Opis:
Comprehensive palynological studies of the Silurian rocks of the Pomeranian Caledonides are described, the first since Eisenack's (1972) work. 250 clastic rock samples were analysed, all from deep boreholes. Three of these boreholes (Lębork IG 1, Gdańsk IG 1 and Kościerzyna IG 1) are located NE of the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ) and contain horizontal successions of the western, marginal part of the East European Craton. Other boreholes studied (Bydgoszcz IG 1, Klosnowo IG 1 and Stobno 1) penetrated folded Lower Palaeozoic sediments, and lie SE of the TTZ. The investigations included a complete Silurian profile from the Llandovery to the Poidoli, which is documented in detail by graptolites. Associations of microflora (Acritarcha, Prasinophyceae, Sporites) and microfauna (Chitinozoa, Scolecodonta) varied in quality and quantity. There was considerable variability in the preservation and thermal maturity of the organic-walled microfossils. Detailed investigations of the acritarchs are described. 7 characteristic acritarch assemblages have been distinguished, and these are correlated with the graptolite biozones. Llandovery rocks contain assemblages with Domasia, Ammonidium and Tylotopalla genera. Wenlock deposits include Tylotopalla, Leptobrachion and Cymbosphaeridium. The Upper Ludlow deposits contain well preserved assemblages with Visbysphaera, Veryhachium, Onondagella and Leoniella, accompanied by Neoveryhachium carminae, Geron gracilis, and some Deflandrastrum and Visbysphaera species generally considered characteristic of Gondwana. Throughout the Silurian profile, individual specimens of typical Ordovician genera such as Acanthodiacrodium, Frankea, Striatotheca and Coryphidium occur. The acritarch assemblages overall show mixed characters, typical of both Baltica and Gondwana.

The paper concerns investigations of regional variability of the wave climate in the Pomeranian Bay. Analysis is based on the wave measurements taken during a period of four months and numerical wave model WAM4 results. The calculations covered period of 3 months in 1997 (Oct., Nov., Dec.) and two years: 1998,1999. Analysis of wave modelling results shows that wave fields are not homogeneous in the whole area. The gradual increase (up to 50%) of yearly mean values of selected wave parameters can be observed going from the south-westerly of the Bay to north-easterly direction. Directional distribution of significant wave height is determined by wind climate and shape of the basin and prevails in easterly, south-easterly, south-westerly directions.

Opis:
The results of a half-century investigations of the Pomerania-Rügen Caledonides are reviewed. Fifty years ago there were two rival hypotheses based exclusively on analyses of gravity and magnetic data. One of them assumed the presence of the so-called Circum-Fennosarmatian Caledonides, the second one claimed that the Precambrian craton of the eastern Europe extends far to the west reaching northern Germany and Pomerania. As time passed, more new facts from boreholes and seismic refraction and reflection studies accumulated. New hypotheses appeared, namely the concepts of an aulacogen and a major strike-slip fault, now merely of a historical importance. In spite of the new data the principal dilemma remains the same until present. Some investigators believe that the East European Craton (Baltica) extends far to the south-west reaching the Elbe-Odra Line, others assume the presence of the Caledonian deformations in Rügen and Pomerania which are regarded - according to modern concepts - as a manifestation of terrane tectonics. The latter group of hypotheses is supplemented by the author with the model of proximal terranes detached from the craton margin farther to the south-east and then re-accreted. The hypothesis is based on an analysis of differences in crustal structure in northern Germany and western Poland, and on the concept of a counter-clockwise rotation of Baltica during the Ordovician, proved by palaeomagnetic data.

Opis:
The article analyses the factors determining the development of the towns in the Pomeranian province in the years 1918–1939. The author maintained the typology of the towns from the period prior to WWI. The author also poses the question whether some of those towns changed the function they had played in the 19th century. The specific character of the development of Pomeranian towns in the period under discussion consisted in its new geopolitical and macroeconomic situation. After 1918 Western Pomerania became the frontier province. This situation determined the migration processes. The administrative authorities of the province indicated that it was also the reason for the economic stagnation. The author maintains that one may agree with the thesis about the migration processes being determined by the new political situation, but it should be rejected in reference to the economic development. The Pomeranian province after WWI found itself on the margin of Germany’s economic life, which concerned both average-sized towns and the capital of the province – Szczecin. After the power in Germany had been taken over by the NSDAP and the military preparations had started, only some Pomeranian towns got the impulse to develop. The area which mostly took advantage of the policy was the territory of the so called great Szczecin. The pace of the development of the remaining towns was slower than in the case of other German towns and cities. Some corrections should be introduced in the typology of Pomeranian towns for the discussed period. They concern mainly the weakening of the function of some ports such as Kołobrzeg and Greifswald. Some other towns started to play the role as communication centres important for the region – this group included Piła, which constituted a significant transport interchange of international importance, used mainly in the contacts with Poland. The deliberations included in the book indicate that economic changes in the towns of the Pomeranian province were very slow.

Opis:
Evolution of the Pomeranian Basin (NW Poland) dur ing the Devonian saw the development of a characteristic siliciclastic and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate marginal marine-to-open marine carbonate sedimentary succession. This was controlled via proximity of the land areas representing uplifted parts of the East European Craton (EEC): the Fennoscandian High extending in the north, and the Mazury–Belarus High, situated in the east. The depositional history of the Pomeranian Basin began not earlier than at the end of the Emsian or possibly in the Eifelian, after a long break spanning the Lochkovian, Pragian and much of the Emsian when the area was subjected to erosion. Sedimentation started in the north eastern part with marginal-marine clastic deposits with local evaporites which are dated as uppermost Emsian?–Eifelian, passing upwards into lower–middle Givetian marginal-marine siliciclastic and carbon ate de posits; these are followed by upper Givetian marginal-marine siliciclastic rocks. In the south western part of the area, the Devonian succession started with marginal-marine carbonates and siliciclastics which belong to the upper most Emsian?–Eifelian, followed by lower and middle Givetian carbonates, passing upwards into upper Givetian marginal-marine siliciclastics. During the Late Devonian the Pomeranian Basin underwent evolution from a marginal-marine in the earliest Frasnian, through carbonate ramp or platform/shelf basin settings during the rest of the Frasnian and early Famennian, up to a reappearance of shallow subtidal and marginal-marine environments in late Famennian time. At the end of the Famennian an open shelf environment became prevalent almost over the whole area and continued up to the Mid Tournaisian. The lateral relation ships of the lithofacies during the Givetian, Frasnian and Famennian are portrayed on 11 maps, showing relatively short time-intervals, selected to depict the most sigificant environmental changes. Radon Rn-222 is a commonly occurring natural radionuclide found in the environment from uranium- -radium radioactive series, which is the decay product of radium Ra-226. The presence of radon carries negative health effects. It is, in fact, classifi ed as a carcinogen, and therefore, it is necessary to continuously monitor its concentration. The aim of this study was to determine the level of radon-222 concentration in water intended for human consumption in the two voivodeships of Poland: West Pomeranian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian. Measurements were performed for more than 60 intakes. The level of radon was measured by using the liquid scintillation counting method. The range of measured radon concentration in the water from the West Pomeranian Voivodeship was from 0.90 to 11.41 Bq/dm3 with an average of 5.01 Bq/dm3, while that from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship was from 1.22 to 24.20 Bq/dm3 with an average of 4.67 Bq/dm3. Only in three water intakes, the concentration of radon-222 exceeded the value of 10 Bq/dm3. The obtained results allowed to conclude that population exposure associated with radon-222 in water is negligible and there is no need to take further action. In the case of three intakes where a higher concentration of radon was found, the potential exposure was low.

Opis:
Ordovician acritarch assemblages of the West Pomeranian Caledonides and their platformal foreland in the Peribaltic Syneclise immediately adjoining the T-T Zone were investigated. Material come from the Ordovician section of the Kościerzyna IG 1, Lębork IG 1 and Gdańsk IG 1 boreholes drilled in the marginal part of the East European Craton, though acritarchs were found only in two samples from the Gdańsk IG 1 borehole. In general, microflora was abundant and the investigations supported current ideas on the stratigraphical level of these rocks. The acritarch assemblages from the Gdańsk IG 1 borehole, found at a depth of 3214.8 m, contain species of Baltisphaeridium, characteristic of the Llanvirn and described by Górka from the eastern part of the Peribaltic Syneclise and the Podlasie Depression. The abundant microflora from West Pomerania contains index taxa of the uppermost Llanvirn (Llandeilo) and Caradoc. Numerous palynomorph associations from the Ordovician rocks of the Koszalin-Chojnice Zone can be divided into three local microfloral zones, using quantitative data, and these may be useful for local stratigraphical correlations. Acritarch assemblages on either side of the T-T Zone show many similarities and suggest that, in the late Llanvirn and Caradoc, there was little palaeogeographic separation between the sedimentary basins of Baltica and West Pomerania; at least, their palaeolatitudinal positions were similar. The thermal maturity of Ordovician organic matter (low and moderate) is also similar in both these areas. The highest heat flow values seem to be characteristic of the western part of the Peribaltic Syneclise, adjoining the T-T Zone. The degree of their thermal alterations in the West Pomeranian Caledonides is surprisingly low when the strong tectonic deformation and considerable depth of the Ordovician rocks are taken into account. The high morphological diversity of the acritarch assemblages, the presence of Baltisphaeridium and Ordovicidium, and especially of abundant Veryhachium, suggest that microflora from the Koszalin-Chojnice Zone represents an open-marine depositional palaeoenvironment, distant from the coast.

Opis:
The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship constitutes one of the smallest of the Polish voivodeships. It is composed of nineteen land districts and four city counties, including Bydgoszcz, Torun, Wloclawek and Grudziadz. According to the data provided by the Public Electoral Commission (PKW), in 2009 the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship was inhabited by more than 2 million people, 1.65 million of whom had the right to vote. Despite the relatively small number of inhabitants, due to provisions of the act regulating the process of voting for the Members of the European Parliament, the voivodeship in question became a separate electoral district with the electoral commission located in Bydgoszcz. This decision was infl uenced mostly by members of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) representing this region in the Polish Parliament. This lobbing activity seemed benefi cial from the party’s perspective, since SLD has been gaining extraordinary support in the region. But for this lobbing, the voivodeship under consideration would have been included in one district together with the Pomeranian Voivodeship, where the majority of voters are prone to give their support to the right-wing and centre-wing parties.

The European Commission put a growing emphasis on the territorial and integrated approach to policy support addressed in the frame of regional policy. In a special way this process refers to cities along with their functional environment. In Poland the National Spatial Development Concept 2030 has introduced the concept of functional areas, among others – Functional Urban Areas (FUAs). There is also a new tool – Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) – for FUAs in the EU programming perspective of 2014-2020. The scope of the article includes FUAs of regional and sub-regional centers in Pomeranian Voivodeship. The objectives of this paper are: to identify the diversity of projects planned for FUAs; to identify factors that integrate the projects mentioned above. The following main methods have been applied: analysis of documents; typology of projects proposed for implementation concerning their subject and integrating factors. Territorial agreements basing on regional operational program were a formula of development planning in the researched FUAs, more liberal than the formula of ITI. In 95% projects integrating factors can be identified (as hypothesis) and classified. The projects relate to many fields, the most to energy efficiency, health and transport.
