Opis:
Experimental Mg-Al-RE type magnesium alloys for high-pressure die-casting are presented. Alloys based on the commercial AM50 magnesium alloy with 1, 3 and 5 mass % of rare earth elements were fabricated in a foundry and cast in cold chamber die-casting machines. The obtained experimental casts have good quality surfaces and microstructure consisting of an α(Mg)-phase, Al11RE3, Al10RE2Mn7 intermetallic compound and small amount of α+γ eutectic and Al2RE phases.

Opis:
The results of some mechanical properties of four Mg-5Al-xRE-0.4Mn (x=1–5) alloys are presented. The microstructure of experimental alloys consisted of an σ-Mg phase and an α+γ semi-divorced eutectic, Al11 RE3 phase and an Al10 RE2 Mn7 intermetallic compound. For gravity casting in metal mould alloys, Brinell hardness, impact strength, tensile and compression properties at ambient temperature were determined. The performed mechanical tests allowed the author to determine the proportional influence of the mass fraction of rare earth elements in the alloys on their tensile strength, yield strength, compression strength and Brinell hardness. The impact strength of the alloys slightly decreases with a rise in the rare earth elements mass fraction.

Opis:
Microstructural analysis of as-cast Mg-9Al-0.9Zn-xRE (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 5 wt.%) magnesium alloys is presented. Light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM+EDX) were used to characterized the obtained material. The results revealed that the as-cast AZ91 alloy consists of α – Mg matrix, binary eutectic α + γ (where γ is Mg17Al12). While rare earth elements were introduced to the Mg-Al-Zn alloy new Al11RE3 phase was formed. Additionally, in the experimental alloys instead of Al-Mn phase, ternary Al-Mn-RE compound was observed. What is more, the influence of RE addition on the area fraction of eutectic and needle-like phase was analysed. With increasing addition of RE, the amount of γ phase decreased, but the amount of Al11RE3 phase increased.

Magnesium alloy with 5 wt% Al, 0.35 wt% Mn and 5 wt% rare earth elements (RE) was prepared and gravity cast into a sand mould. Microstructure investigations were conducted. Analyses of the Mg-Al-RE alloy microstructure were carried out by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and the XRD technique. In the as-cast condition, the alloy was composed of α-Mg, Al11RE3 and Al10RE2Mn7 intermetallic phases. Additionally, due to non-equilibrium solidification conditions, an Al2RE intermetallic phase was revealed.

Opis:
The results of the Charpy impact test of AE-type magnesium alloys produced by the high pressure die casting method are presented. Three alloys with different weight fractions of rare earth elements (RE; e.g. 1, 3 and 5 wt%) and the same mass fraction of aluminium (5 wt%) were prepared. The casts were fabricated using a typical cold chamber high pressure die casting machine with a 3.8 MN locking force. Microstructural analyses were performed by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The impact strength (IS) was determined using a Charpy V hammer with an impact energy equal to 150 J. The microstructure of the experimental alloys consisted of an [alpha]-Mg solid solution and Al11RE3, Al10Ce2Mn7 and Al2RE intermetallic compounds. The obtained results show the significant influence of the rare earth elements to aluminium ratio on the impact strength of the investigated materials. Lower the RE/Al ratio in the chemical composition of the alloy results in a higher impact strength of the material.

Opis:
The results of microstructure investigations of an experimental magnesium matrix composite reinforced with Ti particles are presented. The experimental Mg-5Al-5RE magnesium alloy was used as the matrix alloy. The examined composite was reinforced with 30 wt% titanium spherical particles. The investigated material was obtained by the stir-casting method. The microstructure of the fabricated composite was characterized by a uniform arrangement of the Ti particles within the magnesium matrix. No new phases (created due to reaction between the matrix and Ti particles) were revealed by XRD techniques.

AZ91 magnesium alloy matrix composites with aluminosilicate glass cenospheres were fabricated successfully by the pressure infiltration method. Different parameters of the fabrication process, such as temperature of the mould and temperature of cenospheres were used. Influence of the temperature variation of particular parameters on the microstructure has been investigated. The microstructure of AZ91 magnesium alloy and fabricated composites have been investigated by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that AZ91 magnesium alloy consists of α-Mg matrix and eutectic α-Mg17Al12 and a small amount of discontinuous precipitates of γ phase. The microstructure of matrix AZ91 in fabricated composites is characterized also by the presence of α-Mg matrix and eutectic α-Mg17Al12. However, in the composite fabricated by using the mould heated to 500 °C more discontinuous precipitates of γ phase were observed.

The gas-tungsten arc (GTA) welding behaviors of a magnesium matrix composite reinforced with SiC particles were examined in terms of microstructure characteristics and process efficiencies. This study focused on the effects of the GTAW process parameters (like welding current in the range of 100/200 A) on the size of the fusion zone (FZ). The analyses revealed the strong influence of the GTA welding process on the width and depth of the fusion zone and also on the refinement of the microstructure in the fusion zone. Additionally, the results of dendrite arm size (DAS) measurements were presented.

The PMZ morphology of the eutectic regions changed from less to more divorced in the direction from the FZ to the base metal. The largest PMZ was obtained at a low welding speed (3.33 mm/s) and without additional water cooling of the samples.

The main characteristic of aluminosilicate glass cenospheres and their possible use as a component of magnesium matrix composites were presented. The results revealed that particular parts of cenospheres differ insignificantly from each other and it depends on which power plant cenospheres come from. The characteristic of cenospheres concerned their structure and phase composition and dimensions such as: wall thickness and size of pores occurring in walls, depending on cenospheres origin. Thickness of cenospheres walls and pore size were measured by using ImageJ computer software. The structure of aluminosilicate glass cenospheres and their phase composition have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The possibility of cenospheres utilization in the fabrication of magnesium matrix composites was presented on the example of AZ91 magnesium alloy composite with fly ash cenospheres. Composite was fabricated by pressure infiltration method.
