    The aim of this paper is to study and compare the competitiveness of the new EU member states in international trade in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). The first part of the paper presents a definition of KIBS trade, indicators to measure competitiveness in international service trade, and a short review of research in this field. The second part of the study is empirical. First the author carries out an overall analysis of transactions on KIBS trade in the countries involved. Then the competitiveness of the new EU member states in KIBS export is studied (in total KIBS and in each category of KIBS). International competitiveness is measured by export performance, trade balance and the RCA index. The author compares the competitiveness in KIBS exports between the analyzed countries, and tries to answer the question whether it could have been positively affected by their accession to the EU. The paper uses the WTO database. The analyzed period covers the years 2000–2013, because data on particular categories of ‘Other business services’ have been available only since 2000. The analysis refers to the 12 countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007.

    The aim of this article is to study and compare the importance of intermediate demand for KIBS and to examine the relation between KIBS intensity and innovativeness in the EU countries. The study refers to all the EU countries, which gives an opportunity of comparative analysis between countries, in particular between EU-15 and EU-12. The data are derived from the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) and the European Innovation Scoreboard. The analyzed period covers the years 2000–2014 (with respect to KIBS intensity), and 2002–2014 (with respect to innovativeness), which is determined by the availability of relevant data. The empirical study shows that among the EU-15 countries only those with high income can be characterized by a higher level of KIBS intensity and innovativeness than the EU-12 countries. The statistical research shows that there is a positive, statistically signifi cant correlation between KIBS intensity in the economy and its innovativeness, measured by the Summary Innovation Index.

    The aim of this article is to examine the innovation performance of manufacturing companies across the European Union and their use of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) as measured by the number of patent applications. Methodology of this research concentrates on the use of comparative analysis and the rank correlation. The study is based on data from the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) and Eurostat. It covers EU countries in the 1995–2012 period. The study results show that manufacturing companies in EU15 countries were more intensive and more innovative in terms of KIBS in the study period than manufacturing companies in EU12 countries. There is a positive, statistically significant correlation between KIBS intensity in both the broad and narrow sense and the number of patent applications filed by manufacturing companies. A stronger correlation occurred with respect to KIBS in the narrow sense and in more technologically advanced sectors. The findings of the study have potential implications for innovation policy, which is currently focused on supporting R&D activities. The study shows that, in order to strengthen the innovativeness of manufacturing companies, it is necessary to support not only R&D activities but also the development of KIBS companies and the innovation systems they help create.
    Celem artykułu jest zbadanie poziomu wykorzystania KIBS (knowledge-intensive business services) i efektów działalności innowacyjnej, mierzonej za pomocą liczby zgłoszeń patentowych, w przedsiębiorstwach z działów przetwórczych. W badaniu wykorzystano analizę porównawczą oraz korelację rang. Wykorzystano dane z bazy WIOD (World Input-Output Database) i Eurostatu. Badaniem objęto przedsiębiorstwa z krajów UE w latach 1995–2012. Wykazano, że kraje UE-15 charakteryzowały się większym poziomem wykorzystania KIBS i innowacyjności niż kraje UE-12. Istnieje dodatnia, statystycznie istotna zależność między wydatkami na zakup KIBS, zarówno definiowanymi szeroko, jak i wąsko, a liczbą zgłoszeń patentowych w firmach przetwórczych. Silniejsza zależność występowała w przypadku wydatków na KIBS definiowane wąsko, a ponadto w działach bardziej zaawansowanych technologicznie. Wyniki te mają potencjalne implikacje dla polityki innowacyjnej, która obecnie skoncentrowana jest na wspieraniu działalności B+R. Badanie wykazało, że aby wzmocnić innowacyjność przedsiębiorstw przetwórczych wskazane jest również wsparcie dla rozwoju przedsiębiorstw świadczących KIBS oraz systemów innowacji z ich udziałem.

    The aim of this paper is to show that the main driving force behind the dynamic development of international service trade in recent years was an increasing role of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) in this trade. The first part of the paper focus on indicating main factors that have contributed to rapid growth of KIBS in service trade, defining KIBS trade and presenting a short review of related research. The second part of the study is empirical. The author shows an increasing role of KIBS in world service exports, as well as studies the situation in different groups of countries. The analysis refers to the exports of total KIBS and of each KIBS categories. The paper uses UNCTAD database. The analyzed period usually covers the years 2000-2013, because data on individual components of Other services have been available since 2000.
    Celem pracy jest pokazanie, iż główną siłą napędową dynamicznego rozwoju międzynarodowego handlu usługami w ostatnich latach był wzrastający udział usług biznesowych opartych na wiedzy (KIBS) w tej wymianie. Pierwsza część pracy koncentruje się na wskazaniu czynników, które przyczyniły się do wzrostu znaczenie KIBS w wymianie międzynarodowej, zdefiniowaniu handlu KIBS oraz przeglądzie dotychczasowych badań w tym obszarze. Druga część pracy ma charakter empiryczny. Autorka pokazuje wzrastającą rolę KIBS w światowym eksporcie usług, jak również analizuje sytuację w poszczególnych grupach krajów. Analiza odnosi się do eksportu KIBS ogółem oraz poszczególnych kategorii KIBS. W pracy wykorzystano dane z UNCTAD. Analizowany okres to na ogół lata 2000- -2013, ponieważ od 2000 roku dostępne są dane na temat handlu w poszczególnych kategoriach Pozostałych usług.
