    The above article presents the concepts of holiness developed in the patristic period by the Church Fathers and early Christian writers. Ancient Christianity has not worked out one specific model of holiness. Attempts of this kind of unification in the Western Church did not appear until the time of the scholastic theology and medieval legal theology of canonization. For patristic theology only God is holy in the full and the only sense, the holiness of a man and the things is a derivative of a relationship to this fundamental source of holiness. The article consists of two major parts: in the first – Indications of holiness – different meanings of holiness and realities referred as holy by early Christian writers have been presented. In the second part – The ways to holiness – five, the most common in the writings of the Church Fathers, concepts of holiness and sanctification of man were presented, among which we can distinguish: a deification of man, man’s sanctification in the Holy Spirit, the sanctification of man in grace, the perfection and holiness of man as a model of life promoted by the Church. To understand modern understanding of holiness and to present as a whole the issue of holiness one must consult the Tradition of the Church in the first centuries, and the writers who not only wrote about holiness, but in many cases they have become saints.

    W dotychczasowej literaturze dotyczącej mariologii patrystycznej, stosunkowo mało miejsca poświęcano badaniom nad przepowiadaniem pastoralnym Ojców Kościoła, co było skutkiem mniejszej liczby takich wypowiedzi Ojców Kościoła. Pisarze wczesnochrześcijańscy bowiem, w okresie formowania doktryny, także tej w zakresie mariologii, w obliczu walki z herezjami, więcej uwagi poświęcali rozstrzygnięciom dogmatycznym niż kwestiom pastoralnym. W niniejszym zatem artykule opierając się na wybranych, reprezentatywnych dziełach autorów wczesnochrześcijańskich, związanych z codziennym życiem i troską duszpasterską, został ukazany obraz Maryi, jaki autorzy ci prezentują do naśladowania swym wiernym. Teksty Orygenesa, Hieronima, Cyryla Jerozolimskiego, Jana Damasceńskiego, Zenona z Werony, Piotra Chryzologa, Chromacjusza z Akwilei pozwalają zobaczyć, że oprócz wymiaru dogmatycznego ich wypowiedzi, są w nich również obecne ekshortacje duszpasterskie, z których najważniejsza jest jedna – życie wiarą na wzór Maryi.
    In the existing literature on patristic Mariology, relatively little research has been done on the pastoral preaching of the Fathers of the Church due to the smaller number of such statements contained in their works. The early Christian writers, in the period of the formation of doctrine, including that of Mariology, in the face of the struggle against heresies, paid more attention to dogmatic solutions than to pastoral issues. In this paper, therefore, the image of Mary that these authors present for the imitation of the faithful is presented on the basis of selected representative works of early Christian authors related to everyday life and pastoral concerns. The texts of Origen, Jerome, Cyril of Jerusalem, John of Damascus, Zeno of Verona, Peter Chrysologus, Chromatius of Aquileia, allow us to see that in addition to the dogmatic dimension of their works there are also in them pastoral exhortations, of which the most important is one – to lead daily life of faith in imitation of Mary.

    Among the famous people related to Warmia one of the most prominent is undoubtedly the bishop of Warmia, Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius, a famous diplomat, humanist, lawyer, poet, illuminator scientific life in Warmia, but also a theologian and defender of the Catholic faith. His theological views and his defending of the faith against the reformers are included in a number of his writings, but the greatest influence and fame had his work Confessio catholicae fidei Christiana (Christian profession of the Catholic faith). It was written as an extension of a creed created on request of participants of the Council in Piotrków (1551), who turned to Hosius with request to write a short statement of the most important truths of the Catholic faith. In his work Hosius many times repeatedly referred to the argument from Tradition and he used the writings of the early Christian writers. The article is an attempt to explore how Hosius, arguing with Protestants, uses patristic argument and how he uses the writings of early Christian writers. The article presents as well the idea of the reception of the Fathers of the Church in the most important work of Hosius.
