    In her article, Katarzyna Szkaradnik analyses the memoirs of the pioneers of the Polish national movement in the area of Cieszyn Silesia, and also the memoirs of subsequent social, cultural, and educational activists written before the end of World War I. Szkaradnik examines these texts by focusing on the representations of the idea which the authors were spokesmen for, i.e., Polishness as a cultural legacy as well as Poland as a promised land where the people of Cieszyn Silesiawill gain due rights. The metaphors “awakening” and “rebirth” naturalized the bond between these people and Polishness, which was supposed to last thanks to, among other things, Polish religious publications, despite Silesia’s separation from so-called Motherland. In this respect, the memoirs have persuasive-didactic functions in that they help to build and strengthen the national identity. Szkaradnik examines the rhetorical strategies used by the activists (and scholars) of the said movement as well as the system of values which they propagate. The fact of the national activists’ being servants of an ideology is accompanied by their ideology of service, akin to the positivist idea of educational and economic work. Importantly, most of the authors descended from local people of humble origin and they gave up on the chance of social advancement in order to help their countrymates to attain social, political, and intellectual emancipation.

    The situation of Zaolzie, a historical and geographical part of Cieszyn Silesia, is complicated. Despite the years of appurtenance to Czechia and Chechoslovakia there is still active Polish residence and both nations continue to share their history. In this article I intend to show the tense Polish-Czech relationship in Zaolzie presented in Dziennik. Zapiski bibliofila i dziejopisa 1963–1995 by Jerzy Pilch, a writer and essayist from Ustroń. This will be shown in the context of local memory and activist memory stressing the Polishness of the region. It will be possible to analyze how the ideological dimension of the identity is interwoven with an effort to bring about a narrative restoration of Zaolzie, divided by an arbitrary border.

    The aim of this article is to reconstruct and interpret the vision of Silesians as Others contained in the texts of the sociologist Jan Szczepański. The article begins by pointing out Silesia’s lack of homogeneity and complex relation with Poland, as well as Szczepański’s predominant identification of Silesia with his native Cieszyń and his mythologizing of it as a borderland mainstay of Polishness. In this context, there is a clear parallel in Szczepański’s writings between Silesians and Indians (that is, the maintenance of a separate culture by the autochthonous people in spite of efforts to discourage their otherness). At the same time, Szczepański shows the culture of Cieszyń to be different from the dominant Polish model, being based mainly on values connected with the Protestant ethos: industry, reliability, order, and rationality. The author explains how presentation of an idealized Cieszyń community emerges in Szczepański’s writings as the project of ‘becoming another’, a path toward understanding one’s own cultural roots in order to use them creatively to shape real conditions.

    W artykule zaprezentowano różne odniesienia kategorii inności i obcości pojawiające się w tekstach socjologa Jana Szczepańskiego oraz bibliofilów i historyków amatorów Jana Wantuły i Józefa Pilcha. Postacie te łączyło pochodzenie z ewangelickich rodzin chłopskich w Ustroniu na Śląsku Cieszyńskim, a ponadto więzi rodzinno-przyjacielskie. Autorka rozważa, jaki wpływ na funkcjonowanie tytułowych kategorii w ich pismach ma wychowanie na pograniczu państw i kultur, jak z perspektywy południowych kresów konstruują oni figurę Obcego, a równocześnie wyobrażenie własnej inności wobec Polski. Owa inność zasadza się m.in. na identyfikacji z odmiennym modelem kultury, związanym z etosem protestanckim. Na tym tle widać również problem stosunku bohaterów szkicu do innych religii, który odsyła do kwestii solidarności, ujrzenia w innym drugiego „ja” oraz ujrzenia inności w sobie. Tę ostatnią Szczepański, Pilch i Wantuła usiłują zgłębiać w tekstach autobiograficznych, a drogą ku temu okazuje się specyfika Śląska Cieszyńskiego. Autorka pokazuje, że inność nie tylko wewnętrzne naznacza tożsamość, ale też dzięki temu pozwala lepiej zrozumieć, kim się jest.
    The article’s aim is to present different applications of the categories of otherness and strangeness appearing in texts of a sociologist Jan Szczepański as well as book-lovers and historians-amateurs Jan Wantuła and Józef Pilch. Each of them was born in an evangelical peasant family in Ustroń in Cieszyn Silesia, and they were connected by family ties and friendship. The authoress considers how their growing up on cultural and national border influenced functioning of title categories in their writings, and also how they build the figure of Stranger from a perspective of borderland as well as the image of their own otherness to Poland. It consists i.a. of identification with the different model of culture, related to Protestant ethos. On this background the problem of their relation to different religions appears which leads to the matter of solidarity, seeing in the Other the second “me” and otherness in “me.” The latter is probed in Szczepański’s, Pilch’s and Wantuła’s autobiographical texts, and the way toward that is Cieszyn Silesia’s specific. The authoress shows that otherness not only marks identity but also permits better understanding who one is.

    Temat artykułu stanowią dynamiczne relacje między perspektywą prywatną a ideologiczną, jakie pojawiają się w tekstach socjologa Jana Szczepańskiego oraz bibliofilów i historyków amatorów Jana Wantuły i Józefa Pilcha. Wymienione postacie łączy pochodzenie z ewangelickich rodzin chłopskich z Ustronia na Śląsku Cieszyńskim i więzi rodzinno-przyjacielskie, a zinternalizowane w dzieciństwie wzory kulturowe przejawiają się w ich tekstach i wpływają na treść obydwu perspektyw. Ideologia bowiem jest w artykule rozumiana nie tylko jako doktryna narzucona np. przez władze PRL, lecz jako zespół poglądów służących orientowaniu zbiorowego działania. Z takiego stanowiska autorka przygląda się zarówno dziennikom, wspomnieniom, listom, jak artykułom i esejom bohaterów szkicu, aby udowodnić brak odpowiedniości: zapiski osobiste – perspektywa prywatna, publikacje – ideologiczna. Rozważa najpierw kwestię prawdy diarystyki, cele pisania dzienników oraz zależność ich treści od zamierzonego wykorzystania np. w publikacjach. Szczepański, Pilch i Wantuła nie tylko zawarli w oficjalnych wydawnictwach wizje rzeczywistości niezupełnie zgodne z oficjalną ideologią, ale przede wszystkim w ramach owej ideologii krzewili ideologię przez siebie wybraną. Mobilizowali społeczeństwo do dbania o dobro wspólne przez rzetelną pracę, gospodarność, oszczędność itp., wiążąc te cechy z etosem protestanckim i cieszyńskim. Na koniec autorka wskazuje, jak teksty bohaterów artykułu oraz ich biografie symboliczne są obecnie używane do kształtowania wspólnoty lokalnej w ich rodzinnych stronach.
    The subject of this article is the dynamic relations between the private and ideological perspectives which appear in the works of sociologist Jan Szczepański, as well as book-lovers and historians Jan Wantuła and Józef Pilch. The figures were colligated by a background, namely evangelical peasant families in Ustroń in Cieszyn Silesia, and also family ties and friendship. The cultural patterns assimilated by them in childhood are manifested in their texts and influence the character of the perspectives mentioned. In this article an ideology is understood not only as a doctrine imposed, for example, by the Polish People’s Republic’s authorities, but as a combination of beliefs serving to orient collective activities. From this viewpoint the article explores the diaries, memoirs, letters, articles and essays of this study’s heroes to show the lack of an connective thread in the paradigm: personal notes – private perspective; publications – ideological perspective. Firstly, the article examines the question of diaries’ truth, the aims of journal writing, as well as the dependence of its content on planned uses, including in publications. Szczepański, Pilch and Wantuła not only offered visions of reality contained in official publications which were not completely in line with the official ideology, but above all as part of this ideology they promoted an ideology chosen by them. That is, they mobilized the society to care for the common good by means of solid work and thriftiness, what they associated with their Protestant and Cieszyn Silesia ethos. Then the article demonstrates how the texts of this article’s heroes and their symbolic biographies are being used to shape the local community in their homeland at the present time.
