Opis:
The coal mine waste dumps located in the southern provinces of Poland pollute groundwater with metals. As a result of batch experiments presented in the paper, it can be said that it is possible to remove chromium and copper from the groundwater (which is affected by acid mine drainage, thus characterized by low pH) with the use of zero-valent iron in permeable reactive barrier technology. The contaminants are removed from the aquifer by the flow of groundwater through a reactive barrier filled with a special reactive material. Rapid metal removal likely occurred due to the reduction and the precipitation/co-precipitation and/or due to the adsorption onto the iron metal surface or/and onto the iron corrosion products. In accordance with the research it has also been found that in more alkaline environment, the oxidation of Fe(0) proceeds slower. A rapid decrease of the redox potential as well as the increases of pH have also been observed in the batch tests when the dose of Fe(0) in solutions increased.

Opis:
The industrial dumping sites located in the southern provinces of Poland pollute groundwaters with metals. In the article, the possibility of groundwater (polluted by metals) treatment with the use of Permeable Reactive Barrier Technology has been presented. In this technology, the contaminants are removed from the aquifer by a flow of the groundwater through a PRB filled with a special reactive material. The wastewater (which simulated groundwater) circulated through the column filled with zero-valent iron in the laboratory tests. During the tests, the treatment processes proceeded. Chromium, copper, nick-el, cobalt, lead, cadmium and zinc, occurring in the water as cations and anions, have been removed in the iron bed. The rapid metal removal has likely occurred due to the reduction and precipitation/co-precipitation and/or due to adsorption onto the iron metal surface or/and onto the iron corrosion products. Barium Ba2+ was the only metal, which has not been removed from the wastewater in the column. A rapid decrease of the redox potential and oxygen concentration as well as an increases of the pH value and stabilizations have also been observed during the flow of water through the column. Due to the Fe/Fe2+ half reaction during the treatment processes, the iron concentration has increased as well.

Opis:
The subject of the research covered in this paper is the removal of copper (Cu2+) cations from water at low pH (initial values of pH 3 and 6) by means of zero-valent iron. The chemical states and atomic concentrations of solids formed on the surface of zero-valent iron, and the type of deposited polycrystalline substances have been analyzed with the use of XPS and XRD. The type of process causing the copper removal from water at low pH, corresponding to the effect of acid mine drainage, has been identified by analyzing the changes of physicochemical parameters and specified chemicals content in water. Cu2+ was removed from water for the initial pH of 6 was much more effective than at lower pH. The formation of CuxFe3-xO4 , where x≤1, and to a lesser degree Cu2O, Cu0 and/or CuO and/or Cu2S, were the basic processes of the removal of copper at almost neutral pH of water (pH about 6), while the formation of copper in metallic form and Cu2O, as well as probably CuO, were the basic processes for lower pH (pH about 3). The adsorption of Cu2+ on the surface of shell covering square-shaped cold-rolled steel sheet cell was an additional process causing the removal of copper from water at almost neutral pH.

Opis:
Batch tests have been used to assess the level of the removal of metals (copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, and chromium, in cationic and in anionic forms) from water at low pH values affected by acid mine drainage. The predominant processes which result in the removal with the use of zero-valent iron (Fe0) in Permeable Reactive Barrier Technology were evaluated. The most probable processes for each metal have been presented in drawings. There are: reductive precipitation leading to the metallic form, co-precipitation mainly with iron in the form of oxides and/or hydroxides and adsorption on the surface of iron corrosion products or on the surface of zero-valent iron.
