Opis:
1. Motivation. Let J₀(N) denote the Jacobian of the modular curve X₀(N) parametrizing pairs of N-isogenous elliptic curves. The simple factors of J₀(N) have real multiplication, that is to say that the endomorphism ring of a simple factor A contains an order in a totally real number field of degree dim A. We shall sometimes abbreviate "real multiplication" to "RM" and say that A has maximal RM by the totally real field F if A has an action of the full ring of integers of F. We say that a curve C has RM (or maximal RM) by F when the Jacobian Jac(C) does.
Let us call an abelian variety modular if it is isogenous to a simple factor of J₀(N) for some N. Save for some technical restrictions, it is now known that all elliptic curves (that is, RM abelian varieties of dimension 1) are modular. It is also conjectured that all RM abelian varieties are modular [14]. In a recent paper, Taylor and Shepherd-Barron [15] have shown that many abelian surfaces with maximal real multiplication by ℚ(√5) are modular. (Again, there are some technical conditions to be met.)
It is well known that principally polarized abelian surfaces are either Jacobians, or products. Thus principally polarized abelian surfaces with maximal RM are amenable to a fairly explicit description, if one can determine which curves give these surfaces as Jacobians. Our aim, then, is to attempt to give a description of those curves of genus 2 with maximal RM by ℚ(√5) both in terms of their moduli and by giving equations for the curves. (We also note that it follows from other work of ours [17, Chapter 4] that an abelian surface with RM is almost always isogenous over the ground field to a principally polarized abelian surface with maximal RM.)

Opis:
Previous work has indicated that two types (A and B) of binding sites for hexokinase exist, but in different proportions, on brain mitochondria from various species. Hexokinase is readily solubilized from Type A sites by glucose 6-phosphate (Glc-6-P), while hexokinase bound to Type B sites remains bound even in the presence of Glc-6-P. Type A:Type B ratios are approximately 90:10, 60:40, 40:60, and 20:80 for brain mitochondria from rat, rabbit, bovine and human brain, respectively. The present study has indicated that MgCl2-dependent partitioning of mitochondrially bound hexokinase into a hydrophobic (Triton X-114) phase is generally correlated with the proportion of Type B sites. This partitioning behavior is sensitive to phospholipase C, implying that the factor(s) responsible for conferring hydrophobic character is(are) phospholipid(s). Substantial differences were also seen in the resistance of hexokinase, bound to brain mitochondria from various species, to solubilization by Triton X-100, Triton X-114, or digitonin. This resistance increased with proportion of Type B sites. Enrichment of bovine brain mitochondria in acidic phospholipids (phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylinositol), but not phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylethanolamine, substantially increased solubilization of the enzyme after incubation at 37°C. Collectively, the results imply that the Type A and Type B sites are located in membrane domains of different lipid composition, the Type A sites being in domains enriched in acidic phospholipids which lead to greater susceptibility to solubilisation by Glc-6-P.

Opis:
This paper discusses the derivation of a set of dynamic load factors for calculation of walking response on the basis of measurements made during a biomechanics research carried out with young adults. Firstly, a quite large number of experimental data on single footstep force were collected. The single footstep forces were then superimposed to generate the force time history for a continuous walk. This was followed by the transformation of the resultant force to the frequency domain from which the dynamic load factors for the first ten harmonics of a pacing rate can be extracted. A statistical analysis was employed on the dynamic load factors to acquire their design values in terms of the 90-th or 95-th percentile. The waking force function recommended by various design guides and that developed in the paper were then used in a comprehensive finite element model to predict the vibration level of a building floor. Current design guides on floor vibration normally suggest using four harmonics in the walking force whereas load factors for ten harmonics were developed in this paper. The acceleration response of the floor was found to increase by 5-33% when walking harmonics beyond the fourth harmonic were considered. The inclusion of higher harmonics would therefore lead to a more conservative estimation of the floor response.
