Opis:
A collection of ammonites of the genus Amoeboceras located carefully in the section of Nordvik Peninsula in northern Siberia has enabled recognition of the standard Boreal ammonite zones of the Upper Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian. The recognition of the standard Amoeboceras zones, well known in NW Europe and the Barents Sea area, in northern Siberia indicates the uniform character of the Late Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian ammonite faunas across the whole Boreal Province. Some comments on the occurrence of Boreal oppeliids of the genus Suboxydiscites in the studied section are also given.

Opis:
Detailed study of all the ammonite collections gathered by the authors in the Staffin Bay sections has resulted in minor changes in the distribution of ammonite taxa, and slight modification of the position of the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. Most significant is the discovery of Pictonia (Triozites) cf. seminudata which results in the placing of the stage boundary 0.16 m below the level formerly proposed. This study discusses the evolution of the Subboreal family Aulacostephanidae, and the Boreal family Cardioceratidae, indicating changes in the patterns of individual development in the evolution of both families in terms of heterochrony. The Oxfordian/ Kimmeridgian boundary interval shows major morphological changes in both ammonite families which were released from phylogenetic constraints by heterochrony, closely related to changes in environmental conditions.

Opis:
The Veliky Kamenets section in the eastern part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt in the Ukrainian Carpathians shows a well exposed, 83 m thick succession composed of Jurassic and lowermost Cretaceous (Berriasian) deposits. The terrigenous part of the section includes: gravels with a sandy matrix (unit 1A), massive grey-green sandstones (unit 1B) and shales with intercalations of siltstones/sandstones and oyster/gastropod lumachelles (unit 2). Organic-walled dinoflagellates document the Toarcian-Aalenian age of the siliciclastic deposits of unit 2. The carbonate part of the succession embraces: stromatactis mud-mounds interfingering with crinoidal limestones (unit 3A), lower nodular limestones (unit 3B), cherty limestones (unit 3C), upper nodular limestones (unit 3D), pink pelitic limestones (unit 3E), limestones with a volcanogenic bed (unit 5) and limestone breccia limestones (unit 6). This succession has yielded abundant ammonites from the Bathonian, Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian (with a stratigraphical hiatus covering the Callovian and Lower Oxfordian), as well as calcareous dinoflagellates (from the Upper Oxfordian towards the top of the succession), and calpionellids (in the Tithonian and Berriasian). Detailed stratigraphical study of the succession based both on ammonites and microfossils has resulted in the recognition of biostratigraphical units and their correlation with the chronostratigraphical scale. The microfacies recognized in the pelagic part of the succession include: the “filament” (Bositra) microfacies (Bathonian), the planktonic foraminifer microfacies (Oxfordian), the Saccocoma microfacies (Kimmeridgian to Upper Tithonian), and the calpionellid microfacies (Upper Tithonian–Berriasian). The volcanogenic rocks (lava flows and volcanic ash) appear in the topmost part of the succession (units 4 to 6) and this volcanic event is very precisely located in the Elliptica-Simplex chrons of the Middle and Late Berriasian.

The Czertezik Succession has been closely re-examined in its most classical sections of the Pieniny Klippen Belt (Western Carpathians) in Poland and eastern Slovakia. The study revealed the presence of the "lower nodular limestones" (Niedzica Limestone Formation), and resulted in discovery of Early Bajocian ammonite fauna in grey crinoidal limestones of the Smolegowa Limestone Formation/Flaki Limestone Formation, and the latest Bajocian to Early Bathonian ammonite fauna in the Niedzica Limestone Formation. These new data proved closer similarity between the Czertezik Succession and the Niedzica Succession than between the Czertezik Succession and the Czorsztyn Succession as it was suggested up to now. On the other hand, the Czertezik Succession represents deeper palaeogeographical position within the Pieniny Klippen Basin than the Niedzica Succession and it has been deposited near the Branisko/Kysuca Succession.

Opis:
The Mikhalenino section on the Russian Platform has yielded numerous ammonites from the Middle and Upper Oxfordian and lowermost Kimmeridgian, collected bed by bed. The ammonites belong mostly to the Boreal family Cardioceratidae, but also to the Subboreal family Aulacostephanidae; additionally at some levels there were collected various Submediterranean ammonites (Perisphinctidae, Oppeliidae and Aspidoceratidae). The co-occurrence of ammonites representative of different faunal provinces makes possible recognition of the Boreal, Subboreal, and partly also Submediterranean standard zonations. In consequence, it is possible to make a close correlation between these zonal schemes. The Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary at the Pseudocordata/Baylei zonal boundary of the Subboreal zonal scheme corresponds precisely to the Rosenkrantzi/Bauhini zonal boundary. This boundary of the stages defined well faunistically in the Flodigarry section (Isle of Skye, Scotland) and proposed as a candidate for the uniform Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary, can be also recognized in the Russian section studied. The boundary can be traced in the Mikhalenino section using the same criteria as used at Staffin: the appearance of the first representatives of Pictonia [M]–Prorasenia [m] (Subboreal), and the first appearance of Amoeboceras (Plasmatites) (Boreal). This indicates the large correlation potential of the boundary defined in this way. The research on the Mikhalenino section has provided the new palaeontological findings described in this study. These include the first discovery in the territory of the Russian Platform of ammonites of the genera/subgenera Decipia, Vineta and Pomerania (Pachypictonia). Two new species: Decipia (?) kostromensis sp. nov., and Pictonia mesezhnikovi n. sp. are described.

The Tithonian ammonite succession at the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry, central Poland shows the presence of Subboreal ammonites of both NE European (“Volgian”) and NW European (“Bolonian–Portlandian”) affinity, making possible the correlation between the relevant ammonite subdivisions. The former are represented by Zaraiskites – Z. regularis Kutek and Z. zarajskensis (Michalski) as well as an early form of Virgatites – V. gerassimovi Mitta which enable the recognition of the upper part of the Scythicus Zone (the Zaraj¬skensis Subzone) and the lower part of the Virgatus Zone (the Gerassimovi Subzone) of the “Middle Volgian”. The latter are represented by Virgatopavlovia, which enables the correlation with the Fittoni Zone of the uppermost “Bolonian”, and by still younger assemblage of small-sized virgatitids – such as V. pusillus (Michalski), showing similarity to Progalbanites albani (Arkell) of the Albani Zone of the lowermost “Portlandian”. The new species established include: Zaraiskites lewinskii sp. nov. which represents a new member of the virgatitid lineage linking an older Z. pommerania (Arkell) with younger small-sized Virgatites, as well as two species of the genus Virgatopavlovia – V. janeki sp. nov. and V. dembowskae sp. nov. The appearance of ammonites of NW and NE European affinity in central Poland resulted from the opening of the new sea routes possibly related with tectonic activity in northern European areas at the transition from Early to Late Tithonian.

Opis:
The ammonite succession in the stratigraphical interval from the Bifurcatus Zone, through the Hypselum Zone, up to the lower part of the Bimammatum Zone corresponding to a large part of the Submediterranean Upper Oxfordian is studied in several sections of the Polish Jura in central Poland. The sections have yielded numerous ammonites of Submediterranean–Mediterranean affinity, but also, some of Boreal and Subboreal character. The co-occurrence of ammonites of different bioprovinces makes possible the correlation between the different zonal schemes – especially between the Subboreal/Boreal zonations and the Submediterranean/Mediterranean zonation. The correlation shows that the boundary of the Pseudocordata and Baylei zones (Subboreal) and its equivalent – the boundary of the Rosenkrantzi and Bauhini zones (Boreal), currently proposed as the primary standard of the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian boundary within its GSSP at Staffin Bay (Isle of Skye, Scotland), runs in the Submediterranean/Mediterranean Upper Oxfordian near the base of the Bimammatum Zone. This discovery removes the main obstacle against the formal recognition of the Staffin Bay section as representing the uniform base of the Kimmeridgian Stage in the World and its GSSP. The ammonite taxa recognized are commented on and/or described, and suggestions on their taxonomical and phylogenetical relations are given in the palaeontological part of the study. A new taxon is established: Microbiplices anglicus vieluniensis subsp. nov.

Opis:
An extensive collection of ammonites made bed by bed from sections in the Submediterranean Upper Oxfordian of the Wieluń Upland, Central Poland, is described and used as a basis for a chronostratigraphical interpretation of the deposits. The ammonites are mostly of Submediterranean character and enable the recognition of the Bimammatum Zone, including the Bimammatum and Hauffianum subzones, as well as the lowermost Planula Zone distinguished here as a new biostratigraphical horizon – the matyjai horizon – based on the occurrence of Subnebrodites matyjai Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. The Submediterranean ammonites are mostly oppeliids with Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) [M] – Glochiceras (Lingulaticeras) [m] the most numerous, as well as Taramelliceras (Richeiceras) and Taramelliceras (Metahaploceras) [M] – Glochiceras (Coryceras) [m]. The profusion of ammonites of these two groups in the stratigraphical interval studied provides new information on their evolution, and two new oppeliid species, Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) zelcense Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. and Glochiceras (Lingulaticeras) bobrownikiense Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov., are described here. Subboreal and Boreal ammonites are not common in these sections, but are nevertheless important for correlation. Subboreal ammonites of the family Aulacostephanidae are represented by the genus Vineta [M], including its newly recognized microconchiate counterpart, Vineta [m], and a newly established genus Vielunia [M] Wierzbowski et Głowniak gen. nov., with type species Vielunia dzalosinensis Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. The latter genus includes ammonites previously referred in the area of study to Ringsteadia, and with a microconchiate counterpart assigned to Prorasenia [m]. The Boreal ammonites comprise late cardioceratids assigned to Amoeboceras (Plasmatites). These ammonites indicate that the deposits in question from the Submediterranean Bimammatum Zone up to the Planula Zone correlate with the Subboreal and Boreal lowermost Kimmeridgian (Baylei Zone, and Bauhini Zone, respectively).

The Lower Jurassic and the lower part of the Middle Jurassic deposits corresponding to the Sołtysia Marlstone Formation of the Lower Subtatric (Krížna) nappe in the Kopy Sołtysie mountain range of the High Tatra Mts and the Płaczliwa Skała (= Ždziarska Vidla) mountain of the Belianske Tatra Mts in the eastern part of the Tatra Mts in Poland and Slovakia are described. The work concentrates both on their lithological and facies development as well as their ammonite faunal content and their chronostratigraphy. These are basinal deposits which show the dominant facies of the fleckenkalk-fleckenmergel type and reveal the succession of several palaeontological microfacies types from the spiculite microfacies (Sinemurian–Lower Pliensbachian, but locally also in the Bajocian), up to the radiolarian microfacies (Upper Pliensbachian and Toarcian, Bajocian–Bathonian), and locally the Bositra (filament) microfacies (Bajocian–Bathonian). In addition, there appear intercalations of detrital deposits – both bioclastic limestones and breccias – formed by downslope transport from elevated areas (junction of the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian, Upper Toarcian, and Bajocian). The uppermost Toarcian – lowermost Bajocian interval is represented by marly-shaly deposits with a marked admixture of siliciclastic material. The deposits are correlated with the coeval deposits of the Lower Subtatric nappe of the western part of the Tatra Mts (the Bobrowiec unit), as well as with the autochthonous-parachthonous Hightatric units, but also with those of the Czorsztyn and Niedzica successions of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, in Poland. The character of the deposits in the sequences, and their biostratigraphical analysis, show that sedimentation during the Early Jurassic, and up to the Late Bajocian, was controlled by rifting phases which were active at the junction of the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian (Zliechov Phase), during the Late Pliensbachian and Toarcian (Devín Phase), and during the Bajocian (Krasín Phase). The onset of pelagic sedimentation overlying the rift strata took place during the latest Bajocian. Selected ammonite taxa are illustrated and discussed.

Opis:
The Jurassic deposits which crop out in the quarries at Priborzhavske, Perechin and Novoselitsa in the Transcarpathian Ukraine comprise fairly similar successions, allowing their interpretation as corresponding to a single palaeogeographic zone in the Pieniny Klippen Basin. To the same zone belong also deposits from Beňatina quarry in eastern Slovakia. The following main stratigraphic units may be recognized: terrigenous and fleckenkalk-fleckenmergel deposits (Sinemurian-Pliensbachian), highly diversified and condensed deposits (uppermost Pliensbachian-Aalenian), crinoidal limestones (Bajocian, with a stratigraphical gap covering a lower part of the Lower Bajocian), nodular limestones of ammonitico-rosso type (uppermost Bajocian to Oxfordian with a possible gap covering the Callovian and Lower Oxfordian), well bedded micritic limestones (Kimmeridgian to Upper Tithonian), and bedded limestones with cherts of the maiolica type (from the uppermost Tithonian). Two rifting phases, well developed in the successions, took place: (1) Devín phase during latest Pliensbachian-Toarcian-and at least earliest Aalenian, and (2) Krasín phase during the Bajocian. The onset of pelagic deposits overlying the rift strata took place during the latest Bajocian, and corresponds well with the general subsidence and development of a more uniform facies pattern during the post-rifting time as everywhere in the Pieniny Klippen Basin. Selected ammonite taxa of the Lower and lower part of the Middle Jurassic are illustrated and discussed.

This systematic account contains descriptions of ammonite species of the superfamily Perisphinctoidea from the collection of the Physiographic Commission of the 19th century Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kraków. The emphasis is on the description of 11 species introduced by Siemiradzki (1891), e.g. Subdiscosphinctes kreutzi, S. mindowe, S. jelskii, S. dunikowskii, S. ? cracoviensis, S. ? dybowskii, Perisphinctes (Perisphinctes) vajdelota, Perisphinctes (Dichotomosphinctes) crotalinus, P. (Dichotomoceras) alpinus, and Perisphinctes damesi recognised to be nomen dubium, as well as a single species from the Bimammatum Zone – Ringsteadia teisseyrei. Most of the species mentioned are re-described and illustrated for the first time in this paper. In addition, the descriptions of 18 nominal species as well as another 32 species left in open nomenclature, are provided. The species are assigned to 8 genera (Subdiscosphinctes, Perisphinctes, Neumannia, Passendorferia, Idoceras, Orthosphinctes and Ringsteadia) in 3 families (Perisphinctidae, Ataxioceratidae and Aulacostephanidae). In the family Perisphinctidae two new informal species groups have been distinguished: Perisphinctes (Dichotomosphinctes) elisabethae group and the Subdiscosphinctes ? dybowskii group. The Subdiscosphinctes ? cracoviensis group as distinguished by Brochwicz-Lewiski, has been re-described and some new forms included in it. The species indicate the Plicatilis and Transversarium zones of the Middle Oxfordian, and the Bifurcatus, Bimammatum and Planula zones hitherto as a whole assigned to the Submediterranean Upper Oxfordian, but in fact correlating with the Upper Oxfordian (Bifurcatus Zone and the lower part of the Bimammatum Zone) and the lowermost Kimmeridgian (upper part of the Bimammatum Zone and Planula Zone) of the Subboreal primary standard for the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. The erroneous opinion presented by Siemiradzki (1891) concerning the alleged discordant occurrence of Kimmeridgian deposits of the so called Oppelia tenuilobata Zone in the area studied has been corrected and explained. The paper is provided with some useful species inexes.

Opis:
New data are presented in relation to the worldwide definition of the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary, i.e. the base of the Kimmeridgian Stage. This data, mostly acquired in the past decade, supports the 2006 proposal to make the uniform boundary of the stages in the Flodigarry section at Staffin Bay on the Isle of Skye, northern Scotland. This boundary is based on the Subboreal-Boreal ammonite successions, and it is distinguished by the Pictonia flodigarriensis horizon at the base of the Subboreal Baylei Zone, and which corresponds precisely to the base of the Boreal Bauhini Zone. The boundary lies in the 0.16 m interval (1.24–1.08 m) below bed 36 in sections F6 at Flodigarry and it is thus proposed as the GSSP for the Oxfordian/ Kimmeridgian boundary. This boundary is recognized also by other stratigraphical data – palaeontological, geochemical and palaeomagnetic (including its well documented position close to the boundary between magnetozones F3n, and F3r which is placed in the 0.20 m interval – 1.28 m to 1.48 m below bed 36 – the latter corresponding to marine magnetic anomaly M26r). The boundary is clearly recognizable also in other sections of the Subboreal and Boreal areas discussed in the study, including southern England, Pomerania and the Peri-Baltic Syneclise, Russian Platform, Northern Central Siberia, Franz-Josef Land, Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea. It can be recognized also in the Submediterranean-Mediterranean areas of Europe and Asia where it correlates with the boundary between the Hypselum and the Bimmamatum ammonite zones. The changes in ammonite faunas at the boundary of these ammonite zones – mostly of ammonites of the families Aspidoceratidae and Oppeliidae – also enables the recognition of the boundary in the Tethyan and Indo-Pacific areas – such as the central part of the Americas (Cuba, Mexico), southern America, and southern parts of Asia. The climatic and environmental changes near to the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary discussed in the study relate mostly to the European areas. They show that very unstable environments at the end of the Oxfordian were subsequently replaced by more stable conditions representing a generally warming trend during the earliest Kimmeridgian. The definition of the boundary between the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian as given in this study results in its wide correlation potential and means that it can be recognized in the different marine successions of the World.

Opis:
The Early Kimmeridgian of the Wieluń Upland and adjoining regions, after the decline of sedimentation of the deep-neritic sponge megafacies (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.) and associated limestones and marls with poor benthic fauna (Pilica Fm.) during the Planula Chron, showed the subsequent development of moderately shallow-water biostromal chalky limestones with siliceous sponges and corals, replaced laterally by micritic limestones and marls (Prusicko Fm.) during the Platynota Chron and the earliest Hypse¬locyclum Chron. Towards the north and south shallow-marine carbonate platforms occurred (represented by deposits of the “oolitic” fm.), whereas towards the north-west and west deeper marine facies, represented initially by limestones with siliceous sponges (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.), and later during the Hypselocyclum Chron by bedded limestones and marls with ammonites (Burzenin Fm.) were deposited. This palaeogeographic pattern was controlled by the synsedimentary tectonics. The detailed biostratigraphical classification of the deposits studied from the Platynota to the Divisum zones, and their lithological character, enable the recognition of the primary sedimentary cyclicity by comparison with the well dated short eccentricity cycles in the coeval succession of south-eastern France. The two appendixes enclosed give the characteristics of: (1) the characteristics of the ammonite faunas especially of the families Ataxiocerati¬dae and Aulacostephanidae (where two new species are established – Balticeras samsonowiczi sp. nov., and Rasenioides glazeki sp. nov.); (2) the newly established lithostratigraphical units: the Prusicko Fm., and the Burzenin Fm., and the smaller rank units (members, beds) recognized therein.

Opis:
According to the present authors the decline of the Bajocian crinoidal limestone sedimentation in the Pieniny Klippen Basin corresponded to a general subsidence of the Czorsztyn Ridge which promoted the appearance of nodular limestones of the pelagic Ammonitico Rosso facies (Czorsztyn Limestone Fm., Niedzica Limestone Fm.). As proved by ammonite faunas recognized in the Czorsztyn, Niedzica and Czertezik successions, this replacement of the facies (sometimes related with hiatus) took place during the latest Bajocian. A different interpretation of stratigraphy of the crinoidal limestones is given by Birkenmajer (1977, 2007) who postulates a wider stratigraphical range of these deposits, in the Czertezik Succession, but also in the Czorsztyn Succession, from the Bajocian up to base or even end of the Callovian. According to this author the crinoidal limestones span in these two successions a large stratigraphical interval of the Middle Jurassic being partly a lateral equivalent of the nodular limestones of the Niedzica Limestone Fm. of the Niedzica Succession. The present authors investigations, based on new findings of ammonites (parkinsoniids—Parkinsonia (Parkinsonia) parkinsoni (Sow.), Parkinsonia cf. bomfordi Arkell), in the typical area of occurrence of the Czertezik Succession, indicate the presence of the uppermost Bajocian–lowermost Bathonian red nodular limestones of the Niedzica Limestone Formation, and along with older ammonite datings from the Czorsztyn Succession prove that the onset of sedimentation of the nodular limestones was almost coeval in the Czertezik Succession, the Czorsztyn Succession and the Niedzica Succession. Additionally, the ammonite fauna indicates that sedimentation of the crinoidal limestones in the Czertezik Succession took place during the Bajocian, similarly as in other successions of the Pieniny Klippen Belt. These new findings show that differences between the Czertezik Succession, and other successions of the Pieniny Klippen Belt are much smaller than hitherto proposed (Birkenmajer, 1959), and confirm an earlier interpretation of the present authors (Wierzbowski et al., 2004).
