    The presented paper considers the problem of misunderstanding between two people on the ancient stage. The author chose two dramatical interrelations in Agamemnon by Aeschylus. Each of these dialogues presents different incongruity between question or order and the response, which can be caused from one side in the pride, power, and fear, and suffering or weakness from the other. We should undertake also some details concerning the importance of silence during the dramatic conversation, sometimes neglected by the scholars. The participant (reader or spectator) of such passages may feel uncertain, if this is a sophisticated play of the author with him, or even a vestige of his interest in human psychology.

    Jedna z propozycji, jak regulować stosunki między przedstawicielami odmiennych zbiorowości w sposób nadający równy status ich odmienności, autentycznie nie naruszający ich godności oraz umożliwiający realizację ich podmiotowości wywodzi się z nurtu myślowego i ideologicznego zwanego demokracją deliberatywną. Nurt ten zyskał znaczną popularność w ostatnim dwudziestoleciu, służąc jako inspiracja wielu analiz teoretycznych i filozoficznych (np. Rehg 1999; Flynn 2003; Galston 1999) oraz interdyscyplinarnych prac empirycznych realizowanych na gruncie nauk politycznych (np. Bachtiger i in. 2005), socjologii (np. Gastil, Deess, Weiser 2002), językoznawstwa (np. Holzinger 2004), a także psychologii (np. Mendelberg, Karpowitz 2007; Reykowski 2007; Wesołowska 2010). Jedną z przyczyn popularności idei demokracji deliberatywnej jest to, że zawiera ona propozycję ulepszenia funkcjonowania obecnych systemów demokratycznych, między innymi pod względem konstruktywnego rozwiązywania kontrowersji społecznych oraz regulacji stosunków między odmiennymi zbiorowościami. Udoskonalenie systemu instytucji politycznych miałoby polegać na rozpowszechnianiu procedury zwanej debatą deliberatywną jako sposobu poszukiwania porozumienia na rożnych szczeblach podejmowania decyzji. Mówiąc najogólniej, debata deliberatywna jest grupowym procesem poszukiwania porozumienia poprzez dyskusję, w której jednostki uczestniczą na zasadach równego statusu, wzajemnego poszanowania i wolności od wszelkich przymusów zewnętrznych. Idealną deliberację (w odróżnieniu od większości dyskusji grupowych, które możemy obserwować na co dzień) cechuje współpraca między stronami, racjonalna i merytoryczna argumentacja, otwarte przedstawianie przez strony stanowisk wraz z ich uzasadnieniami, poszukiwanie tego, co łączy, a nie dzieli dyskutantów oraz współdziałanie przy wypracowywaniu końcowego rozwiązania zaspokajającego podmiotowe potrzeby, a jednocześnie korzystnego dla dobra ogółu. Czy implementacja i rozpowszechnianie debat deliberatywnych w powyższym rozumieniu byłyby możliwe w stosunkowo młodej polskiej demokracji? Czy debaty deliberatywne mogłyby stać się procedurą poszukiwania porozumienia między przedstawicielami zbiorowości, których orientacje społeczne, systemy wartości bądź trajektorie życia różnią się tak bardzo, że ich konfrontacja wywołuje oburzenie lub konflikt? Jeśli zamierza się odpowiedzieć na tak postawione pytanie, to należy zacząć od rozważenia kwestii o znaczeniu podstawowym: czy i de a deliberacji ma szanse akceptacji we współczesnym społeczeństwie polskim, czy jest kompatybilna z naszymi systemami wartości i praktykami społecznymi? Czy próby rozwiązywania problemów i dyskutowania kontrowersji w toku debat deliberatywnych napotkają w społeczeństwie polskim opór czy akceptację?

    This article attempts to examine the problem of friendship as it was understood by Seneca in his letters sent to Lucillus. The author scrutinizes the main items in the philosopher’s autobiography to investigate the influence of the events from Seneca’s biography in the shaping of the opinions of the thinker. Lucillus, the addressee of the letters, was actually Seneca’s long-time friend and confidant. The issue of friendship has a long and rich tradition of its own in the antique times. This particular relationship between human beings was of much interest to Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Cicero and many others. Seneca does not venture into an attempt at creating a vision for coherent science related to friendship. What he does though is to furnish a vast array of thoughts concerning such questions as: who is worthy of friendship, why is it worth having a friend and what forms the basis for friendship? Strangely enough, these establishments made by Seneca somehow seem to be more close to us than those in which the philosopher constructs the image of a superhuman wise man, a stoic.

    Th e paper discusses three grand personalities of antiquity: Cicero, Ovid and Seneca in the circumstances of their exile, Th eir attitudes to the punishment received (whose severity varied) were diverse. Nevertheless, all they left a trace in the shape of literary works and letters. Upon reading, one discovers ambiguous attitudes towards their per-sonal misfortunes. Finally, the situation of the exiles and their return may be compared with the archetypal fi gure of Odysseus.

    The paper concerns the question (deals with the question) of the role of proximity in Seneca's tragedies. The title expression "noli me tangere", although not originally Senecan, is given a symbolic nature being quite convenient to eulcidate the peculiar interpersonal distance in Roman tragedies. Avoidance of the physical contact has its roots in the stoical doctrine based on fear of the emotions especially arisen in the mutual human relations. However, it also seems to be obvious that in such a construction of dramatic interaction there is some evidence both of the author's own nature and of his difficult social situation (as an exile on Corsica or during his "inner emigration" toward the end of his life). It is worth mentioning that the "frozen" situation between Seneca's dramatis personae is paradoxically a factor of a rising dramatic effect.

    Cassandra is a peculiar female character in ancient mythology and literature. She appears as early as Homer’s epic, and then incidentally in Aeneid. A would-be lover of Apollo, seer, doomed to disbelief, concubine of Agamemnon, and killed with him on their arrival to Mycenae, she is tragic and it is the tragedy, where she is presented most fully, i.e. in plays by Aeschylus, Euripidesand Seneca. However, her personality traits are so poorly determined that it leaves room for the authors’ actions organising her profile anew. Andso, in Aeschyluss he is a prophetess of her impending death, but she does not try to defend herself. In Seneca, she relates what is covered from spectators’ eyes. She happens to be the symbol of reconciliation, but in Euripides’ Helen she personifies the element of revenge. She is Apollo’s medium, and at the same time she apparently discredits his prophetic power since she was able to cheat him on some occasions. Her attitude towards Agamemnon is vague, because she bemoans his death the same way Helen, whom she hates, mourns Hector’s death. Only the Greek Troades provides an opinion on the beauty of the prophetess. Afterall, Helenand Cassandra’s fatesare mysteriously intertwined. We have the right to suppose that Clytaemestra’s calling Cassandraa female swan is not accidental, although it formally seems to refer to her stage “muteness”.

    The article concerns the question of the formal and moral gods' presence in Senecan tragedies. The problem cannot be solved exhaustively on the literary level only without touching the influence of religious trends on the poet in those days, and connection between Seneca's attitude to religion in his prose writings and dramas. It may be assumed that supreme beings exist in these dramas in various manners: 1) pure moral i.e. as embodiment of justice, 2) semidramatic, as the more or less active dramatis persona, 3) as the negation of traditional gods because of their indifference, cruelty and fallacy. But these so different portraits of upper creatures mentioned above seem to be paradoxically the trial of author's another view on stoicism, so sublimely showed in his dialogues and the philosophical letters.

    The aim of this chapter is to present the mythological poem by Claudianus about Proserpine’s kidnapping and marriage. The poem still encourage the scholars to discussion about its aim and the state of its preservation. I will also focus my attention to the intratextual as well intertextual connections joining the poem with itself and the wide ancient tradition. I will propose two very hypothetical lines of interpretation concerning the De raptu Proserpinae.
