Opis:: The starting point for theology consists of philosophy understood as a complex of existential questions on happiness and immortality. Theology seeks reasonable arguments that ought to serve on behalf of God’s answers to existential questions. Thus it is possible to acknowledge reality as its cognitive acts are based on the fact on rationality of faith. Through such a constitutive approach towards religion, theology allows to supplement the academic space with questions with answers that reach beyond the capacity of cognition itself but also touch upon man in man’s own essence. The theological demands to learn the truth provide an appropriate sense to the searches conducted by other branches of science which –when void of the holistic approach towards truth would either fall into epistemo-logical particularism or contribute to creation of ideologies.

Opis:: J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI indicates existential and moral conditions underlying our understanding of God: our original experience in relations with others, the first image of God, instilled in us, but also our personal decisions, including ethical choices. Finally, a man seeks the source of security or a threat to his/her own freedom in God's look (the Eye of Providence). Consequently he/she accepts or rejects God as a witness of his/her own fate. The Pope convinces that a humble consent for being visible constitutes a sign of conversion, which − in turn − leads to understanding God − a Faithful Witness, who can see and save us.

Opis:: The most characteristic trait of Pope Benedict XVI’s epistemological and methodological principles is his tendency to a synthesis and a kind of balance: natural and intuitive that results from his respect for the Truth. We approach this Truth by various ways of complimentary human efforts. If Benedict XVI speaks about the return to sources, he does not make any period of the history of the Church and theology absolute; he warns us against excessive “archeologisation” and “modernisation.” If he proposes a “research system”, he also proposes patience and equilibrium, “internal” direction and internal consequences of thinking (any “externality” appears banal and empty). He proposes “chain bonds” (of epochs, positions, and evolution of thinking) and dialectic holism (only pluralism that is referred to the unity of truth is great). One should notice questions and needs of the present time, but they cannot make up the criterion of answers. The point is to strike a proper balance of emphases between the past and the present. All this deals with the Church and theology whose mission is internally identical, that is the knowledge of God.
