Opis:
History as a field of knowledge has been in retreat for several years. Little doubt, this problem is calling for separate considerations: why is this happening? One of the reasons is rooted in "historical policy" which has created a new "censorship" and promotes "researc hers" submissive to the decision-make group. Even though history should be a teacher of life, despite its mission it is treated as a "peddlar from whom you can order any merchandise" (prof. J. Szacki, Wokół etyki polskiego humanisty, 2010) [On the ethics of a Polish humanist]. Regardless of the turbulence, the author believes that history has its place in education, provided that the past is the subject of reflection, not of faith. If we do not understand the past, often complex and difficult, we cannot get rid of its burden. Respectively, instead of evading the mistakes once made, we will be repeating them, claiming it is our attachment to the tradi tion. The historian is not to offer a "good past" as a panaceum. Conversely, his vocation is to provoke the public to study history by putting forward important and courageous questions.

Historical memory represents a kind of battery to store our national experience, be it positive or negative, that has a major impact on who we are today, and how we deal with our past. This experience derives, by way of illustration, from emigration that made Poles experience the feeling of "alienation". The author wonders what lessons stem from this experience, and whether living in a free and democratic state, we are capable of understanding and assisting the "strangers", uprooted from their ancestral land by the vortex of history, and forced to seek a new place of settlement and to "build up their life" in the more and more complicated international reality.

The coastal location of the Polish is of strategic importance for national security, and socio-political development, with all the resulting consequences. The words "removed" from the document The strategic concept of maritime safety, which in February 2017. signed President Andrzej Duda. There is no doubt that the environment of the Navy have been waiting for the manifestation of the most important activity of individuals and institutions in the country, from at least a dozen years. Today, when the "Word made flesh", the same environment has the right to expect that the declarations will follow specific organisational and investment wise marine and service prestige full participation of the Navy in the implementation of the maritime policy of the Member States. Referring to the various analyses, assessments and statements the author tries to diagnose the current state of the fleet and scratch the necessary "investments" that make it a strong link in the system of State security.

We want to see the history as a kind of "vitae magistra", so let's put the question of whether we are prepared for it? This is a fundamental issue that provokes the author of this article to pose a number of questions about the condition of our history as a field of knowledge and the object of research. The requested need to debate seems obvious, but the social reality suggests that history is more and more often a subject of the political game, a kind of race to conquer the next areas of history and to interpret them according to the criteria that have little to do with research methodology or the available sources. It is not without reason, these considerations came to include also the Polish navy which – detached from the socio – economic reality – gets bogged down in the myths of the Polish presence at sea. Only open discussion, free from political passions can lead to a better understanding of our national history, and cure us from the complexes which we tend to co-develop.

The year of 2018 sees the Centennial of independence, which should foster reflection on who we are and what we are like? I have already wondered if we are tolerant, and if not, why? I do not support the flowing stream of complacency about our uniqueness, which supposedly sets us in a position of a “spiritual” leader of the region with clear pan-European aspirations. Instead of a serious dialogue, social divisions are deepening with each passing day, and the view of “those who are not for us are against us” proves widespread. We have a difficult history behind us, but we are unable to talk about, and if we do, we draw “ammunition” from it for accusations and slanders. Why? What seemed a major, and finally the bloodless success of Poles following 1989, is today open to contempt and speculation, with a slander of treason implied in the background, a treason of who and what? These are just some of the questions that come under a wider problem of culture of our everyday life. Overwhelmed with the burden of duties, we tend to ignore it, even though its is worthwhile to notice it, because not everything can be “shouted out” in the Capital City.
Jesteśmy w roku jubileuszu stulecia odzyskania niepodległości. Rocznica ta powinna być dla nas okazją do refleksji nad tym, kim i jacy jesteśmy. Już wcześniej pytałem o to, czy jesteśmy tolerancyjni, a jeśli nie, to dlaczego. Nie podzielam płynącej szerokim strumieniem fali samozadowolenia wynikającej z przekonania o naszej wyjątkowości, która rzekomo stawia nas w roli „duchowego” przywódcy regionu, przywódcy z wyraźnymi aspiracjami ogólnoeuropejskimi. Zamiast poważnego dialogu mamy podziały społeczne pogłębiające się każdego dnia, bo przecież „kto nie z nami, ten wróg”. Mamy za sobą trudną historię, o której nie potrafimy rozmawiać, a jeśli już próbujemy, to czerpiemy z niej „amunicję” do oskarżeń i pomówień. Dlaczego? To, co wydawało się największym, bo wreszcie bezkrwawym sukcesem Polaków po 1989 roku, jest dziś przedmiotem pogardy i spekulacji, w których tle czai się pomówienie o zdradę – ale kogo i dlaczego?

Opis:
For a few decades, Polish foreign policy was determined by the geographic location and a difficult to classify complex, at one time German, at another Soviet and, at times, by the both of them simultaneously. It was particularly apparent during the interwar period and it unquestionably affected Poland’s relations with its neighbours. Throughout the interwar period, they had an “increased temperature,” with the exception of Romania, whose border was considered as peaceful. Another problem of similar importance was the domestic situation of the country which maintained clumsy policy towards many national minorities. The author has drawn attention to some aspects of Polish-Ukrainian relations and has attempted to seek answers to one crucial question: why did Polish-Ukrainian border become an area of ethnic conflict that turned out to be so dramatic for both sides. The author believes that the present situation in Ukraine and Poland’s involvement in resolving it are not the reason why the his-torical truth about the massacres of Poles from Eastern Borderlands should suffer. There are reasons to believe that both sides contributed to the surge of nationalism, but the measures which were adopted were inadequate and had all the signs of organised genocide and ethnic cleansing. Ukraine has a sovereign right to honour its heroes. Similarly, Poland has a sovereign right to judge this tragic chapter in the history of both nations and to promote its own perspective.
