: The subjects under consideration here are the philosophical consequences arising as the cosmic dimension to ecology is taken into account. If the habitat for Earthlife is a part of the cosmic environment, then cosmology and astrophysics become a part of ecology. The human species is furthermore a participant in a vast process of cosmic evolution, with sustainable-development strategy thus defi ning the conditions for – and time needed to achieve – a technological civilisation allowing Earth-life to be evacuated to another part of the galaxy as and when the further existence of life on this planet becomes (or threatens to become) an impossibility. In the context of such a cosmic perspective, the value ascribable to our scientifi c and technological civilisation (and future versions thereof) changes, given that only this kind of civilisation offers a chance for Earth-life to persist in an extra-terrestrial environment.

Opis:
Radon in the environment of early Earth was present in sites, determined by location of deposits of uranium, in very different geological formations. According to the decay of uranium-238, the total production of radon at the beginnings was twice as high as now and was continuously diminishing to the present levels. This nuclide could not play as big a role as do radioactive elements connected with the presence of high concentration of 235U, which was high enough in some places to give rise to formation of natural nuclear fission reactors (e.g. Oklo phenomenon in Africa). The main role of ionizing radiation in prebiotic chemistry and biological evolution was played by low LET (linear energy transfer) radiations, as deep penetrating sources of external energy. High LET radiations are of low penetration and could act only superficially. Radon is an exception, due to its easy transfer in the air. Therefore, it could play a role already in the cases of these early organisms which exhibited the gaseous exchange of chemical compounds with the surrounding atmosphere. The action was destructive, but, on the other hand, was also mutagenic. Nevertheless, the general quantitative effect of radon on the global scale could not be larger than of other radioactive nuclides. Presented considerations are part of the chapter by the present author on the role of nuclear and radiation chemistry in astrobiology, in the monograph published by American Scientific Publishers [1].

Opis:
The article attempt to define YouTube's cyberculture by describing a model of its user and by showing the ways of participation in this particular cyberspace. Author starts his research by mentioning the rick roll strategy as one of the major practices of 'using' the YouTube content. However the main part of the article is concentrating on the efforts to reveal YouTube as a cyberculture thanks to the analysis of Life in a Day production and its reception. And so, one of the crucial theories that constitute YouTube as an individual medium is the one explored by Richard Grusin. Grusin's thesis about the re-mediated and pre-mediated aspects of new media helps to understand the main idea of YouTube as a socio- technical proposition as well as Jan van Dijk's characteristic of the new media offers like fragmentarization of the cultural texts or its constant visualization. By referring to the Life in a Day project, author of the article is able to point out the basic determinants of YouTube's cyberculture by describing it as an example of digitalized bedroom culture and snack culture (both terms links with a specific tradition of thinking about the media consumers and consumption itself).

The atomic structure of minerals and organic molecules is remarkably similar. In particular, between minerals and amino acids, which are the building blocks of life on Earth. The hypothesis tested here is the possibility of energy transfer from minerals to amino acids, in the form of solar energy. The experiments tested the theory that the brighter intensity of light in the early Earth may have kick -started the chemical reactions needed for life. The scenario under investigation is that of light reacting with quartz sand grains exposed at the surface. The quartz grains contain water within the pore spaces, which has basic amino acid structures within in. The experiments determined that the vibration of piezoelectric quartz altered the structure of amino acid molecules.

RNA world hypothesis

Opis:
Among the numerous hypotheses offering a scenario for the origin of life on Earth, the one called “The RNA World” has gained the most attention. According to this hypothesis RNA acted as a genetic information storage material, as a catalyst of all metabolic reactions, and as a regulator of all processes in the primordial world. Various experiments show that RNA molecules could have been synthesized abiotically, with the potential to mediate a whole repertoire of metabolic reactions. Ribozymes carrying out aminoacyl-tRNA reactions have been found in SELEX (systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment) approaches and the development of a ribosome from a RNA-built protoribosome is easy to imagine. Transfer RNA aminoacylation, protoribosome origin, and the availability of amino acids on early Earth allowed the genetic code to evolve. Encoded proteins most likely stabilized RNA molecules and were able to create channels across membranes. In the modern cell, DNA replaced RNA as the main depositor of genetic information and proteins carry out almost all metabolic reactions. However, RNA is still playing versatile, crucial roles in the cell. Apart from its classical functions in the cell, a huge small RNA world is controlling gene expression, chromatin condensation, response to environmental cues, and protecting the cell against the invasion of various nucleic acids forms. Long non-coding RNAs act as crucial gene expression regulators. Riboswitches act at the level of transcription, splicing or translation and mediate feedback regulation on biosynthesis and transport of the ligand they sense. Alternative splicing generates genetic variability and increases the protein repertoire in response to developmental or environmental changes. All these regulatory functions are essential in shaping cell plasticity in the changing milieu. Recent discoveries of new, unexpected and important functions of RNA molecules support the hypothesis that we live in a New RNA World.

The purpose of the paper is to present the results of the stochastic modelling with uncertainty performed with the use of Monte Carlo (MC) simulation with 10,000 cycles and a confidence interval of 95 %, as recommended. Analysed REEs were fitted by lognormal distributions by using the Crystal Ball® (CB) spreadsheet-based software after defining the geometric mean value (μg) and the standard deviation (σg), automatically calculated (matches) the lower, as well as, upper boundaries of lognormal distribution. The number of replications of a simulation affects the quality of the results. The principal output report provided by CB and presented in this study consists of the graphical representation in the form of the frequency chart, percentiles summary, and statistics summary. Additional CB options provide a sensitivity analysis with tornado diagrams. The data that was used for MC simulation of the LCI model includes available and published data concerning associated with the REEs. This paper discusses the results and show that the adopted approach is applicable for any REEs used in the LCI studies under uncertainty. The results obtained from this study can be used as the first step in performing a full LCA analysis and help practitioners as well as decision-makers in the environmental engineering and management.

Opis:
Szczególnego znaczenia nabierają jodły w opisach puszczy, na przykład w Popiołach i w Puszczy jodłowej, sosny w Ludziach bezdomnych, brzozy w Róży i Urodzie życia.
Stefan Żeromski used dendrological motives in his work in a special, complex way. Trees (backwoods, forest, garden) are not only the background for the action of his works, but also constitute an important carrier of various content: existential, metaphysical and historical. They are elements of experiencing time and space; they become a sign of memory as well as a figure of reality. These descriptions already appear in the youthful diary. Firs are particularly important in the descriptions of the forest, e.g. in „Popioły" [The Ashes] and „Puszcza jodłowa" [The Fir forest], pine in „Ludzie bezdomni" [Homeless people], birches in „Róża" [The Rose] and „Uroda życia" [The Charm of life]. One of the most poignant dendrological paintings carries „Zemsta jest moją…" [The Revenge is mine] where the writer built a model of the world, referring to the motifs of trees and their elements. Trees in Żeromski’s work are symbolised and often function on the basis of Jungian archetypes. It is worth pointing out some similarities with the inclusion of dendrological motives in Orzeszkowa or Rodziewiczówna, as well as in Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz.

Pierre Michon’s Vies minuscules reveals something of the narrator’s life through eight mini-biographies. Could this be an indirect autobiography? Are the boundaries between the characters and the narrator fully inaccessible? Is this story an attempt at mythologizing reality? This article addresses the close relationship that is built between autobiography and reality writing in Vies minuscules. The absence of separating limits between the « real » of the minuscules and autobiography allows for fiction to become he place of a mythologizing of the « I » through the fabulousness of the « reality » of those characters.

Opis:
An original hypothesis of the origin of life in an atmosphere of ancient Earth is proposed. It is shown that the atmospheric conditions of ancient Earth had been beneficial not only for initial abiogenic synthesis of organic monomers, but also for their polymerization and decomposition of protobiopolymers. Protobionts are particles of water aerosol the size of 1–10 microns. The proposed hypothesis can tie together all relevant facts on the early Earth’s history, antiquity and ecology features of methanogenic Achaea, the small size of prokaryotes, the discovery of fossilized prokaryotes in meteorites and others. The hypothesis provides an opportunity to consider the evolution of all principal components of the cell in a continuous relationship with each other and with the environment, from the earliest stages of the origin of life. According to the proposed hypothesis, the origin of life can be considered in conjunction with the development of formation of biogeochemical cycles as a natural process, which is an integral part of the birth of planets.

This essay considers the contradiction between a free market and ecology in a contemporary form. Neoliberalism as a basis of globalization entails the reduction of society to its economic dimensions and, as a result, a lack of any control over any of the political and social consequences that production will have for humankind and the Earth. A special concern may arouse neo-liberal project of reduction of political role of the state. In conclusion the author repeats Marx's thesis that capitalism creates production that will destroy the Earth and the workers. Global capitalism and the prosperity of the Earth are impossible to maintain in tandem. Humankind must choose.
