Opis:
Sewage sludge used for reclamation of egraded areas or in agriculture must have a certain total heavy metal content, as required by law. In practice, however, it is important to carry out a fractional analysis of the elements contained in the sludge. This activity allows to determine the chemical form of a given metal, thanks to which it is possible to assess the assimilability of elements by plants. The study proved that the fraction of certain metals in sewage sludge can vary depending on the period studied. The combination of elements with other compounds in sludge from one treatment plant can vary from month to month. Once analysis has been carried out, it should not be the basis for assessing the bioavailability of metals if sludge from a given treatment plant were to be sampled several times a year.

Opis:
Despite recording the worst heavy metal disaster involving children, there is still scarcity of information on risk assessment of playground soils in Nigeria. In this study, thirty-six soil samples at 0-5 cm depth were collected from nine playgrounds in Owerri metropolis during the dry and rainy seasons. Five heavy metals were fractionated into six chemical fractions using a modified sequential extraction scheme and mean concentrations quantified by AAnalyst 400 Perkin Elmer AAS. Predictive risk models were used to obtain information about the risk of metals contamination to children using these playgrounds for longer periods. These reveal that there were no significant differences in the mean values of bioconcentration factors of all five metals in the various playgrounds for the two years of data. Even though risk values for both dry and rainy season followed the same trend, it was observed that the Zinc showed highest bioconcentration factors (1.6), average daily dose (230.08 mg/kg/day) and risk (5095593 mg/kg/6years). Over all, playgrounds UPS, TSO and SCP had highest mean risk values, respectively. Though with no clear trend, mobility factors showed a weak and positive correlation with risk. Children in playgrounds of public schools within Owerri metropolis could, therefore, be at risk of Mn, Cu and Zn toxicity problems as projected risk values were high for all studied playgrounds. This assessment could help identify playgrounds with urgent need for heavy metals reduction goals, consequently contributing to preserving children’s health.

Opis:
The paper presents distribution of zinc, manganese and iron in fractions of soil treated with tannery sludge and compost of tannery sludge and peat, and, for the sake of comparison, the soil from a plot treated with farmyard manure (FYM), and mineral fertilisers. Total soil contents of zinc ranged from 38.0 to 47.3 mg kg-1 of soil. The share of mobile zinc forms ranged between 6.05-7.93%. Percentage of the exchangeable form was between 5.8-7.5% of the total Zn contents, while the share of forms bound with organic matter ranged between 10.7 and 12.7%. A considerable part of zinc was bound with manganese and iron oxides. Between 30.14- 43.72% of Zn were found in the residual form. Organic and mineral treatment influenced the share of easily soluble manganese compounds. It ranged between 15.6-19.7%. The least of manganese (1.0-2.0%) occurred in the compounds with crystalline iron oxides. The exchangeable form constituted between 3.4-4.2%, organic fraction accumulated slightly more. Manganese oxides retained the most of the element. Trace amounts of iron were revealed in the first three fractions. The biggest part of this metal was found in sparingly soluble compounds, mainly oxides (over 40%) and on residual fraction (over 30%).

Opis:
The subject of the paper was to determine chromium and cadmium fractions in the soils treated with tannery organic materials. Methods, characteristics of experimental materials and the tested soils were presented in the first part of the paper. After four years of investigations soil samples were collected for the assessment of the total content of chromium and cadmium and their fractions. Results of a sequential chemical extraction confirmed literature data on the weak mobility of this metal in the soil. After application of the studied fertilisers, the share of the most mobile Cr fractions was slight. Iron oxides and residual fractions were most important for chromium accumulation. Cadmium mobility in the soil and its easy uptake by plants is related to a considerable share of mobile forms. A large share of mobile form was noticed in the analysed soils (54.5-68.3%). Exchangeable fraction bound smaller amounts of cadmium (6.8-13.2%). Similar amounts of cadmium were accumulated in the fractions bound to manganese oxides (8.5-19.6%). Organic matter did not contribute to this element binding and the amounts of cadmium stored in this fraction were 2.3-6.6%. Only very small amount of cadmium was accumulated in the form bound with the initial minerals.

Opis:
The present investigations aimed at determining the effect of various organic materials, i.e. farmyard manure (FYM), organic tannery sludge and compost of such sludge and peat on lead, copper and nickel fractions content in soil. Doses of peat compost and organic sludge were calculated according to the nitrogen amount per a FYM dose. After four years of experiment, fractions of Pb, Cu and Ni compounds were assessed in the soil from individual plots using the Zeien and Brummer's sequence chemical extraction method. Heavy metal contents were determined using a ICP-AES in JY 238 Ultrace apparatus. Lead accumulated mainly in the form bound with organic matter and with amorphic iron oxides. This metal distribution reveals its slight share in the mobile and exchangeable forms. Composts and sludge introduced into the soil did not affect any significant changes of the individual lead forms share as compared to FYM and NPK treated plots and the control. Some amount of copper occurred as mobile forms in all the soils. In the soil of all the treated plots, copper occurred mainly bound with organic matter and amorphic iron oxides. The basic share of nickel was found in the residual fraction bound with internal crystalline nets of initial elements. Beside the residual form, nickel was connected mainly with organic matter.

Opis:
Plastic consolidation of highly fragmented materials is a cost-effective way to recover aluminum alloys. In this process, metal in the form of chips, powders, or ribbons omits the melting step that is typical for conventional scrap recycling; by that, it significantly reduces both energy expenses and material losses. By reducing the number of operations, the cost of labor and expenditures on environmental protection can be decreased. In addition, the solid bonding of metals in highly dispersed forms allows us to create heterogeneous structures that could be difficult to obtain in traditional processes. In the present study, the influence of the addition of Cu powder (99.7 wt.%) on the bonding quality of aluminum powder (99.7 wt.%) during hot extrusion is being examined. The examined materials contained aluminum powder with the addition of 5 wt.% of Cu powder. The mixture of these powders were cold compacted to produce an 80-mm-long charge for the extrusion process. Plastic consolidation was conducted at three different temperatures: 300°, 350°, and 400°C. As a result, rods 8 mm in diameter were obtained. Mechanical tests combined with microstructure observations and electrical conductivity tests were performed for the as-extruded materials.

Our objective has been to determine the total content of magnesium, iron, chromium and zinc, as well as the heavy metal fractions in selected natural fertilisers, such as swine and bovine manure and poultry litter from laying hens and broilers. The total content of the metals was determined by the ICP-AES method following dry mineralisation in a muffle furnace at 450°C and dissolving the ash in HCl (1:1). Fractions of Fe, Zn and Cr were isolated by the 3-step sequential fractionation method proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). This study has shown that the analysed organic materials had different content of the determined metals. The largest amount of Mg was found in litter from laying hens and the largest amounts of Fe, Cr and Zn were in litter from broiler chickens. The smallest amount of Mg was found in swine manure, Fe and Cr were the least abundant in litter from laying hens, and the lowest Zn content was in bovine manure. The content of these four heavy metals was significantly differentiated by the origin of fertiliser. The exchangeable fraction F1 had the smallest share in the total Fe content among all the fertilisers. As for chromium, this fraction made the smallest contribution to the total Cr content in litter from laying hens and broilers while the reducible fraction F2 was the smallest part of the total content in both types of manure. Fraction F1 of zinc was the smallest in the total content in swine and bovine manure and while the oxidisable fraction F3 made up the smallest share in the total content of this metal in litter from broilers.

The purpose of this study was to determine the total content of cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, zinc and their fractions in organic soils of Podlasie used as permanent grassland. The research material were samples taken from 30 soils of the Podlasie province in 2011-2013. The samples were taken from the determined layer to depth of 0-30 cm. Basic physicochemical properties were determined in the taken soil samples: organic carbon content, pH in 1 M KCl potentiometrically. The total content of metals after mineralization in aqua regia was determined, and cadmium fractions were determined with a modified BCR method. The measurements were conducted by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy with electrothermal atomization using Varian AA-100 spectrometer. It was found that only 2 soils can be included in the soils with first pollution degree due to the cadmium content. The content of other metals was at geochemical background level. The distribution of investigated metals in the fractions in studied organic soils was different comparing to mineral soils. Most of the analyzed elements were present in the fraction associated with organic substance, which limited their mobility, as evidenced by their low share in the available and potentially available fraction. The proportion of metals in the residual fraction was low, which is typical for organic soils. The share of studied metals in particular fractions varied depending on the sampling date, which may be related to the climatic conditions course in the study period and the treatments performed on these soils.

Sediments of Rzeszów Reservoir were characterized by a higher content of zinc compared to other heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni and Cd). The strongest correlations between pairs of heavy metals were Cr-Ni, Ni-Zn, Cu-Ni and Cr-Zn, while there was also a clear relationship between the total chromium and nickel content and the pH value, as well as the percentage of organic matter in the sediments (Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni). The content of chromium and copper occurred at levels exceeding the geochemical background, and the sediments could be classified as of purity class 2 (according to the PIG criterion) or class 3 (according to the Müller’s classification). Ecotoxicological criteria indicate that levels of chromium, nickel and cadmium could affect aquatic life. However, the heavy metals differ in mobility and bioavailability. The highest percentage of ion exchangeable fraction was recorded for nickel, and the lowest for chromium. This means that sediments have a greater ability to release nickel into the water column, as a result of which they are a secondary source of pollution for the aquatic ecosystem.

In order to evaluate a potential threat to soil environment by heavy metals, it is important to separate and determine their fractions by means of sequential extraction. The research aimed at evaluating the total content of lead and chromium as well as their fractions in soils localized on a moraine slope in the Siedlce Heights (transects A and B). Sequential fractionation of these elements was carried out according to Zeien and Brümmer’s method. Chemical analyses revealed varied contents of seven lead and chromium fractions in the soils. The largest amounts of both heavy metals were mostly recorded in the residual fraction (F7), and those of lead also in the organic fraction (F4). The least lead was found in the exchangeable fraction (F2) (it was not detected in easily soluble fraction F1), while the least chromium appeared in the easily soluble (F1) and organic fractions (F4). Statistical processing revealed that the examined lead and chromium fractions generally depended on separated fractions, total contents of these metals, and some properties of analyzed soils.

W badanych glebach, w transekcie A i B zanotowano istotne związki korelacyjne między udziałem miedzi w wydzielonych frakcjach, a jej zawartością ogólną, zawartością węgla związków organicznych a frakcją organiczną (F4), pojemnością sorpcyjną CEC oraz frakcją iłową gleby (< 0,002 mm).
The research was aimed at evaluating the total contents of copper and its fractions in soils situated on a moraine slope in Siedlce Upland. Sequential fractionation was carried out according to the Zeien and Brümmer method. The speciation analyses indicate that the metal was bound to different parts of the soils’ solid phase. The highest copper content was found in the residual fraction (F7) in mother rock, and the lowest in the easily soluble (F1) and exchangeable (F2) fractions. In soils of transect A and B the correlation coefficients demonstrated that the amounts of copper in separated fractions showed a significant correlation with the total content of copper, fraction of clay, sorption capacity, organic carbon content and organic fraction (F4).
