Opis:
The Earth’s thermal field, particularly the heat flow density (HFD), is a valuable source of information on geodynamic processes within the Earth’s crust, conditions for hydrocarbon generation and on ar eas and formations promising for geothermal energy. Lithospheric thermal and rheological modelling is critically dependent on high-quality surface heat flow values. The available maps of heat flow density, not only for the area of Poland, are not reliable from the point of view of the current state of knowledge. The main critical factorin determining heat flow density is the knowledge of depth distribution of thermal conductivity. We used a new method of estimating the thermal conductivity from well logging data interpretation with control calibration based on laboratory determined thermal parameters. We con sider that the observed vertical variations of HFD in the shallow part of profiles (<2000 m) are mainly due to a Holocene warming. We have proposed a new original method of determination of HFD based on modelling of palaeoclimatic ef fect. Using this method, we have calculated new HFD values for 308 deep boreholes and completed a new map of this parameter for Poland, which is the first of this type. We propose to undertake a critical analysis of all the existing heat flow data not only for Europe that may change the present understanding of global heat flow.

Opis:
The Udryń PIG 1 research borehole drilled in northeastern Poland (54°14’49”N, 23°03’29”E, 223 m a.s.l.) revealed a permafrost layer, at least 93 m thick, within the sedimentary succession below a depth of 357 m. The base of the permafrost has not been reached at 450 m depth, where the drilling stopped, so its total present thickness remains unknown. The relict permafrost, unexpected in this part of Central Europe, is in the ice-water transition phase at a temperature slightly below the 0°C. Analysis of geophysical and hydrogeological data indicates the possibility of preserving the permafrost in the central part of sedimentary cover of the Suwałki Anorthosite Massif over an area of probably 50 km2. Preliminary results of geothermal modelling indicate maximum palaeothickness of permafrost at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum of probably ~600 m. The development of such a thick permafrost results both from a very low average annual temperature in the Weichselian Glaciation and a very low terrestrial heat flow density. It is very probable that similar zones of deep relict permafrost occurrences, undetected so far, may exist in other areas of the Precambrian Platform not only in Poland, but also in the neighbouring countries.

Opis:
Climate changes are accompanied by temperature changes on the Earth’s surface. Over the past cen-tury the Earth’s surface temperature has been increasing. Is the observed warming simply a natural climatic fluctuation or is it tied to industrialization? A key to the understanding of the climate changeis to understand past climate fluctuations. Temperature changes at the Earth’s surface spread into the subsurface by heat conduction, and manifest at a later time by perturbations in the background of temperature field. Boreholes of several hundreds or thousands of meters depth contain a record of responses to ground surface temperature history over thousands or even of hundreds of thousands years, back to the last glaciation. Geothermal data provide an important supplement to traditional proxy records of surface temperature change. The paper presents results of our investigations of this problem starting from daily temperature fluctuations to the temperature of Weichselian glaciation.
