Opis:
The Fabian Society is socialist organization established in London in 1884. Five years later, the Fabians presented the publication Fabian Essays which contained the key assumptions of political doctrine, called fabianism. The key ideas of fabianism include a collectivist economy, municipalization, the socialist state and the idea of democracy. The Fabians agreed that changes should be gradual and peace, with respect for the law and the presentation of the importance of British tradition in shaping the national community. At the same time the Fabians rejected solutions that promote individualism and capitalism, revolutionary and utopian changes in the social and political system. However, the Fabian doctrine was not found particular interest in political and social life in Europe due to its local and pragmatic character.
Równocześnie fabianie odrzucili rozwiązania propagujące indywidualizm i ustrój kapitalistyczny, rewolucyjne i utopijne zmiany systemu społecznego i politycznego. Jednak doktryna nie znalazła szczególnego zainteresowania politycznego i społecznego w Europie ze względu na jej lokalny i pragmatyczny charakter.

Opis:
The article analyzes methods of implementing antitheatrical discourse in Ukrainian dramaturgy. Different types of antitheatricality in literary texts are distinguished on the basis of plays by M. Starytskyi, I. Karpenko-Karyi, A. Krushelnytskyi, V. Vynnychenko, Ya. Mamontiv, V. Cherednychenko, and M. Kulish. The authors define key vectors that the antitheatrical discourse follows: criticism of theater as an institution, criticism of the drama school / method, criticism of theatricality and acting, including in offstage situations. It is arguably reasonable to examine the phenomenon of antitheatrical prejudice in the context of the theory of metadrama as one of its factors. Artistic interpretation of the theater in an ironic or farcical vein, discussions over the repertoire that is no longer relevant, the aesthetic nature of stage technique, and discredit of acting as an occupation all generally encourage dramatic conventionality to double. Most common metadramatic devices used to implement antitheatricality in Ukrainian drama are believed to include a play within a play, adaptation of spectator’s reception for stage, and intertextual references.

Opis:
The paper seeks to make a review of the main standpoints and trends in the epistemology of the twentieth century. First, the problems of philosophical epistemology are discussed in the way as it is presented in the handbooks and monographs published in the 1980s and 1990s on philosophical epistemology. Then the three main currents of 20th-century epistemology have been distinguished: 1) the scientistic current in which the tasks of philosophical epistemology is to examine the grounds of scientific knowledge: here we find neo-Kantism and neopositivism; 2) the antiscientistic trend represented by phenomenology and neoscholasticism; 3) the philosophical trends which undermine a possibility for a purely rational relationship subject object by highlighting the non-rational factors which determine that relationship, e.g. social, historical, vital-psychological and other factors. Here we find the epistemology of Marxism and neo-Marxism, views on knowledge as regards hermeneutics, existentialists, personalists, the socalled philosophy of life. The analytic philosophy of knowledge after the Second World War and so-called naturalized theory of knowledge have been analyzed separately. The discussion takes into consideration, among other things, the following standpoints of: H. Cohen, E. Cassirer, E. Husserl, W. V. O. Quine, J. Habermas, J. Derrida, R. Rorty, L. Wittgenstein, and some main problems of contemporary epistemology: fundationalism, coherentionism, skepticism, internalism-externalism, issues concerning truth, realism and antirealism. Some broader epistemological consequences of the influential standpoints as regards the philosophy of science have been discussed here: K. Popper, T. S. Kuhn and P. K. Feyerabend. Finally, the author seeks to make a diagnosis concerning some possible directions of the development of epistemology in the twenty-first century.

The nature of the relation between city and countryside in medieval Italy was unique by comparison with the rest of Europe. Precisely for this reason, the question has drawn the attention of historiography, particularly starting in the early twentieth century, with the scholarship of Gaetano Salvemini and Gioacchino Volpe, and especially Romolo Caggese, the author of Classi e comuni rurali nel Medio Evo italiano (Rural classes and city communes in the Italian Middle Ages). This work long stood as a critical touchstone: it did so at least until the 1960s, when a new historiographical season set in – with monographs, essays, and conference proceedings – that gave us a much richer frame of understanding, while opening a larger debate on the question, which to this day remains a central concern of historiographical investigation.

Opis:
The article concerns the issue of experiencing spatial music. While discussing movement and space in music, Bohdan Pociej draws attention to two types of spatiality in a music work: the ‘internal’ and ‘external’ spatiality. The former derives from the nature of the sound material and the interaction of elements; it remains in the sphere of impressions and metaphors. The latter involves the physical parameters and actual performance of the piece. I demonstrate that the works of twentieth-century composers tend to break through from the internal space, transforming it into the external one. The issue of the body as a centre is present in the works of Edmund Husserl, Yi-Fu Tuan, Edward Hall, and others. The metaphor of movement in language and music has become the subject of research in cognitive science. In the context of spatial music, the metaphorical level coexists with the physical level. During the performance of a composition, listeners may enter into various relations with sound sources but always locate them with reference to their own bodies, which they treat as the centre. The two basic types of external spatiality – the perspective of the observer and the perspective of the participant – correspond to the two ways of understanding the metaphor of movement in music (internal spatiality) proposed by Steve Larson and Mark Johnson.

Opis:
Until the 1990s map perception research was one of the main parts of cartography as a scientific discipline. In the last years of the century map perception research fell out of favor as cartographers turned their attention to the new computer technology. In the first decade of the 21th century the problems of map perception became more frequent in cartographic journals. The article recaps the main problems, theories and research conducted in the twentieth century. The main concepts connected with map perception are discussed: use, utilization, reception and interpretation. These terms are used differently in different research orientations. The author assumes that the terms: reception, reading and perception are unambiguous and perception should be treated as a complex of active and highly interactive processes, leading to identification and understanding of the visible image. The relation of perception research with theory of cartography are presented in three stages of development of the research. In the first, intuitive stage, very important role played eminent cartographers Max Eckert and Karl Peucker, who appreciated the role of human perception in cartography. The second stage began with the research initiated by A.H. Robinson in the 1950s. In the stage perceptual research contributed to the physical aspects of cartographic signs and the psychophysical orientation emerged. Perception has been accepted as an element of cartographic communication theory, modeling theory and cartographic semiotics. The third stage of perceptual research emerged as a result of criticism of empirical research effects. Cartographers turned to methods and theories of cognitive psychology and cognitive orientation was a main paradigm of the research. Perception is perceived as one of the elements of the human cognitive system and considered in the context of higher lever cognitive processes, participating in cartographic information processing. Two methodological approaches can be set apart: theoretical and experimental. In the theoretical approach the processing succession is considered and some models of cartographic processing models were presented. The first decade of the 21st century opens a new stage of perceptual research. It can be named cognitive-digital as the research is based on computer software and is concentrated on cognitive aspects of map perception.

All significant methodologies of the XX century accept conventionalistic philosophy of science. The main question for such methodologies is: are there universal criteria, allowing to choose these conventions, which are the best from the cognitive point of view? There are four classical answers to this problem: anarchism, sociologism, elitism and demarcationism. In the article the main dillemas of demarcationist program are considered.

‘Transcendence’ has been a key subject of Western philosophy of religion and history of ideas. The meaning of transcendence, however, has changed over time. The article looks at some perspectives o ered by the nineteenth and the twentieth century Anglo‐American and con‐ tinental European philosophers of religion and presents their views in relation to the concept of transcendence formulated by the Bengali Hindu traditionalist Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati (1874–1937). The questions raised are what transcendence in the philosophy of religion is, how one can speak of it, and what its goal is. The paper points to parallels and di erences in epistemology, ontology and practice. One di erence is that the nineteenth and the twentieth century Western philosophy of religion tended to assume an ontological di erence between self and transcendence inherited om personalities such as Søren Kierkegaard, but also to explore the concept of transcendence beyond the idea of a metaphysical God. Bhaktisiddhanta, whose foundational thought mirrors medieval Hindu philosophy of religion and the theistic schools of Vedānta, suggests that transcendence has a metaphysical and personal dimension that is to some degree ontologically similar to and directly knowable by the self. Bhaktisid‐ dhanta’s approach to transcendence di ers om Kierkegaard’s and other Western philosophers’ and revolves around the idea of God as a transcendent person that can be directly known mor‐ phologically and ontologically through devotion. The article is a contribution to the history of ideas and the philosophy of religion in Eurasia and beyond.
