Opis:
The canonry building at 11, Ostrów Tumski Street in Poznań is situated on the western side of Ostrów. A one-floor building on the plan of an extended rectangle, with a tall, hip roof. The subject of defensive walls and canonries has been explored by many researchers since early 19th century. Those who wrote about them included Józef Łukaszewicz in 1838, the priest Józef Nowacki in 1959, Izabela Jasiecka and Henryk Kondziela in 1965, Eugeniusz Linette in 1983, Konrad Lutuński, Piotr Budzian and Alicja Karłowska-Kamzowa in 1990, Antoni Kąsinowski in 2005, Tomasz Ratajczak in 2008. All of them related both investments to the activity of Bishop Lubrański in the 16th century. It was only Professor Hanna Kočka-Krenz who, in 2006, posed a thesis that the construction of the walls had begun earlier. The architectural research conducted in 2014 by Jerzy Borwiński – in consideration of the fact that the elevation has recently been plastered – was limited to some parts of the interior of the building. After the examination of the roof structure, it was found that the carpenter’s marks in the southern and northern part are made in different systems and that the two, edge top trusses are missing. The research has shown that the present architectural form of the building of Ostrów Tumski 11 canonry in Poznań is a result of the construction modifications in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In the main, those modifications involved adopting the structure of a much older Gothic construction. The most important conclusions drawn out of the research are as follows: the longer, western wall of the building rested on a former defensive wall. The Gothic structure had vertical gables topped triangularly or step-like, in the Gothic convention. The windows in the Gothic building had an axis layout different from the present window openings from the 18th century. There were profiled, beam ceilings over all rooms of the Gothic part of the building. It was determined that the major development of the canonry was in the 19th century, when the northern part of the building was added. The evidence of that is a seam in the walls of the ground floor, block threads of the brick walls, dendrochronological dating of the roof structure, as well as chamfered ceilings over the ground floor, typical of that period. In the dating of the Gothic canonry examined in 2014, in addition to many new discoveries, the complex examination of the roof structure was of a high importance. It was found that there are two completely independent structures on the building. It was confirmed by the conducted dendrochronological analysis of the samples of wood. The wood used in the southern (Gothic) structure was made of the pines cut down in 1476. On the other hand, the wood used in the northern structure comes from the wood of the same type cut down in 1749 and 1750. The Gothic structure of the canonry was made in queenpost structure with lying queen posts. Such systems became popular in our area as late as in the 16th century. Thus, it is possible that we are dealing with a pioneer solution in the territory of Poznań. Consequently, the history of constructions of defensive walls in Ostrów Tumski and the activity of Bishop Jan Lubrański, who did not begin the investment, but only continued the work of his predecessors.

The article’s objective is to present the first graphite goods found at the princely part of the Poznań stronghold. Pottery fragments, a disc with a hole made of graphite sherd, and spindle whorl have been discovered at the foundations of the Mieszko I palatium, next to the remains of a goldsmith’s workshop. Relatively straightforward stratigraphy, despite later destruction caused by numerous construction phases of the Sacred Mary Church, along with accompanied artifacts from the layers, make possible to date these finds to the period stretching from the 10 -1 1th to the 12th 13th centuries and regard them as ‘imports’ from the south. Besides the 12th century settlement at Szeląg, this is the second site in Poznań where this characteristic type of pottery has been found.

The drinking of mineral waters at Ostrów Tumski in Poznań is evidenced by fragments of stoneware bottles with preserved signatures - findings registered during archaeological excavations. Most of the discovered fragments come from 19th century bottles. Only about a dozen items represent containers from the 18th century - a majority of those are probably pieces of seltzer water bottles. In the 19th century the inhabitants of this island in Poznań drank mineral waters from springs located on the territory of today's Germany (Bad Kissingen, Niederselters, Bad Friedrichshall, Bad Ems) and Czechia (Bylany/Male Brezno, Frantiskovy Lazne, Bilina, Zajecic, Marianske Lazne).

roadside well
15/16-17th centuries
Opis:
In July 2008 a roadside well was discovered on the cathedral island in Poznań (to date at least five drawing wells from the late Middle Ages and modern times have been registered).  The well was unearthed at the rose square (excavation pit 51/2008) about 18 m from the facade of the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (and the now nonexistent churchyard) at the level of  56.09 meters above sea level (rubble fill-in) – 50.61 meters above sea level (end of exploration) – Fig. 1.  The object was situated directly next to the road, in a large oval or quadrilateral pit (with rounded corners) ca 3.6 m in diameter, and was ca 5.5 m deep. The wooden construction which protected the walls of the object was done in the post and beam technique – Fig. 2. Many different objects fell (were thrown) into the well while water was being drawn from it, perhaps some of them were redeemed while other remained at the bottom. However, most of the “sunk” relics got into the well while it was being dug or repaired, but especially when it was filled in, i.e. when water was no longer drawn from it (Figs. 4 and 5).The well, which was sunk during the rule of Bishop Jan Lubrański (1499-1520), i.e. at a time of prosperity of Ostrów Tumski in the 16th century, was in use and water was drawn from it in the 15/16-17th centuries. It is difficult to assert what reasons decided about its being

In the first part of the article the author sketches an overview of the history of architectural constructions in the state of the first Piasts. She describes the origins of the „gród" (stronghold), a construction form typical for Slavonic territories of the early Middle Ages. She also characterizes the construction technology and the kinds of fortifications used. The history of the Tum island is discussed from the beginning of settlements there in the context of the emerging Polish state. Since almost the entire knowledge of the stronghold at Ostrów Tumski is rooted in archaeological research, the history of excavations is presented from their beginnings in 1938 up to the most recent results of studies on the fortifications obtained in 2011

utensils with incised/stratched marks
Opis:
During excavations carried out in Ostrów Tumski by the Institute of Prehistory of the Poznań University, a small collection of utensils was found with incised or scratched motifs which are reminiscent of decorations (Figure1). The collection includes an early medieval mug (9th – mid-10th c.; Figure 2:1) as well as jars and a plate (?; 16th c.; Figure 2:2-4) with mysterious signs placed on the receptacles before they were fired (incisions: receptacle 1 and 4) and in the course of use thereof (scratched with a sharp object: receptacle 2 and 3). They were excavated in the ducal garden next to the palace and sacral complex (receptacle 1) and the Gothic St. Mary’s church and the adjacent cemetery (receptacle 2) as well as in the northern part of the island (receptacles 3 and 4). They were excavated from cultural layers (receptacle 1), from a well’s thill (receptacle 2), a wooden waste pond where fish were kept (?; receptacle 4) and a backfill of another well (receptacle 3). On the early medieval mug, where the neck becomes a body, it the middle of its circumference, parallel to the receptacle’s edge, there are signs in the form of a vertical line, a square, another vertical line topped with tiny parallel incisions and two crossing lines incised with a sharp object in a dried utensil before it was fired (Figure 3:1). On the upper part of the body of an almost completely preserved jar, four crossing lines were scratched to form a star, a loop, three intersecting lines – a star, the letter “Y” with three perpendicular lines in the lower part and, slightly lower, a boat /a crescent (?; Figure 3:2). On another jar, in the upper part of its body, next to the handle, a sharp object was used to scratch an inscription made of 6-7 “letters” (Figure 3: 3). At the bottom of a bowl (?), a potter incised with a sharp object a lily and an anchor cross. While only four specimens have been excavated in Ostrów Tumski in Poznań, and the signs are hard to interpret, an attempt can be made to explain the reasons why they were placed on the receptacles. The incisions on two of them were made before the receptacles were fired, hence they can be attributed to the potters’ work. In the case of the mug (Figure 2:1; 3:1), the fact that it was made by the same person was emphasized. The act of incising the bottom of the other utensil (Figure 2:4; 3:4) may have somethingto do with it being made for a specific group of users. On the other hand, the two remaining receptacles were scratched when they were ready so they were marked by the owners at the expense of the utensils’ looks. The jug was preserved almost intact (Figures 2:2; 3:2; 4) and could hold 2 litres of liquid. It is covered with symbols meaningful to its owner, perhaps identifying him/her. A piece of the jug (Figures 2:3, 3:3) bears an inscription which, with some caution, may be interpreted as dialectal words of German or Dutch origin, meaning “my (drinking) utensil”. Irrespective of the correctness of “deciphering” the scratched signs, these are undoubtedly unique hand-written inscriptions from the second half of the 16th century. If anything, it is a good reason to devote attention to them.

The article describes one of the elements of the gothic church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Ostrów Tumski in Poznań - its western gable. It is a crow-stepped construction with twelve pinnacles with floriated terminations and a younger ave-bell.The present forms ceramic pinnacles and fleurons come from the extensive redecoration that the church underwent in mid-19th century, as testified by the dates carved on their underside (1859- illustration 3) and the surviving bills. From older iconography (F.B. Werner 1734; J. Minutoli 1833; K.W. Kielisiński - the 1840s) it is evident that the church also in earlier times had pinnacles, probably gothic ones.It is assumed that the construction of the church was begun by builders from West Pomerania ca. 1430 r., and the edifice was completed by the local stonemasons. From written sources it follows that the gable of the church was erected in 1445 by Lorko of Kościan. It can be supposed that the gothic pinnacles were executed by the local Greater Poland craftsmen.

Opis:
During excavations conducted by Witold Hensel and Jan Żak in 1951 in the capitular garden on Ostrów Tumski in Poznań the researchers discovered a small (8,1 cm long) axehead (ryc. 1), whose surface bore a set of cuts forming an „inscription”. This discovery was named as an archaeological sensation. Despite the fact that it was found in a layer dated to the modern period, it was identified, based on some analogies, as belonging to the 10th–11th c. A group of palaeographers was asked to partake in the studies of the artifact to help reveal the mystery behind this „caption”. Even though their opinions varied, it was generaly accepted that – most probably – these marks were latin STLA letters, interpreted as an abbreviation of the word stella („arrow”). Based on all these findings an entire pyramid of further ideas concerning the artefact’s function and symbolic connotations was built. It was emphasized that this is one of the oldest examples of native epigraphy, that it proved the local population to be able to write (and read) as early as in the 11th c. Additionaly, the axe was expected to hold an unspecified role assiociated with magical rites, etc. Nowadays, owing to a much more extensive knowledge on artefacts of this type, a critical typological-chronological analysis of the given specimen leads to quite different conclusions. Analogies invoked by J. Żak (1956) either bear serious disparities in details or are much younger than he suggested. The described axehead is a typical representative of M. Głosek’s (1996) late medieval/modern type IX. This identification is further reinforced by the chronology of this find’s context – the layer in which it was found was dated to the years 1500–1700 based on a large quantity of modern (glazed) pottery, fragments of stove tiles, roof tiles, bricks and iron objects. The small size of Poznań’s axehead is also not suprising. Beside the massive specimens of late medieval and modern axes, miniature forms are known as well (ryc. 2). Their function is not clearly specified in the literature, although they are usually identified as carpentry and fine woodworking tools or children’s toys. To sum up the elaboration so far, it is clear that the artefact from Ostrów Tumski in Poznań represents a typical late medieval, or – taken the chronology of the find’s context – modern form. Both the shape and dimensions are typical for many axeheads from Central Europe at that time. There is no reason whatsoever to continue to claim that this specimen is of early medieval dating and that it bore some special symbolic meaning. The revaluation of its dating allows a different approach to the set of marks, „inscription” if someone wills, found on the blade’s surface. If this set of cuts indeed forms a caption, in the context of widespread practice of labeling such items by their manufacturers and knowing a great handful of heavily ornamented axeheads from the time, the presence of these „letters” is not especially striking. Another thing is whether the newly outlined chronological context allows their proper interpretation, if any. This problem, however, should be left for specialists in the field of palaeography.

The article contains an analysis of woven fascines located under the northern part of the early-medieval defensive banks on Ostrów Tumski in Poznan. The structures, similar to the contemporary timber frame structures, had the task of accumulating the material (sand) carried by the river along the line of the planned fortifications. The author analysed woven fascines located under the northern piece of the defensive banks of the Poznan stronghold (registered at the 5 Posadzego site) and identified them as remains of hydro-technical infrastructure. The structures, similar to the contemporary timber frame structures, had the task of accumulating the material (sand) carried by the river along the line of the planned defensive banks. Similar structures had been discovered in the northern part of the 17 Ostrów Tumski site yet their function was not identified. The author also presents the chronology of the specific phases of the bank construction (based on the results of tree-ring-dating) and structure elements (pilots, starlings, the bank’s turn, stone founda¬tions). This is also an indication of an intended constructing the Poznan cathedral as the possible reason for extending the range of the fortifications around 980.
