Opis:
The sensitivity of nanothermites to electrostatic discharge (ESD) has been noted by many authors. In the present work, nanothermites have been prepared using aluminium fuels with oxide (O-Al), palmitic acid (L-Al) and Viton (V-Al) passivation and CuO, Fe2O3 and MoO3 oxidants, as well as binary oxidant mixtures. Fuel- and oxidant-based ESD sensitivity trends of O-Al ≈ L-Al >> V-Al and MoO3 >> CuO ≈ Fe2O3 were observed with binary oxidants affording intermediate sensitivities. In the majority of cases, with the exception of high proportions of MoO3 oxidant, nanothermites containing V-Al fuel were the least sensitive to ESD at > 0.156 J. Resistivity measurements have been made for the fuels and oxidants and follow the trends V-Al >> O-Al ≈ L-Al and MoO3 >> Fe2O3 > CuO. V-Al resistivity of ca. 1011 Ω·cm exceeds that of the oxidants studied. An ESD sensitivity trend, based on a reduced proportion of spark current carried by the aluminium fuel, is proposed and was consistent with the observed ESD and resistivity data.

Opis:
The thick and relatively complete Jurassic succession of eastern Greenland provides a unique biostratigraphic record for the North Atlantic region. The main biostratigraphic control for the succession has been provided by molluscs, especially ammonites and to a lesser extent by bivalves and belemnites. The late John Callomon and colleagues recognised 93 Boreal ammonite-bearing horizons in the Mid to Late Jurassic. This provides a reliable backbone to the biostratigraphy of these strata, prompting a palynological colleague to comment that they are the “Policemen of Jurassic Stratigraphy”. Other biostratigraphically significant microfossil and palynological groups, can be calibrated against this standard, but on their own cannot achieve the same precision. The Early Jurassic of eastern Greenland does not have such fine control as later parts of the period. No single biostratigraphic group can be used successfully throughout the interval, and there are only three significant ammonite faunas during this period. Reliance on various different organisms is necessary to cope with the changing range of marine to non-marine environments. CASP field-work from 1990 to 2012 has resulted in the collection of much biostratigraphic material. In this article, published data are summarised together with previously unpublished data in the form of a unified table. The integrated chart shows detailed columns for the whole eastern Greenland Jurassic. It demonstrates the ammonite, palynological and microfossil events/biozones and horizons which are correlated by time. More limited information is available on belemnites, bivalves and macroflora. This is the first time such an integrated biostratigraphic scheme has been assembled for the Jurassic of eastern Greenland. It will be of value to the offshore oil-industry in the northern North Atlantic and on the Barents Shelf as well as to field geologists in Greenland.

Opis:
The participation of young people in the research process can be empowering for the participants and valuable for the research outcomes. This paper presents the methods used and outcomes of involving youth in the development of priorities for the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study in Ireland. Two participative workshops were conducted with young people: the first focused on identifiying what is important for people to understand about young people’s lives; the second served to expand and prioritise the themes identified, for the purpose of developing questionnaire items. Following idea generation, discussion and voting four themes emerged as priorities. These were; ‘Diversity and Individuality’, ‘Independence’, ‘Mental Health’ and ‘Bullying’.The process enabled young people to prioritise dimensions of their lives that deserved further quantitative research attention. The findings of the study identify the potential of such a methodology to transform the path of any research project concerning young people.

Opis:
New theoretical and traditional quantitative solutions involving a pervasive unit quantum of ~10-20 J within biological and large-scale physical systems predicted that the mass of the human subject, subtle changes in gravitational phenomena, and the energy available within the cerebral volume should affect proximal random number variations produced by electron tunneling. In a series of experiments application of a specific, physiologically-patterned weak magnetic field over the right temporal lobe significantly enhanced the effects of intention upon deviations from random variations created by electron tunneling devices at a distance of 1 m. These variations were strongly (r ~0.80) correlated with the coupling between the forces from the background free oscillations of the earth and the energy differences across the cell width between lunar perigee and apogee. The results support the approach that complex cognitive processes including “intention” can be described by physicochemical parameters and their magnitude of energies are within the range by which interactions or modulations from subtle gravitational forces applied across the cellular membrane and width might occur.
