    Since the end of the 19th century Polish Oblates of Mary Immaculate have been involved in pastoral work in Polish emigrant communities in Canada and in West Europe. The Polish Province of the Congregation was established by priests who knew well about the needs and about the significance of this kind of service. In 1926 Polish Oblates were able to take part in the event that was most important for the Order, one with an international import – the General Chapter in Rome. From this perspective, on the basis of sources and Chapter documents, the article describes progress made in the development of Oblate structures in Poland that were established mostly with the thought of securing missionaries for Polish emigrants. In the years that followed the climax of 1926 these aspirations were slowly realized, laying the foundations of permanent involvement of Polish Oblates in the work in West Europe.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest postaciom dwóch kapłanów, Oblatów Maryi Niepokalanej, rodzonym braciom Wilhelmowi oraz Karolowi Kubszom. Wilhelm Kubsz jest znany w polskiej historiografii jako pierwszy kapelan Dywizji im. Tadeusza Kościuszki oraz Naczelny Dziekan I Armii Wojska Polskiego, drugi z braci pozostawał zwykle poza większym zainteresowaniem historyków, choć był bardzo zaangażowany w duszpasterstwo wśród Polonii we Francji, w okresie II wojny światowej i w latach powojennych. Obaj są przedstawieni w świetle najważniejszych wydarzeń ich życia, przede wszystkim w latach 1939-1945. Uwzględniony jest głównie aspekt służby Polakom na obczyźnie, z podaniem fragmentów korespondencji prywatnej, dotąd mało studiowanej. Pośrednim celem niniejszej publikacji jest zwrócenie uwagi na wybitną postać Karola Kubsza, wyjątkową tak z racji osiągnięć praktycznych jak i wymiaru duchowości osobistej. Pełniejsza biografia o. Karola Kubsza jest w trakcie opracowywania.
    This paper is dedicated to two brothers and priests Oblates of the Immaculate Lady Wilhelm and Karol Kubsz. Wilhelm Kubsz is well-known in Polish historiography as the first chaplain of the Tadeusz Kościuszko Division and the Principal Deacon of the First Polish Army; the second brother usually remained outside the scope of historians’ interest, although he was vitally committed to pastoral care for Poles in France during the Second World War and in the post-war years. They are both presented in the light of the most important evewnts in their lifetime, especially in the years 1939-1945. This paper focuses mainlly on their service for Poles abroad, including excerpts from private correspondence that has been little studied so far. The indirect goal of the present publication is to attract attention on the prominent figure of Karol Kubsz, so exceptional due to his practical accomplishments and personal spirituality. A more complete biography of Fr. Karol Kubsz is under editorial work.

    The article sums up the achievements of the historical circle of Polish Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate during the last century. It indicates the foundations of the Oblate historiography, which include the most important archival collections both in Poland and abroad, as well as studies by the most important Polish Oblate historians. Both achievements of historians-professionals and historians-amateurs are discussed. Several thematic aspects of the Oblate historiography are pointed to: basic syntheses, hagiographic and biographic works, studies on the work of Polish Oblates abroad. Also the main directions of further studies and their significance for the Church historiography in Poland are briefly discussed.

    Terytorium diecezji siedleckiej było w drugiej połowie XIX w. świadkiem surowych prześladowań religijnych. Rząd carski konfiskował katolickie kościoły i zmuszał unitów do wyrzekania się unii z biskupem Rzymu i przechodzenia na prawosławie. Siedemnastowieczny wizerunek Matki Bożej Kodeńskiej został wywieziony z Kodnia do sanktuarium jasnogórskiego. Dopiero odzyskanie przez Polskę niepodległości w 1918 r. pozwoliło rozpocząć proces przywracania tradycyjnych kościelnych struktur. W artykule ukazane jest zaangażowanie bpa sieleckiego Henryka Przeździeckiego w sprowadzenie obrazu Matki Bożej Kodeńskiej z powrotem do Kodnia oraz powierzenie parafii i sanktuarium w Kodniu Misjonarzom Oblatom Maryi Niepokalanej. Początki duszpasterstwa oblatów nie wykluczały zaangażowania w odtwarzanie struktur Kościoła unickiego.
    The territory of the diocese of Siedlce has witnessed severe religious persecution in the second part of the 19th century. The Russian authorities confiscated Catholic churches and violently forced the eastern-rite Catholics to forsake the union with the bishop of Rome and to join the Orthodox Church. A famous 17th-century image of Our Lady of Kodeń was removed from the church and transported to another Marian shrine in the southern Poland. Only the Polish independence in 1918 allowed the process of rebuilding the traditional religious structures to begin. The article shows the involvement of the bishop of Siedlce in restoring the image of Our Lady of Kodeń to its original location and the beginning of pastoral ministry of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at the service of the Marian shrine and parish in Kodeń, including the attempts to restore the structures of the eastern-rite Catholic Church.
