The article is an attempt at addressing the problem of "masculinity" as a historically privileged category in the social and philosophical tradition. In the dichotomous gender system, femininity is usually valued as aesthetic quality, while masculinity stands as an ethical value. This distinction, suggesting the subordinated and disadvantaged position of "femininity" derives from ancient philosophy and biblical tradition and was strengthened not only by philosophical writings but also by symbolic, legal, economic and social practices. By sketching a review of positions and confronting the stereotypical image of "masculinity" with the complex reality of multiple forms of masculine expressions, the article brings the situation of "masculinity" in the world organized by the phallogocentric symbolic order.

This research paper aims to present the issue of gender studies as a scientific discipline embed in certain research context and in a network of relations with such ideas and conceptions as feminism and queer theory. By analyzing the historical and philosophical context and the range of influence in the area of these three disciplines, I consider the way how they popularly function in the scientific and common discourse. By relating both disciplines to each other and confronting them with the chronology, I analyze possible variants of thinking the sequent of these disciplines or their ahistorical functioning. I also search for the similarities between them, which could advocate a diachronic view and place in the causal context that calls to the synchronic attempt. In that way I consider all points of view and speculate validity or invalidity of synchronic attempt to gender studies, feminism and queer theory. Starting from asking for the historism or ahistorism of the term gender and presenting the way it varies from feminist and queer conceptions, I consecutively analyze feminism with reference to gender research (in both variants of the chronological result); gender research with reference to queer studies and queer studies with reference to feminism.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy twórczości Mariana Pankowskiego pod kątem sposobu funkcjonowania w niej zjawiska inności jako figury biograficznej i jej egzemplifikacji. Materiałem badawczym są utwory pochodzące głównie z późniejszego okresu twórczości pisarza – tj. powieści Rudolf, Putto oraz dramat Ksiądz Helena. Główny tok rozważań koncentruje się na genderowych aspektach konstrukcji bohaterów utworów. W ich obrębie dokonuję podziałów i kategoryzacji danych wymiarów inności, m.in. przez wzgląd na sposób ich prezentowania (portretowanie, oswojenie, usprawiedliwienie), oraz analizuję obszary związane z podłożem poczucia wyobcowania. Wykorzystuję liczne konteksty filozoficzne, antropologiczne i estetyczne, analizując materiał badawczy m.in. przy użyciu klucza feministycznego, genderowego oraz opierając się na filozofii inności, cielesności i myśli postsekularnej.
The article is an attempt to analyse the literary output of Marian Pankowski, Polish writer, in terms of the phenomenon of otherness as a biographical figure and its exemplifications. The research material consists of Marian Pankowski’s works mainly from the late period of his literary activity – the novels Rudolf, Putto and the drama Ksiądz Helena. The main course of reflexion concentrates on gender aspects of the literary characters’ construction. It is divided into some minor categories concerning for example the ways of showing the Other (by presenting, familiarizing, justifying) and analyzing areas bound with the essence of sensing own alienation. The analysis of literature was carried out using some cultural, anthropological and esthetic contexts and by the use of feminist, gender or postsecular theory.

The presented paper provides analysis of the notion ‘autobiographism’ contextualised in the literary output of the Polish poet of the enlightenment, Franciszek Karpiński. The question of autobiographism is presented in terms of the literature and philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau. This analysis of the phenomena of authenticity and autobiographicality is concerned with constructing oneself in literature as illustrated by certain works, with the primacy of the mundane The History Of My Age And People With Whom I Lived. The essay draws on The Confessions by Rousseau with a view to specifying the connections between these two novels. The consciousness of the impact Rousseau had on the European sense of literature breaks new ground in the interpretation of the legacy of Karpiński. It also enables the recognition of the complete and compact project situated on the verge of literature and philosophy. The breakthrough of this project is contained in the priority given to the Polish historical literary process and the novelty of the autobiographical attitude, which is considered through the application of basic conceptions concerning autobiographism and the modern identity project of the aesthetic human.
Szkic poświęcony jest zagadnieniu autobiografizmu w twórczości Franciszka Karpińskiego ujmowanemu pod kątem jego związków z twórczością i filozofią Jana Jakuba Rousseau. Analiza zjawisk autentyczności i autobiograficzności dotyka kwestii konstruowania siebie w literaturze na przykładzie konkretnych utworów, z których najważniejszym jest przełomowa dla historii polskiej literatury powieść Karpińskiego Historia mego wieku i ludzi z którymi żyłem. Przedmiotem analizy są m.in. jej związki z Wyznaniami Rousseau. Świadomość wpływu Rousseau na europejskie pojmowanie literatury otwiera nowe perspektywy interpretacyjne twórczości Karpińskiego. Pozwala także dostrzec w jego pisarstwie elementy kompletnego, spójnego projektu sytuującego się na granicy literatury i filozofii. Jego przełomowość polega na pierwszeństwie w polskim procesie historycznoliterackim oraz nowatorstwie postawy autobiograficznej, którą rozpatruję w odniesieniu do podstawowych koncepcji dotyczących autobiografizmu, a także nowoczesnego projektu tożsamościowego człowieka estetycznego.

The subject of this analysis is the Polish translation of the work Kappa, also known in Poland under the title In the land of Aquarius, made by Mikołaj Melanowicz. The story shows a phantasmagoric visit to the strange country (peopled by anthropomorphic creatures) and some sober observations of this disturbingly atypical land made by the main character. Due to the multitude of culturally recognizable themes referring to the history of Gulliver, the work bears remarkable signs of anti-utopia. My analysis takes on the themes of the story that are important from the point of view of this branch of philosophy and on its symbolic dimension with its immersion in the tradition of Japanese aesthetics. Basing my interpretation on the critical revision of the basic assumptions of the Japanese aesthetics school and on the close reading of the two surfaces of the work (literal and symbolic), I consider how the text functions in a philosophical way. The article focuses both on the literally aesthetic level of expression (descriptions of the presented world) as well as on the aesthetics of narration and the way of constructing the text. Przedmiotem analizy czynię polski przekład utworu W krainie wodników, znanego w Polsce również pod tytułem Kappy, dokonany przez Mikołaja Melanowicza. Historia opowiada o fantasmagorycznej wizycie w kraju antropomorficznych istot oraz o trzeźwych obserwacjach niepokojąco nietypowej krainy czynionych przez głównego bohatera. Ze względu na mnogość rozpoznawalnych kulturowo wątków nawiązujących do historii o Guliwerze, utwór nosi znamiona antyutopii. Moja analiza podejmuje wątki opowiadania istotne z punktu widzenia tej gałęzi filozofii oraz jego symboliczny wymiar z jego zanurzeniem w tradycji japońskiej estetyki. The article offers an analysis of Wojciech Kuczok’s renowned novel Gnój (Muck) from the perspective of studies on masculinity. It focuses on how hegemonic masculinity (a term popularized by the Australian researcher Raewyn Connell), represented in the novel by the protagonist’s father, functions, and on the forms of expressing a type of masculinity that the father does not accept, namely weakness, lameness and no aptitude for hypermasculinity, depicted in the protagonist. The article also analyses the narration and building the linguistic image of the world presented in the novel, the main manner of expressing masculinity by the father and the way he reinforces his hegemonic status.

Komparatystyczna analiza dwóch współczesnych wierszy poezji amerykańskiej, uruchamiająca mechanizmy analizy językowej (porównywanie różnych przekładów i tekstów oryginalnych), kulturowej (rozwijanie wątków religijnych, filozoficznych, kontrkulturowych – bitnicy, kultura gejowska USA), prowadzonej w perspektywie tanatologicznej i genderowej. Próba ukazania zakorzenienia tej poezji w tradycji liryki amerykańskiej i przedstawienia nowatorstwa tak ujmowanej problematyki. Symultaniczna interpretacja akcentuje miejsca wspólne podmiotów lirycznych oraz tropi pozornie marginalne sygnały kulturowe.
The paper is a comparative analysis of two contemporary American poems which activates mechanisms of linguistic (comparing diff erent translations and confronting them with the source texts), and cultural (elaborating on the religious, philosophical and countercultural issues concerning the Beat Generation and gay culture in the US) analyses from a thanatological and gender perspective. It is an att empt to show the affi liations between these literary works and the tradition of American poetry as well as their novelty. Simultaneous interpretation highlights loci communes of lyrical subjects and discerns seemingly marginal cultural signs.

In the paper the problem of modelling thermal properties of semiconductor devices with the use of compact models is presented. This class of models is defined and their development over the past dozens of years is described. Possibilities of modelling thermal phenomena both in discrete semiconductor devices, monolithic integrated circuits, power modules and selected electronic circuits are presented.
