Opis:
Free-surface flow in the vicinity of bridge piers on a fixed channel bed is a classical problem of open-channel hydraulics. This problem is usually analyzed using one-dimensional hydraulic models for steady-flow problems. The aim of this paper is to present a two-dimensional numerical simulation of water flow around obstacles, such as cylinders, which can act as a simplified model of real piers. The depth-averaged Navier-Stokes equations describing unsteady free-surface flow are solved using an explicit scheme of the finite-volume method. The numerical solution prepared for the simulations of unsteady free-surface flows was used here to analyze the case of steady flow. A numerical simulation of flow in the channel with the obstruction was performed for two different inflow discharges determining, respectively, the subcritical and supercritical flow in the cross-section of a channel constriction. In the second simulation, a hydraulic jump was observed downstream of the bridge section. The numerical results were compared with measurements. Water surface profiles were measured for both discharges in the hydraulic laboratory of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology (GUT). Comparisons with laboratory data showed that the proposed approach constitutes a sufficiently accurate and reliable technique for predicting basic flow parameters. The method of two-dimensional modeling of flow in a river channel between bridge piers can be also integrated with the simulation of unsteady flood wave propagation, ensuring a uniform approach to the problem of flood modeling in river valleys. Moreover, a two-dimensional simulation yields detailed information about flow structure near the obstruction, which can be used to better elucidate debris transport and river bed deformation processes.

The numerical solution of full shallow water equation (SWE) including the eddy viscosity terms is presented. In the first part of the paper the solution of the homogeneous part of SWE for discontinuous, rapidly varied flow is reported. The method presented here is based on Roe idea of numerical fluxes of mass and momentum. The numerical solution of SWE on unstructured, triangular mesh is reported and the influence of geometry approximation is examined. The imposing of the boundary condition on a triangular numerical mesh is described in detail. The consistent with finite volume method (FVM) approximation of the viscous part of SWE is presented. The procedure similar to the finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the function derivatives inside the finite volumes. The specific difficulties of source terms numerical integration are studied and some methods to avoid these problems are presented. To integrate the bottom friction term the splitting technique is implemented. The computed results are compared to analytical solution of Saint-Venant equations, experimental data and results available in the literature. Good agreement between these results is observed.

Two numerical simulations of extreme (flash) flood propagation in an urban area are presented. The simulations are performed to recognize some specific features of flow in a built-up area. As the mathematical model of free surface unsteady water flow the shallow water equations are assumed. In order to solve the equations, a numerical scheme based on finite volume method is applied. For approximation of mass and momentum fluxes the Roe method is used. The calculations are examined against the experimental data. The measured variations of water depth at some control points of flooded area are available due to physical modelling. The experiments of model city flooding events were carried out at the hydraulic laboratory of ENEL-CESI in Milan (Italy) in a framework of EC IMPACT project. The aim of these experiments was to simulate a flood in the area where a building group representing a simplified city configuration was introduced.

In order to assess the quality of the numerical results obtained using both methods, the flow in the model city area with the building group representing a simplified town configuration was simulated. The numerical results were examined against the experimental data available due to laboratory depth measurements. The experiment of model city flooding was carried out in the hydraulic laboratory of Gdańsk University of Technology. One explicit and three implicit finite volume method schemes of the Roe type are presented in the paper. The properties and applicability of these methods for modelling unsteady, rapidly varied, open channel flow are investigated. The schemes are used for numerical simulation of one-dimensional extreme flow described by de Saint-Venant equations. The computational results are compared with each other and an analytical (exact) solution to an idealized dam-break problem. The classical versions of general scheme implicit in time - fully implicit and trapezoidal scheme - are not restricted by a stability condition, like an explicit one, however they add some numerical diffusion and dispersion errors to the solution. The modification of parameter , originally proposed for a box scheme of finite difference method, has improved computational properties of the general one-step implicit scheme. This version of finite volume scheme of the Roe type implicit in time can be recommended for modelling and simulation of transient flows in storm sewers and open channel networks.

The former is solved with SIPMLE algorithm of finite difference method using Marker and Cell technique to trace a free surface movement. The latter is solved using the finite volume method. The dam-break (water column collapse) problem on horizontal bottom is investigated as a test case. The calculated results are compared with each other. The numerical simulations are examined against laboratory experiment presented by Koshizuka et al (1995). The possibility of using the described models to simulate rapidly varied flow is discussed.

The laboratory tests were carried out on a model of the slide installed in the Laboratory of Hydro and Environmental Engineering of the Gdańsk University of Technology. Generally, the water flow observed in the open channel and reservoir system can be classified as steady and rapidly varied. The large number of local, hydraulic effects was observed along the whole slide track due to strongly varying bottom slopes and curvatures of channel bends.

Opis:
This paper describes the results of the first part of the research project which aims at developing a hydraulic model for simulation of unsteady flows in storm sewers ranging from gravity flows to surcharged flows resulting with water outflow on the ground surface and propagation of inundation in the flooded area. The paper focuses on the development and assessment of a second-order explicit numerical scheme for unsteady flows in sewers, but only in a single pipe at this moment, without any special elements such as manholes or drop shafts and with no water overflowing problem. The problem of water flow in sewer system pipes is associated with some specific phenomena occurring in conduits during storm events. If the pipes start to be fully filled with water, there is a transition from free surface to pressurized flow. Then, the vice versa effect can be observed. Such transitions are also possible in sewers when the discharge is controlled by control devices, such as gates for example. Moreover, the rapidly varied flow with some hydraulic local effects such as hydraulic jumps or bores can appear during extreme rain episodes. The appropriate modeling techniques have to be applied to solve these problems. The ‘Preissmann slot’ concept is implemented to simulate the pressurized flow. The original and improved McCormack scheme is used for transcritical flow simulation. The calculated results obtained for some benchmark tests are compared with numerical solutions and laboratory measurements published in the technical literature.

Channel flow control and prediction of waterbodies reaction on heavy rainfalls or rapid snowmelt become critical when forecasting the flood risk in urban catchments. A very good example of both problematic and carrying a real threat to urban infrastructure is the Strzyża Creek in Gdańsk. In years 2011–2013 undertook the implementation of storm water monitoring system in the Strzyża Creek basin in Gdańsk. Since that time, it has become possible to collect valuable hydrological data on rainfall and flows in the strongly diversified urbanized districts of the city. Currently, the work is underway to extend the Strzyża Creek monitoring system. The ongoing research project is being realized again in years 2015–2017. The main aims of a project are: development of the methods of flood control, expansion of the existing rainfall-runoff and storage monitoring system in the basin and integrated water quantity and quality analysis, since the Strzyża Creek is one of the main stormwater collectors in Gdańsk. The article presents an example of using continuous data collected by the hydrological monitoring system to determine the annual runoff coefficient. The results were compared with the same parameter estimated on the basis of monthly instantaneous flow measurements and rainfall observations from the precipitation gauge localized in the vicinity of the analyzed catchment.
