Opis:
In general, the performance of a ship in service is different from that obtained on shipyard sea trial. Apart from any differences due to loading conditions, and for which due correction should be made, these differences arise principally from the weather, fouling and surface deterioration of the hull and propeller. The influence of the weather, both in terms of wind and sea conditions, is an extremely important factor in ship performance analysis. Consequently, the weather effects needs to be taken into account if a realistic evaluation is to be made. The primary role of the ship service analysis is a standard of performance data, under varying operational and environmental conditions. The resulting information, derived from this data, becomes the basis for operational and chartering decision. In addition, the part for the data records is to enable the analysis of trends of either the hull or machinery, from which the identification of potential failure scenarios and maintenance decisions can be derived. The traditional method of data collection is the deck and engine room log records, and this is the most commonly used method today. In terms of data processing and capabilities, this method of data collection is far from ultimate, since involves significant data distortion risk. Instrumentation errors are always a potential source of concern in performance analysis methods. Such errors are generally in the form of instrument drift or gross distortion of the reading. However, these can generally be detected by the use of trend analysis techniques. The procedure for the evaluation of the ship's service performance, that relies on proven methods of main propulsion engine service data analysis used and applied for container vessel - small feeder. The vessel is equipped with indirect main propulsion, driven by means of modern medium speed engine. The different approach demonstrated to achieve the reliable and accurate main engine performance. The difference in developed engine power has been found, that corresponds well to registered sea trial results and engine retrofitting reports done, in order to limit the effective power.

Opis:
The IMO has adopted Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) in order to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping. And, the shipping industry is required to develop and improve the energy saving ship operation technologies to meet the above IMO guideline. The weather routing is one of the energy saving navigation technologies and widely adopted by oceangoing merchant ships. The effectiveness of the weather routing mainly depends on the accuracy of weather forecast data and the ship’s propulsion performance prediction. The propulsion performance in the actual sea is usually predicted using the Self Propulsion Factors obtained by model tests. It is necessary to understand the propulsion performance characteristics in the actual sea conditions for the improvement of propulsion performance prediction. From the above points of view, the authors performed full‐scale experiments using a training ship in order to investigate the propulsion performance characteristics in the actual sea. This paper describes the analysis results on the characteristics of Power Curves and Self Propulsion Factors under various weather and sea conditions.

Opis:
To obtain a reasonable evaluation of the performance of waterjet propulsion at the design stage, a semi-theoretical and semi-empirical method is used to calculate the fundamental parameters of waterjet propulsion performance using an iterative approach. To calculate the ship’s resistance, a boundary element method based on three-dimensional potential flow theory is used to solve the wave-making resistance, and an empirical approach is used to evaluate the viscous resistance. Finally, the velocity and pressure of the capture area of the waterjet propulsion control volume are solved based on turbulent boundary layer theory. The iteration equation is established based on the waterjet-hull force-balance equation, and the change in the ship’s attitude and the local loss of the intake duct are considered. The performance parameters of waterjet propulsion, such as resistance, waterjet thrust, thrust deduction, and the physical quantity of the control volume, are solved by iteration. In addition, a PID-controlled free-running ship model is simulated using the RANS CFD method as a comparison. We apply the proposed approach and the RANS CFD method to a waterjetpropelled trimaran model, and the simulation process and the results are presented and discussed. Although there are some differences between the two methods in terms of the local pressure distribution and thrust deduction, the relative error in the evaluation results for the waterjet propulsion performance is generally reasonable and acceptable. This indicates that the present method can be used at the early stages of ship design without partial information about the waterjet propulsion system, and especially in the absence of a physical model of the pump.

Opis:
The wake equalizing duct (WED) is one of the most commonly used energy saving devices for improving the propulsion performance of a ship; and reducing the propeller-excited vibrations and viscous resistance forces. During the last three decades considerable research and development activities have taken into place within this context. Most of these devices are used to improve propulsive efficiency, but some of them aims to improve other performance characteristics, such as cavitations, vibration, noise, maneuverability, etc. Marine propellers are the most common propulsion systems; nevertheless, it is possible to improve its propulsive performance using additional auxiliary propulsor devices (unconventional propulsors). Two versions of an existing ship in normal version and fitted with WED device were analyzed in order to demonstrate the influence on the WED device on the propeller cavitations . It was determined that the values for the pressure coefficient is 1.98 for without WED situation and 2.029 for WED situation. The difference is not so significant that, the conclusion is that WED device did not have influence over the cavitations of the propeller. Either optimization of dimension and form of WED did not help in reducing negative effects of cavitations. Not being a study in this paperwork, to decrease the cavitations we have other choices including a sound design of the propeller biased to improve the propeller behavior in cavitations. WED is clearly not a choice.

Opis:
Efficiency is crucial for an airplane to reduce both costs of operations and emissions of pollutants. There are several airplane concepts that potentially allow for increasing the efficiency. A few of them were not investigated thoroughly enough yet. The inverted joined wing configuration, where the upper wing is positioned in the front of the lower one is an example of such a concept. Therefore, a project consisting of an aerodynamic analysis and optimisation, development of the software for multidisciplinary optimisation, development of an electric propulsion system, development of an experimental scaled demonstrator, wind tunnel testing and flight-testing was undertaken by consortium led by the Institute of Aviation, including also Warsaw University of Technology, Air Force Institute of Technology and small company MSP. Results of this project led to the conclusion that inverted joined wing configuration allows to build an airplane with the best performance in the world, but its advantage against conventional airplanes is marginal. One reason for this is large trimming drag of the configuration with relatively high position of the thrust vector. Therefore, other configurations of the propulsion were also considered to see if airplane performance could be further improved. This effort is described in the present paper.

Analyzing the systems in terms of reliability, we often treat them as the technical objects only, omitting human interaction or assuming that operator has constant characteristics. This significantly distorts the results obtained in this way, since human is a part of the system with special properties that can change together with the predisposition of the operator and the conditions under which he operates. These attributes may have a major influence on the reliability of the systems. Therefore, analysis of systems reliability should include a reliability of operator and its properties. In this paper presented the antropotechnical reliability structure based on selected installation, which is a part of ships propulsion system. Also operator’s functions were defined and the analysis of human reliability, taking into account various properties of the operator and the external conditions, were performed. Then, there is assessed the influence of operator and environmental factors on the value of the entire system reliability. The study used the reliability data of the container ship propulsion system equipped with low-speed piston engine, fixed pitch propeller and auxiliary installations. These data were obtained from studies of expert judgments (Brandowski A., Frąckowiak W. et al.) in the years 2007–2009. For HRA (human reliability analysis), HEART technique (Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique) was used, together with the human unreliability values and correction factors developed by the authors of this method. Study results illustrate influence of environmental, ergonomic factors and the properties of the operator on the reliability of the antropotechnical systems. The studies were subjected exemplification on fuel treatment installation as a part of ships propulsion systems.

Presented method will be useful for preliminary design when is no need to acquire real test data. Numerical model was build for steady state operations, because maintenance manual for selected engine includes tests records only at its state. In that case helicopter turboshaft manuals are very similar, steady state was used widely for testing in TB3 and T700 family engines. Steady state reduced effect of rotor head positions which was influencing total engine performance. TB3-117 helicopter turboshaft engine, engine cutaway sections, first step - expansion ratios, second step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, engine inlet mass flow ratio as a function of maximum allowable EGT, and throttle position, third step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, second step - on the ground calculations for different throttle position, performance charts for RR-250 BJ turboshaft, and for TB3-117 M/MT - Mi-14/17, TB3-117 III-series Mi-24 are presented in the paper.

In this paper, the authors presented some technical and economic relations to which a team designing a new means of transport should pay attention. In the first chapter briefly describes the hovercraft designed and built at the Institute of Aviation, as well as showing the certification documents obtained in the process of certification by the Polish Register of Shipping and Inland Navigation Office. The second chapter shows some parts of the production process. In the third chapter shows the drive unit and the characteristics of the selected motor. Problems of selecting a drive unit for a newly designed hovercraft aimed at transporting people and goods were described. The choice of propulsion engine, its quality and the kind of fuel affect the cost of purchase as well as the time and exploitation costs. A user planning a transport network pays particular attention to minimizing operating costs and the consequent reliability and safety. The authors presented regulations and standards, which need to be met by the transport unit designed for use in the public area. Attention was also paid to ecology, noise and pollution. An algorithm, which takes into account the rules of conduct, requirements of the ordering party and conditions of the manufacturer, was proposed. In conclusion, the generalized technical and economic guidelines are proposed which, in the authors’ opinion, may aid the development of a conceptual design of new modes of transport – not only the hovercraft.

In the paper an identification of low speed diesel engine operation in direct propulsion plant equipped with fixed pitch propeller during ship manoeuvring. It was starting of engine and gathering speed of ship. Analysis of engine operation was based on changes of engine torque and time of ship bring up to speed. Operation of reciprocating internal combustion engine consists in converting the supplied fuel energy and delivering it to ship propeller. This condition implicates converting different amounts of energy in different time. The main attention was given to operation of engine caused by crank pin forces in wide range of revolutions and their influence on mechanical load of ship propulsion plant. The torque is the major component determining the engine load. As a matter of fact its mean value is low, but a passing torque can be four times higher than the rated torque. The second important component of propulsion engine operation is the time of ship acceleration from one speed to another. It determines dynamic properties of the ship describing its reductional feature. This time is determined in dependence on other parameters characterizing operation of ship propulsion plant and ship motion by means of dimensional analysis. These parameters were regarded as dimension quantities of three-dimensional space. Thus the three independent in dimension parameters can be noted in digital form in dimensional functions. The knowledge of operation parameters of ship propulsion plant and the knowledge of ship motion dynamics makes possible rational manoeuvring. It increases safety of ship motion and failure-free operation of ship propulsion engine. The proper operation of engine requires delivery to the propeller such amount of energy, which ensure the motion of ship with required speed in given sailing conditions.

Opis:
The paper describes a concept of wind tunnel investigation of the influence of the pusher propeller cover on its performance. The pusher propeller is one of the most popular types of the airplane propulsion, especially in light sport aircrafts and in the UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Its main advantages is that the engine with the pusher propeller does not affect the visibility from the cockpit and allows for placing an electronic equipment (for example, a camera) in the front part of the UAV’s fuselage. One of main disadvantages of pusher propeller is that it is partially covered by the fuselage and the wings of the airplane, thus the slipstream is distorted. This distortion may reduce the propeller thrust and efficiency. It may also cause vibrations of the propeller blades. This fact is well known, however it is difficult to find any quantitative information about reduction of the propeller performance. Taking it into account, it is worth to treat this subject and show a way to enhance the propeller performance. The wind tunnel tests, which concept has been described in the paper, will include measurements of total aerodynamic loads acting on the investigated object and on the propeller. Measurement of velocity distribution in the slipstream (by pressure measurement and by laser anemometry) will be included as well.

Opis:
To analyse the behaviour of marine diesel engines in unsteady states for different purposes, for example to determine the fuel consumption or emissions level, to adjust the control strategy, to manage the maintenance, etc., a goal-based mathematical model that can be easily implemented for simulation is necessary. Such a model usually requires a wide range of operating data, measured on a test stand. This is a time-consuming process with high costs and the relevant data are not available publicly for a selected engine. The present paper delivers a rapid and relatively simple method for preparing a simulation model of a given marine diesel engine, based only on the widely available data in the project guides indicated for steady state conditions. After establishing the framework of the mathematical model, it describes how the parameters of the model can be adjusted for the simulation model and how the results can be verified as well. Conceptually, this is a trial and error method, but the presented case example makes clear how the parameters can be selected to reduce the number of trials and quickly determine the model parameters. The necessary descriptions are given through a case study, which is the MAN-B&W 8S65ME-C8 marine diesel engine. The engine is assumed to be connected to a constant pitch propeller. The presented mathematical model is a mean-value zero-dimensional type with seven state variables. The other variables of the engine are determined based on the state independent variables and the input value, which is the fuel rate. The paper can be used as a guideline to prepare a convenient mathematical model for simulation, with the minimum publicly available data.

The paper presents results of research on the catalytic decomposition of 98% hydrogen peroxide, using special structures called composite catalyst beds. Such configuration of a catalyst bed can be applied in future green monopropellant thrusters for attitude control systems as well as self-ignitable and restart-able bipropellant engines. A number of catalyst samples, based on aluminum oxides as support and manganese oxides as the active phase, were prepared for testing of catalyst decomposition of 98%+ High Test Peroxide. The aim of the current stage of the test campaign is to select the most promising candidates for further research on 50mm long chamber. The selection is made on the basis of hot test results in which dynamics of decomposition is evaluated. The other criterion is the structural integrity of the catalyst, assessed after the hot test. Support that is susceptible to cracking cannot be qualified as applicable for the next stage of the investigation. The current research has shown that the crucial factor for performance of a catalyst is its specific surface area. The fastest pressure and temperature buildup has been reached for microporous γ-Al2O3 pellet.

Travel is an inseparable part of human life. It is connected not only with private life but also with business life. People want to travel more, farther and faster. That is why air transport is currently one of the fastest-growing areas of passenger transport, and airlines carry more and more passengers from year to year. Due to the growing negative impact of air transport on the natural environment, research aimed at the development of technologies to reduce the negative impact of air transport is becoming more and more important. One of the possibilities for improving the situation is the use of alternative energy sources, limiting the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The paper aimed to analyze the meaningfulness of replacing the classic power unit in a light transport aircraft with a hybrid, combustion-electric power unit. Analyzes were made with the use of simulation methods for the PZL M-28 aircraft.
