Opis:
In the present work, electrocatalytic properties of Pt-EG and Pt/Mo-EG composite electrodes are studied. These composites were prepared by a three-step synthesis. First, stage-1 $HClO_4$-GIC was synthesized using the chronopotentiometric method. Then, $HClO_4$-GIC was heat treated to obtain expanded graphite. Finally, expanded graphite was coated with platinum catalyst from a water-alcohol solution of $H_2PtCl_6$. $MoCl_5$-GIC synthesized in parallel was subjected to thermal exfoliation to get Mo-EG composite onto which platinum catalyst was dispersed. The X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analyses coupled with scanning electron microscopy were applied for characterizing the obtained GICs and EG-based composites, whereas cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrocatalytic properties of Pt/EG and Pt/Mo-EG composite electrodes in sulfuric acid and sulfuric acid admixed with methanol.

Opis:
Halogenated compounds occurwidely in the biosphere either as natural products or as xenobiotic compounds entering the environment with the use of herbicides and pesticides. In recent years some microorganisms have been reported capable of degrading many of these substrates. Microbial growth on halo-genated compounds requires production ofcatabolic enzymes to cleave the carbon-halogen bonds. The objective of the present study was to examine the ability ofPenicillium sp. G3 (isolated from soil) to degrade chlorinated substrates. Penicillium sp. G3 was able to grow on the investigated halogenated compounds as sole carbon/energy source. Of these, mono-and dichloropro-panes were found to be the best carbon/energy sources. Of the chlorinated acids used for the purpose of the study, 4-chlorobu- tyric and 5-chlorovaleric acids were the best substrates for the growth ofPenicillium sp. G3. All the investigated compounds were degraded with the release of chloride ions to the growth medium. The best substrate for dechlorination was 4-cmorobu-tyric acid. The addition of glucose to the medium stimulated dehalogenation. The results showed that Penicillium sp. G3was not able to mineralize the chemicals tested. Thus, to provide complete mineralization it is necessary to use a mixed popu lation of fungi and bacteria. Having a remarkable ability to dehalo-genate a variety of chlorinated compounds, Penicillium sp. G3 may become an effective component of a mixed culture, thus initiating mineralization of the investigated chemicals.

Opis:
Allium sibiricum is one of the rarest plant species in the Sudetes and Carpathians. Inter simple sequence repeat DNA (ISSR) and morphological analyses were conducted to study the biogeographical relationships between geographically disjunctive populations of A. sibiricum in the Carpathians and Sudetes. The results clearly differentiated the Carpathian and Sudetes populations, but also showed a relatively high level of genetic similarity in specimens within certain groups of the Sudetes and Carpathian populations. The plants collected in the Karkonosze probably belong to a mountain form of A. schoenoprasum morphotype C which inhabits natural sites there. In contrast, the study found morphologically and genetically different plants inhabiting Pilsko Mt in the Carpathians. The plants from the Carpathians were present in scattered sites probably due to the activity of Vlach shepherds and the formation of large pastures. The species enlarged its local range due to this type of anthropopressure and likely hybridized with the cultivated Allium plants introduced by the shepherds. This may indicate that the populations on Pilsko Mt are of a partly anthropogenic character.

The distribution and ecology of charophytes in Lubelszczyzna (Eastern Poland) is described based on herbaria collections, literature data, and the author’s own investigations. Maps showing the distribution of all 22 charophyte species identified so far are presented, as well as the details of habitats ecology. Some data on species frequency, conservation, and threats are added.

Opis:
During cold periods in the Pleistocene Epoch, many plants known as the “relict species” migrated and inhabited new areas. Together with plants, some microfungi also migrated, remaining present on plants and in plant communities. However, the relationship between fungi and the migrating plants (especially host plants) is not well understood. Therefore, we examined the diversity and distribution of microfungi associated with two migratory relict plants in the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains: Salix herbacea L. and Juncus trifidus L. In total, we found 17 taxa of fungi that were collected from nine different locations. Nine fungal taxa were collected on S. herbacea, and eight taxa on J. trifidus. Localities richest of fungi on S. herbacea were Mały Śnieżny Kocioł (Karkonosze Mts, Sudetes) and on J. trifidus, the Tatra Mts (Carpathian Mts). This work provides new insights into the distribution of fungi inhabiting S. herbacea and J. trifidus in Poland.
