    The paper presents the concepts of model construction on transmission delays in systems with wireless interfaces using random series of function. It is a new method of modelling that allows us to use probabilistic description of time required to realise tasks in various devices. It also allows us to use time domain delta function series in order to describe the time of transmission of data between transmitter and receiver. In description of delays probability density function is applied. The model also takes into account existence of intermediary network devices that play a significant role in overall budget of delay.

    Opis:
    The article presents the concept of creating model of delays occurring in telecommunication system taking into account all sources of delays generated during data transmission between the source and destination nodes. Proposed model takes into account the existence of intermediary network devices that play a significant role in the general delay budget. The paper presents two measurement systems used to measure delays in 802.11 g based wireless networks and ones using ZigBee standard. Both systems were built based on the authors' concepts of hardware and software allowing measurement of delays by using additional connection for the synchronization of internal clocks. Described measurement systems selected amount of experiments was performed for varied network structures.

    W pracy przedstawiono wpływ sposobu modyfikacji powierzchni stopu Ti6Al7Nb na własności mechaniczne naniesionej powłoki biodegradowalnego polimeru poli(D,L-laktyd-ko-glikolid) (PLGA). Zakres badań obejmował: pomiary chropowatości oraz obserwacje makroskopowe powierzchni metalowego podłoża oraz obserwacje powierzchni powłoki polimerowej, badanie adhezji do podłoża oraz ultrananotwardości. Badania wykazały istotny wpływ sposobu modyfikowania powierzchni podłoża ze stopu Ti6Al7Nb na własności mechaniczne powłoki polimeru PLGA.
    The study describes results of research influence of methods for modifying the surface of the Ti6Al7Nb alloy on the mechanical properties of the applied coating of biodegradable polymer poli(lactid-co-glicolic acid) (PLGA). The research included: assessment of the macroscopic surface of samples in the initial state and after applied polymer coating, measurements of surface roughness of the metal substrate, scratch test and ultrananohardness test. Research has shown a significant impact of used method of modifying metal substrate on mechanical properties of the PLGA coating. The analysis also showed dependence of adhesion polymer coating on roughness of the metal substrate.

    The aim of the study was to determine the influence of PLGA bioresorbable polymer coating on corrosion resistance of metal biomaterial. Polymer coating deposited by immersion method was applied. Corrosion resistance of metal biomaterials (stainless steel, Ti6Al4V, Ti6Al7Nb) coated with PLGA polymer, after 90 days exposure to Ringer’s solution was tested. The amount of metal ions released to the solution was also investigated (inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method). The surface of the samples was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Degradation of PLGA was monitored with the use of the 1 H NMR spectroscopy and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). The studies were carried out for non-sterilized (NS) and sterilized (S) samples. Application of the polymer coating causes a reduction of release of metal ions to the solution. Depending on metal substrate different course of destruction of polymer layer was observed. After 90 days of incubation in Ringer’s solution polymer layer was highly degraded, however, the composition of copolymer (ratio of the comonomeric units in the chain) remained unchanged during the whole process, which suggests even degradation. The polymer layer reduced degradation kinetics of the metal substrate. Moreover, degradation process did not change surface morphology of metal substrate and did not disturb its integrity. The results obtained indicate that the applied polymer layer improves corrosion resistance of the alloys being investigated. Thus, the developed implants with bioresorbable coatings could be advantageous for medical applications.

    The study aim was to compare the antagonistic interaction between saprotrophic soil fungi and embryonic development of geohelminths Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum. The experimental cultures were fertilized eggs of T. canis and A. suum incubated together with mycelium of strains: Fusarium culmorum, Metarhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, Trichoderma viride and Trichothecium roseum. In the control cultures the eggs of both nematode species were incubated without fungi. The experiment was conducted at temp. 26ºC for 60 days. Compared with the control, all of the tested species of fungi significantly extended the embryonic development of both T. canis and A. suum. Most inhibitory effect on the rate of embryonic development of T. canis and A. suum had three fungal species: P. fumosoreus, M. anisopliae and T. viride. Compared with the control, on the 60th day of incubation in the presence of each of the tested fungal species, a larger percentage (p<0.05) of morphological abnormalities was stated in developing embryos of T. canis (49–69%) than in A. suum (15.1–67.7%). Among the examined fungal species, only incubation with P. fumosoroseus resulted in significantly greater (p<0.05) incidence of embryonic malformations (embryopathies) in T. canis, as compared with A. suum. Also the percentage of dead larvae of T. canis in the control and in cultures with fungi (12% and 100%, respectively) was significantly higher in comparison with A. suum (0.5% and 10.3–36%, respectively). The highest percentage of non-viable larvae of A. suum was found in the presence of P. fumosoroseus, and the lowest in the presence of M. anisopliae. Findings may indicate that T. canis eggs are more sensitive to antagonistic interaction of the examined fungal strains than A. suum eggs.

    Background: Determining the relationship between health behaviors and life satisfaction in patients who use health spas as an accurate measure of well-being (subjective well-being reflecting health condition) can be the basis for implementing preventive activities, setting trends for behavior modification, and monitoring changes in health-promoting practices. Aim of the study: To determine an empirical verification of the relationship between health behaviors and life satisfaction. Material and methods: The study included 123 women and men aged 32–80 years – all of whom were health spa patients. The Health Behavior Inventory (HBI) by Juczyński, and the Polish adaptation of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin were used to measure health behavior and life satisfaction, respectively. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between health behavior indicators and the level of life satisfaction in patients, as well as an increase in the practice of health behaviors with age. Gender appears to differentiate the frequency of the performance of health behaviors in the subjects. A higher overall rate of health behaviors was observed in females compared with males. For instance, females attached greater importance to healthy eating habits compared with males. However, a higher level of life satisfaction is associated with more intensified preventive behaviors in males. Conclusions: A health education program should take into account both the age and gender of health spa patients. It should also aim to not only develop health awareness, but also to include psychological factors, such as a sense of life satisfaction, which can strengthen patients’ beliefs in the importance of health-promoting activities.

    The ticks /xodes ricinus were collected during three growing seasons in forested areas of north-western Poland. The ticks were collected by flagging at 30 sites. The specimens collected (nymphs and adults) were subjected, after an appropiate treatment, to indirect immunofluorescence analysis (IFA). In addition, effects of temperature and atmospheric precipitation on the tick infection with the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi were investigated based on data supplied by the Institute of Meteorology. A total of 8519 individuals of /. ricinus were collected at the sampling sites within May-October of three consecutive years. The pool of individuals obtained consisted of 7356 nymphs, 559 females, and 604 males. The B. burgdorferi prevalence varied rather widely, from 10 to 19%. Compared to nymphs, adult individuals showed a higher infection rate. A relationship between infection rate and /. ricinus activity in different years and months was studied in detail. The boreliosis risk was found to increase with increasing tick activity. On the other hand, no correlation was found between the meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation), tick abundance, and the B. burgdorferi infection rate.
