In recent years we have observed the global awareness of threats posed by unrestrained and irresponsible growth gaining ground. Hence, continuous searches for sustainable solutions which enable to put in place measures that promote global, national, and local efficiency seem to make sense. This paper aims to examine and assess the current state of affairs and proposes directions for the development of sustainable and socially responsible project-related activities. It explains how the idea of social responsibility emerged as a natural consequence of the evolution of an organisation with respect to sustainable development. Against the background of these notions we define the place and role of project management in socially responsible development and discuss different views on the subject presented by authors from different countries. Theoretical considerations are supplemented with the discussion of the findings of own surveys focused on the role and relevance of social responsibility in project management in organisations active in this field in Poland. It was an exploratory study, the first of its kind in Poland.

This chapter has been written to give the insight into project management. It can be useful both to future employees of private as well as public organizations. Modern organization can not properly function without project management scheme. Even smaller ambitious organizations employ project manager to better organize the whole process. The chapter could be treated as introduction to the course “Project management” as well as “Project management in European Union”. The latter one is part of curriculum of management studies taught at the faculty of management at Częstochowa University of Technology. The chapter gives definitions of “project” itself as well as “project management”, describe in details phases of project, considers various project methodologies, present some introductory remarks on European Union terminology of project management, gives the analysis of what does that mean that the project is successful and what are most often reasons for failure of the project. Then the example is given of a project from private sector.

Opis:
Competence frameworks are increasingly used in several practice fields and have been an object of research. A typical development trend has been encapsulation into a particular field, not considering the developments in related fields. Similarly, in research, learning from neighbouring disciplines has been rare. Yet, during the past decade, there have been several attempts at linking essentially related disciplines in practice, such as entrepreneurship and project management. This is a reaction to the trends in the labour market – a growing demand for people with diverse competences. In this context, converging different fields via competences deserves more attention. This paper compares the competences required for project managers and entrepreneurs; in addition, it explores the possibilities for mutual enrichment, contributing to further linking of project management and entrepreneurship conceptually. The cross-examination of competences for entrepreneurs (The Entrepreneurship Competence Framework or EntreComp) and for project managers (International Project Management Association's Individual Competence Baseline [IPMA-ICB]) reveals some quite significant, but also weak, correlations. The linguistic approach used has natural limitations, as different terms have been used to convey the same concepts. Thus, a relational linguistic analysis and conceptual analysis have also been applied. The main implication is the recommendation to integrate core project management competences into competence models for entrepreneurs. A natural progression of this work is to build a common competence model for entrepreneurs and project managers.

Opis:
High work efficiency is required by today’s organizations. Besides of other factors it depends on the right allocation of employed workers to their duties. Assigning employees to the right activities isn’t an easy task, because the job efficiency and differences in human nature have to be considered simultaneously. Usually, the decision undertaken by the human resource (HR) manager is based on his subjective experience. In several cases, such solution results in negative reactions of employees, and may lead to conflicts occurrence. In order to avoid them the problem of allocation of the properly selected team (taking into account workers’ personality) to the project’s activity is of crucial importance. Its right solution can decrease risk of activity execution delay. So, it is assumed the project’s completion time depends both on physical and psychological features of employed workers. Experimental results presented illustrate this approach.

Purpose: The article presents the results of qualitative research related to answering the question: “How can reporting be supported when there is no access to professional BI tools?”. Design/methodology/approach: The answer to this question was set in the context of the BI layers proposed by Todd (todd 2017). This approach allowed one to determine, in each layer, operations performed on data that support reporting. The main research method was the participation observation made in the author’s involvement in the project management team. Findings: Supporting reporting in project management when there is no access to professional BI tools needs strong technical competences and great creativity by the project management team in using applications such as spreadsheets or database tools. The most helpful functionalities provided by spreadsheets are text and search functions and the data conversion wizard. The most useful functionality provided by database tools was intelligent calculations made by queries and automatic report design provided by MS Access. Originality/value: The paper presents an examination of the set of operations and IT tools needed in a business analysis made in project management in a situation where there is no access to professional BI tools.

The specific nature of project management causes that the selection of the right people to join the project team has become crucial to the success of any project. The present study aims at showing the role of a well-chosen project team in the project management regardless of whether the project is run according to traditional or agile methodologies. Special attention has been paid to the decision making process in project team with the use of traditional and agile methodologies. In case of traditional, classical methodologies, more efficient are teams of highly qualified specialists, which are able to make decisions, more often individual ones, as quickly as possible and precisely. Given the fact that in agile methodologies there is greater decisiveness of the team, group decisions are made more often. Management’s confidence in project team is of vital importance in agile methodologies. In order to fulfill the aim of the study, traditional and agile methodologies for project management have been briefly characterized, the process of project team building and the results of scientific research pointing to significant role of the project team in project management have been presented. It has been stressed out that, regardless of the chosen methodology, while selecting project team members it is important to consider not only members’ knowledge or experience, but also relevant personality traits and interpersonal skills (social skills). However, it should be pointed out that given the specific nature of the agile methodologies, social skills of team members become incredibly important, and in many cases more important than professional competences.

Very often we complain about the decisions that were previously made. Yet the fact is that the decisions made were based on the knowledge we had before. By now we have gained more knowledge. Therefore the common problem of making decisions is that decisions are not made reliable enough because parameters in risk assessment and supply chain management are underestimated or not robust enough. In this paper we propose a framework that will try to predict future situations collectively and increase the reliability of decision making. Project management is the art of making right decision. Project managers are faced by huge array of choices. Decision analysis is used in strategic planning, operational management, and other areas of business. Decision analysis helps companies to determine optimal exploration and production strategies with uncertainties in cost, prices, and exploration prospects. This paper describes project management steps and the way they can be supported by Intelligent Decision Support system (IDSS). The main parameters assessed are total cost of the projects, time of the project total fulfilment, number of subcontractors, location factors, and etc. IDSS will enable to collect data, propose possible alternative decisions, and provide risk assessment.

Purpose: the aim of this article is to identify the place of social responsibility in the area of project management. The article is aims to determine the areas of interpenetration or mutual relations between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Project Management (PM). Design/methodology/approach: this paper reviewed different definitions of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), project and project management. The article is an attempt to systematise the relatively new concept of Project Social Responsibility (PSR), which requires combining the CSR concept with a project approach. Since each company, apart from its current activity, carries out or will carry out projects in the future, the aim of this article is to identify the place of social responsibility in the area of project management. The article is of an analytical nature. Findings: none of the mentioned definitions of project management or the project itself referred to the company's strategy, social, environmental or even stakeholder impact. Moreover, stakeholders are one of the main reasons for the implementation of projects. Originality/value: the comparison made between 'CSR' and the term 'portfolio management' already indicates a greater correlation between these concepts. It may therefore be assumed that the place of Corporate Social Responsibility is in the portfolio management and involves planning and implementation of current activities, programmes or projects relevant to the company's strategic objectives and taking into account their impact, as well as the impact of the company itself on CSR areas.
