Opis:
Ours is a troubled, liquid and precarious world. Tsunamis of economic change, neo-liberal ideology and the cult of individualism have led to the rise of extreme nationalist, nativist and fascist organisations, where intolerance is shown to the other, the migrant, or asylum seeker. It is a time where dialogue across difference seems hard to achieve, while new social media often serve as echo chambers in which people only listen to others like themselves. Moreover, representative democracy is in crisis, while lifelong learning has been instrumentalised and commodified with its labour market focus. Popular or citizenship education has long been in decline. Drawing on the work of distinguished Polish sociologist Bauman, and of adult educators R.H. Tawney and Raymond Williams, alongside new psychosocial interpretations of the history and contemporary world of adult education, the case is made for a reinvigoration of the public realm, in which the marginalised spirit of a dialogical, popular adult education can claim a central role.
Nasz świat jest skomplikowany, płynny i niepewny. Tsunami zmian ekonomicznych, ideologia neoliberalna i kult indywidualizmu doprowadziły do powstania ekstremalnych organizacji nacjonalistycznych, natywistycznych i faszystowskich, gdzie nietolerancja jest okazywana obcym, migrantom lub osobom ubiegającym się o azyl. Jest to czas, w którym dialog między różniącymi się stronami wydaje się trudny do osiągnięcia, podczas gdy nowe media społecznościowe często służą jako komnaty echa, w których ludzie tylko słuchają opinii podobnych do własnych. Co więcej, demokracja przedstawicielska znajduje się w kryzysie, podczas gdy uczenie się przez całe życie jest instrumentalizowane i utowarowione z powodu nadmiernej koncentracji na potrzebach rynku pracy. Edukacja ludowa (popularna) lub obywatelska jest od dawna w odwrocie. Opierając się na pracach wybitnego polskiego socjologa i filozofa Zygmunta Baumana i andragogów R.H. Tawneya i Raymonda Williamsa, wraz z nowymi psychospołecznymi interpretacjami historii i współczesnego świata edukacji dorosłych, podjęto próbę ożywienia sfery publicznej, w której marginalizowany dotąd duch dialogicznej i powszechnej edukacji dorosłych może odgrywać centralną rolę.

This account examines how episodes are constructed and measured, and how Peirce’s Index informs and even hastens the advancement of this process—from binding spatial features, to the awareness of participant roles and temporal sequencing. It provides semiotic rationale for how episodes develop from static single pictures (dependent on verbatim memory) to events whose frames reflect a deictic and sequential character—superseding the consciousness inherent in autonoesis. Empirical evidence will trace children’s event memory—first iconic and static, and later characteristic of increasingly more complex interpretants which specify directional and logical relations, and memory sources. The signs which promote episodic thought are indexical in nature, given their largely relational character. They incorporate deictic projections of the self in diverse orientations, entering into different participant slots inherent to the event. Notice of the latter entails the influence of index to apprehend the spatial, participatory, and temporal directionality within and across event frames. This progression requires a rudimentary consciousness of aspectual features (telicity, dynamicity), as well as an appreciation for the events’ purposes/goals. Anticipating how, where, and when events conclude is critical to realizing the event’s purpose/goal, since, according to Bauer 2006: 384, it constitutes the basis upon which episodes are constructed.

In MS 620 (1909), C. S. Peirce crafts his ultimate statement regarding habit-formation. Here he defines and illustrates the influence of specific vivid virtual habits with the objective of changing future beliefs/actions. The specificity of the protoplans as determinations invites immediate implementation of action interventions, or recommendations to change action approaches. In this way, virtual habits transcend mere possibility for implementation of the action strategy; their vividity and specificity uniquely qualify them as soon to be actualized episodes.

This article exposits Maritain’s and Peirce’s account of the preconditions for emergence of event relations. It spotlights Maritain’s model of how to prepare for the receipt of objective intellection, as well as Peirce’s treatment of abductive inferencing. It further identifies the foundational representations (signs) which compel the intuitional/inferencing process. Both Peirce and Maritain advocate that inferring event relations depends upon two distinct kinds of knowledge: from empirical sources in Secondness/sensible experiences, as well as from an objective transcendental state in Firstness. In the latter, intuitions emerge from unbidden pictures vividly flashing across the mind’s eye, while in the former, embodied action templates trace lived experiential paths with objective import.

Traditionally, sociology has spent much more time exploring relationships between humans, than between humans and other animals. However, this relative neglect is starting to be addressed. For sociologists interested in human identity construction, animals are symbolically important in functioning as a highly complex and ambiguous “other”. Theoretical work analyses the blurring of the human-animal boundary as part of wider social shifts to postmodernity, whilst ethnographic research suggests that human and animal identities are not fixed but are constructed through interaction. After reviewing this literature, the second half of the paper concentrates on animals in science and shows how here too, animals (rodents and primates in particular) are symbolically ambiguous. In the laboratory, as in society, humans and animals have unstable identities. New genetic and computer technologies have attracted much sociological attention, and disagreements remain about the extent to which humananimal boundaries are fundamentally challenged. The value of sociologists’ own categories has also been challenged, by those who argue that social scientists still persist in ignoring the experiences of animals themselves. This opens up notoriously difficult questions about animal agency. The paper has two main aims: First, to draw links between debates about animals in society and animals in science; and second, to highlight the ways in which sociologists interested in animals may benefit from approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS).

This contribution explores how notions of Habsburg cultural identity were promoted at the main grammar school (kaiserlich-königliches I. Staatsgymnasium) in Czernowitz, capital of the multilingual and multiethnic crownland of Bukovina, between 1900 and 1913. After presenting the relevant historical and linguistic context, the school’s yearbooks from that era are examined to obtain information regarding the celebration of relevant holidays and events, musical and literary performances, as well as the commemoration of important cultural luminaries. Through this analysis, insights into the contemporary means utilised to promote a wider Habsburg identity will be gained, providing useful qualitative data and thus adding to the broader discussion on educational policies in late Habsburg Bukovina.
W artykule zbadano, w jaki sposób w latach 1900–1913 w głównym gimnazjum (kaiserlich-königliches I. Staatsgymnasium) w Czerniowcach, stolicy wielojęzycznego i wieloetnicznego regionu Bukowiny, promowano pojęcie habsburskiej tożsamości kulturowej. Po przedstawieniu odpowiedniego kontekstu historycznego i językowego przeanalizowano roczniki szkolne z epoki w celu uzyskania informacji na temat obchodów świąt i wydarzeń historycznych, przedstawień muzycznych i literackich, a także upamiętnienia ważnych luminarzy kultury. Dzięki tej analizie uzyskano wgląd w środki wykorzystywane do promowania szerszej tożsamości habsburskiej, dostarczając użytecznych danych jakościowych, które stanowią istotny wkład w szerszą dyskusję na temat polityki edukacyjnej w późnohabsburskiej Bukowinie.
