Opis:
The genus Eulophia embraces over 230 species distributed through the tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. In Neotropics it is represented by a sole species – E. alta. The aim of the presented study was to evaluate the difference between ecological niches occupied by American and African populations of this species based on the ecological niche modeling. The similarity between the glacial and present niches occupied by E. alta was calculated and the factors limiting the species occurrence were identified. Areas of seasonal tropical forest, tropical savanna and woodland served as refugia for the studied species during last glacial maximum and they were more widespread in Neotropics than in Africa. No significant niche shift after last glacial maximum was observed. The distribution of E. alta in its whole range is restricted mainly by temperature seasonality. The differences in the niches occupied by African and Neotropical populations of E. alta suggest preglacial disjunction of the species range and independent adaptation of both groups. Despite the significant range disjunction of E. alta the species is characterized by relatively high degree of niche conservatism.

Opis:
A new genus of Orchidaceae (Polystachyinae), Isochilostachya, is described. It is morphologically similar to Polystachya Hook. but is distinct by the narrower, grass-like leaves arranged in the upper part of the stem, long and acuminate floral bracts and sepals, and long clavate or capitate hairs densely arranged on the lip. A comprehensive description of the new genus is provided. A list of examined specimens and information about distribution, habitat, and altitude for each species are presented. A position of the members of the new genus in the cladogram recently obtained from molecular analyses of Polystachyinae is briefly discussed. A taxonomic key to Polystachyinae is included. Eleven new combinations on species level are validated. Eight lectotypes are designated. Most of the species of Isochilostachya are endemic to particular mountains of the Eastern Arc (Eastern Afromontane hotspot) in north-east Tanzania therefore a brief discussion about their restricted distribution is provided.

Opis:
In order to estimate the best germination conditions of Encyclia aff. oncidioides seeds, five different media (Fast, Knudson C modified by Vajrabhaya, Murashige and Skoog, PB2 and modified Vacin and Went) with different concentrations of plant growth regulators such as benzyladenine (BA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3) were tested. No beneficial effect was observed when BA and NAA were applied to the germination medium and GA3 inhibited germination. The effect of light, activated charcoal, coconut water and casein hydrolysate on seed germination was also studied. The growth rate of seedlings on three different media supplemented with activated charcoal and plant growth regulators was checked. The applied plant growth regulators had no beneficial effect on the further growth of seedlings. Fast and PB2 media with 0.2% activated charcoal proved to be the best for E. aff. oncidioides seed germination, seedling development and plantlet propagation.
