Opis:
Height-diameter models define the general relationship between the tree height and diameter at each growth stage of the forest stand. This paper presents generalized height-diameter models for mixed-species forest stands consisting of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), Silver fir (Abies alba L.), and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) from Slovakia. The models were derived using two growth functions from the exponential family: the two-parameter Michailoff and three-parameter Korf functions. Generalized height-diameter functions must normally be constrained to pass through the mean stand diameter and height, and then the final growth model has only one or two parameters to be estimated. These “free” parameters are then expressed over the quadratic mean diameter, height and stand age and the final mathematical form of the model is obtained. The study material included 50 long-term experimental plots located in the Western Carpathians. The plots were established 40–50 years ago and have been repeatedly measured at 5 to 10-year intervals. The dataset includes 7,950 height measurements of spruce, 21,661 of fir and 5,794 of beech. As many as 9 regression models were derived for each species. Although the “goodness of fit” of all models showed that they were generally well suited for the data, the best results were obtained for silver fir. The coefficient of determination ranged from 0.946 to 0.948, RMSE (m) was in the interval 1.94–1.97 and the bias (m) was –0.031 to 0.063. Although slightly imprecise parameter estimation was established for spruce, the estimations of the regression parameters obtained for beech were quite less precise. The coefficient of determination for beech was 0.854–0.860, RMSE (m) 2.67–2.72, and the bias (m) ranged from –0.144 to –0.056. The majority of models using Korf’s formula produced slightly better estimations than Michailoff’s, and it proved immaterial which estimated parameter was fixed and which parameters were free.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to characterise the aboveground litterfall in a 110−year−old beech stand with admixture of pine and spruce based on a 3−year measurement series. The studies were conducted in 2007−2009 in the Leśny Dwór Forest District (NW Poland). The input of litterfall during the study period amounted from 3.234 to 4.871 t/ha/year. Beech, pine and spruce contributed in the total litterfall mass in 50.8−70.1%, 11.4−11.9% and 1.6−24.0% respectively. Beech leaves were the main component of litterfall, accounting for 39.6−52.4%. In the masting year for beech (2009), seed coats and beech seeds had also a significant share in the mass of litterfall. The bark beetle outbreak, which occurred during the study period, influenced the dynamics and properties of spruce needle fall. In the outbreak year (2008), a several fold increase in the mass of needle fall, mainly green needles, from spruce trees was observed. The beech leaf fall compared with other components of the stand was rich in phosphorus, potassium and calcium, and moderately rich in nitrogen, had the lowest C:N and C:P ratios and the highest pH value. The needle fall of pine and spruce was much less rich in nutrients and strongly acidic. It also showed a broad range of C:N and C:P values.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of selection cutting management on the stem quality of the trees remaining in the forest. For this purpose, three parcels managed for three decades by selection cutting were selected as managed stands (MP), and two protected parcels without tree felling as control stands (PP). First, the frequency of deformed stems in each parcel was determined for a circular 1000 m2 area of each plot by systematic sampling of 100 m × 100 m grid sections, and then a stem deformity index was estimated for each of the deformed stems. The results showed that the frequency of stem deformity in MP (6.5%) was significantly lower than in PP (20.7%) (p < 0.01). In addition, the frequency of all types of stem deformities in MP was significantly lower than in PP. Furthermore, selection cutting management reduced the indices of twisting, decay, conicity, forking, and ellipticity by 58.4%, 53.9%, 34.7%, 8.4% and 6.8%, respectively. The results for the correlation between frequency of stem deformity and tree diameter at breast height (dbh) showed that the curves followed a parabolic shape in both MP (r = 0.83) and PP (r = 0.80), where the frequency of deformed stems decreased with increasing dbh (up to 75 cm in MP, and up to 65 cm in PP), and then increased with larger dbh. Selection cutting management, regardless of tree species, improved the stem form. Decay accounted for a high proportion (24.1%) of the total deformity in MP, mainly due to logging damage. Overall, the results of this study show that selective management has been successful in improving the quality of tree boles in the studied mixed beech stands. Regular and long-term stand monitoring and statistical quality control (SQC) may be a good approach to aligning ecological and economic goals in forest management.

Opis:
Mixed lowland forests reserved for natural succession are sparse in the Czech Republic. However, their development provides essential insights into the natural processes of these forests and recommendations for forest management in a changing climate. The research describes the dynamics, productivity, structure, diversity, dead wood, and radial growth of hornbeam-oak groves and calcareous beech-dominated forests in the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve (Czechia) based on inventory in 2002, 2008, 2014 and 2020. The objective was to evaluate changes in differently managed stands (high forest, coppice with standards, and coppice) after leaving the stands to spontaneous development in 2004. The tree density increased by 2–10% from 2002 to 2014 and decreased by 6–18% in 2020. In the high forest, an increase in the stand volume was observed during the whole period, while in the coppice with standards and coppice, only until 2014. The stand volume ranged from 190 (coppice) to 630 (high forest) m³ ha−1 in 2020 and increased by an average of 28% over 18 years. Overall diversity of tree layer showed an uneven structure in the high forest and a substantially diverse structure in the other variants. The deadwood volume has been steadily increasing (18–35 m³ ha−1 in 2020), accumulating an average of 1 m³ ha−1 yr−1. A lack of precipitation and high temperatures from June to August were the main limiting factors of the radial growth of tree species, while the number of negative pointer years has increased in the last decade. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) was the most sensitive tree species to climate compared to the resilient European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.). The lowest fluctuations in the diameter increment were recorded in Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) and the highest in beech in the temperature cycles of 7–15 years. Over the last 20 years, sessile oak [Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.] showed an increase in radial growth by 7%, while other tree species reported a decrease with a maximum in beech (by −38%). The forest stands managed as high forest, characterized by a higher production potential and lower diversity, had slower dynamics when compared to coppice with standards and coppice.

The aim of this study was to compare the structure of newly found remnant of natural beech forest in Suchy Żleb in the Tatra mountains with the structure of natural tree stands in other parts of the Carpathians. In the sample plot of the size of 1 ha the stand basal area amounted to 36.7 m2; of that, 42.7% was beech, 37.4% silver fir, 19.8% Norway spruce, and 0.1% sycamore maple. In the units of volume silver fir was the most important tree in the stand (47%), while the share of beech was only 33%; the total wood volume of live trees was equal to 446.8 m3/ha. Tree number was equal to 442, among them 327 beeches, 73 silver firs and 41 Norway spruces. Number of snags was 26, and their volume 26.16 m3. Total amount of coarse woody debris was 159 m3 per hectare. Sub−canopy layer was dominated by beech, the middle layer of tree stand was a mixture of all three species, and the highest canopy layer consisted only of spruce and fir. The analyzed stand had biomass accumulation slightly below the average for the natural mixed beech forests of the Carpathians, probably because of selective tree cutting in the past. Because Suchy Żleb is the only remnant of natural stand in the montane zone of the Tatra mountains, it is very valuable as an object for comparisons with natural beech stands growing in other ranges of the Carpathians.

The aim of our study was to quantify the differences in the regeneration-degeneration processes in pine and mixed oak-pine forest habitats in the Kampinos Forest (central Poland). We investigated whether the regeneration rate depends on habitat type, whether there is a relationship between the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) cover and the degree of community deformation, and which habitat type has been most invaded by alien plant species. Our results indicate that the constant loss of pine forest habitats, which has been observed since the 1970s, is continuing. The less deformed communities generally have more bilberry coverage, the stands in pine forest habitats are older and less deformed, and the stands in mixed oak-pine forest habitats are more susceptible to the spread of alien species, but are able to regenerate faster after a disturbance. These results are in line with observations from other parts of Poland and other European countries.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of competition on diameter growth of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) in forests with complex structure. For each tree we calculated set of 20 competition indexes in 4 variants for determining the scale of the competitors influence. The use of such a set of indices, allowed to describe accurately the competition between trees in the specific conditions for the particular tree species. Given species belong to the group of shade−tolerant trees. The species composition of the tree stands and their structure are the results of long−lasting natural processes, which is different than in the majority of Polish forests. The empirical material collected in the years 1993 and 2003 in four sample plots of 0.5 ha each located in natural stands of the Roztocze National Park in south−eastern Poland. The relationships between the competition and the growth were analysed using generalized additive models. This method allows to extend of the standard linear model, by taking into account non−linear function of each variable. One of the option of quantifying competition processes is the use of competition indices. The competition situation of an individual tree was described using distance−independ and distance−depend indices. Each of analysed species reacts differently on competition. Among the three analyzed species, the best competition index CI15 explained 48.3% of the variation diameter growth of European beech (tab. 2). The competition index CI3 explained only 26.1% of the variation diameter growth of European hornbeam (tab. 2). It turned out to be the worst result for the described species. The competition index CI14 explained 31.1% of the variation diameter growth of silver fir (tab. 2). Additional use of DBH in the models, increased values of the coefficient of determination, and extended the possibilities to use the developed models.

The aim of this study was to assess the current state of small-leaved lime stands under climate change, as well as to identify optimal conditions for the occurrence and further growth of natural lime regeneration under the stand canopy to grow productive and sustainable mixed stands. The areas of small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) stands in plain Ukrainian forests and mixed stands with English oak (Quercus robur L.) were defined according to reference materials (as of 2016). Growth and liveability peculiarities of natural regeneration of lime under the canopy of oak-lime stands in climate change were identified. The main stand characteristics contributing to maximal appearance and further development of advance growth of lime, such as composition, age and relative density of stocking, were determined. It was found that the lime stands of vegetative origin occupy the largest part of the lime forests’ area, being less resilient and productive than those originated from seeds. Small-leaved lime is the best associated species in mixed oak stands. The presence of lime improves health, assortment composition, and productivity of oak stands and increases their resistance against pests and diseases. In the future, lime can play an important role in the adaptation of forests to climate change due to its biological and forest properties and adaptability to a sustainable existence in a relatively wide range of environmental conditions. A summary of the studies complements a system of knowledge about the current state of lime stands as well as peculiarities of their regeneration and growth. The data obtained can be used as a theoretical base for forest management to promote natural regeneration and maintain the sustainability of these forests.

The essential role in credit risk modeling is Loss Given Default (LGD) estimation. LGD is treated as a random variable with bimodal distribution. For LGD estimation advanced statistical models such as beta regression can be applied. Unfortunately, the parametric methods require amendments of the “inflation” type that lead to mixed modeling approach. Contrary to classical statistical methods based on probability distribution, the families of classifiers such as gradient boosting or random forests operate with information and allow for more flexible model adjustment. The problem encountered is comparison of obtained results. The aim of the paper is to present and compare results of LGD modeling using statistical methods and data mining approach. Calculations were done on real life data sourced from one of Polish large banks.

In this study, the presence of changes leading towards renaturalization of the fertile deciduous forests has been established. An increase in the proportion of deciduous tree species and herbaceous species from clearings or forest margins also has been noted. The main direction of changes involved increase in humidity, trophic properties and reaction of soil. Improvement in properties of the ground forest, which is associated with an increase in dead organic matter counteracting the negative effect of beech leafs is the main cause of the changes. Ongoing processes should lead to an increase in the tree and undergrowth biodiversity, at the same time causing a decrease in spatial heterogeneity of the deciduous piedmont forest.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper was to describe processes that took place in the Łowicz-Błonia plain during the long-term drought of 2018 and the series of short-term droughts in 2019. For our analysis we used multispectral satellite images of high- ground hornbeam and mixed coniferous forest in the Młochowski Forest from 2017–2021. Sentinel-2 images provided the means to investigate the impact of mild droughts on the values of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index), and MSI (Moisture Stress Index) as well as their monthly variability and differences between forest divisions. During periods without drought, the variability of all three indices was typical for each phase of the vegetation cycle: in the spring months the value of NDVI and MSI increased, NDWI decreased. During the autumn months, the behavior of the indicators reversed. In the period of long-term drought in 2018, the NDWI was higher in forest divisions with aspecies composition characteristic of a mixed coniferous forest compared to divisions with a higher share of deciduous trees such as oaks and hornbeams, including the rigorously protected area of high–hornbeam forest. NDWI was the only index to show a downward trend during mild droughts, while during moderate droughts, also a decrease in NDVI and MSI was observed. This was most clearly seen in deciduous forests. We did not observed any correlation of NDVI, NDWI, or MSI with the protection status of the forest or the absence thereof
