological guidelines, as well as the departure from forms of traditional society during that period can be viewed as associated but semantically inconsistent targets; those carried out in each region in different sociopolitical conditions and with different directions of socio-cultural transformations; those that can be seen most clearly in the spatial planning of the cities. Approaches to the planning of Western Ukrainian cities, based on the synthesis of historically formed traditional environment, identified urban environment as European integral element of globalization process and were interpreted as an idea, alternative to socialistic internationalism that was consistently implemented in the Soviet Ukraine at that time. The process of formation of national and collective identity was visualized by “blending” and modernization of architectural environment layers, entry or expulsion of architectural sites of different ages, which symbolized the socio-cultural changes, both were part of the interaction of social and cultural systems.

Opis:
Rainfall is one of the main components of the hydrologic cycle; thus, the availability of accurate rainfall data is fundamental for designing and operating water resources systems and infrastructure. This study aims to develop an empirical model of rainfall intensity (It,p) as a function of its probability (p) and duration (t). In 1999-2020, data on the hourly duration of rainfall were collected from automatic rainfall recorder (ARR) gauges. The empirical model has been developed using a statistical approach based on duration (t) and probability (p), and subsequently they have been validated with those obtained from ARR data. The resulting model demonstrates good performance compared with other empirical formulas (Sherman and Ishiguro) as indicated by the percent bias (PBIAS) values (2.35-3.17), ratio of the RMSE (root mean square error) between simulated and observed values to the standard deviation of the observations (RSR, 0.028-0.031), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE, 0.905-0.996), and index of agreement (d, 0.96-0.98) which classified in the rating of “very good” in model performance. The reliability of the estimated intensity based on the empirical model shows a tendency to decrease as duration (t) increases, and a good accuracy mainly for the rainfall intensity for shorter periods (1-, 2-, and 3-hours), whereas low accuracy for long rainfall periods. The study found that the empirical model exhibits a reliable estimate for rainfall intensity with small recurrence intervals (Tr) 2-, 5-, 10-, and a 20-year interval and for a shorter duration (t). Validation results confirm that the rainfall intensity model shows good performance; thus, it could be used as a reliable instrument to estimate rainfall intensity in the study area.
