Opis:
Zofia Kaczorowska was born on 11 September 1902 in Warsaw. She finished secondary school in 1921. Then, in 1924 she started studying at the Mathematical-Natural Faculty of the University of Warsaw. At the same time she worked at the State Meteorological Institute. In 1928 she was granted a scholarship from the Institute, with the obligation of specialising in the domain of meteorology. In 1932 Zofia Kaczorowska obtained the title of doctor of philosophy on the basis of the publication entitled Meteorological causes of the summer swells of Vistula river (in Polish), and look up the work in the Climatological Department of the State Meteorological Institute, where she stayed until the outbreak of the World War II. During the academic year 1938/39 she was also a research assistant in the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of the Main School of Farming Economy in Warsaw. Ass. Professor Zofia Kaczorowska, D.Sc., produced a significant scientific output, despite the objective difficulties in the maintenance of continuity of the research work, caused by her long illness, the period of war, and the very intensive teaching work. Ass. Professor Zofia Kaczorowska made a very valuable contribution to the education and schooling of the young geographers, and especially of the climatologists, for whom she conducted during twenty years the courses in: meteorology for the students of the Ist year of geography, and climatology for the IInd year, in the climate of Poland for the students of the IVth year, specialising in physical geography, as well as in elements of meteorology and climatology for the students of geology specialising in the Quatemary. She was in charge of the Master's seminars and workshops for the students of the climatological specialisation. She was also very active in field exercises and entry examinations. The attitude of Zofia Kaczorowska with respect to students was always very cordial, and she would especially take care of those who were in need. The ancient and the current employees of the Department of Climatology of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies, University of Warsaw, her pupils and associates, paid homage to Ass. Professor Zofia Kaczorowska, D.Sc., during her funeral in February 1993 (she passed a way on 11 February 1993 in Warsaw).

Opis:
The fundamental research conducted within the Department of Climatology of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies (previously Institute of Geography) at the Warsaw University concerns primarily the climate of Poland. Tnis theme is contained in the research plans of the department since 1952. The theme would only undergo modifications as to its more precise formulation, referring frequently to the fresh currents in climatology. The research in the domain of climate of Poland was initiated by Professor Romuald Gumiński, the first head of the Department of Climatology of the Institute of Geography at the Warsaw University (1951-1952). The main research directions taken up at the Department of Climatology under the leadership of Professor Wincenty Okołowicz (the head of the Department in the years 1953-1973), with considerable assistance from Ass. Professor Zofia Kaczorowska (who worked at the Department between 1951 and 1972), include: 1. The structure and regionalisation of the climate of Poland, 2. The climate of the north-eastern Poland, 3. The climate and bio-climate of towns. The primary object of research at the Department is nowadays constituted by the problem of natural and anthropogenic changes in the climate of Europe, with special consideration of Poland. Within this domain attention should be paid to such subjects as: 1. Empirical models of spatial and temporal variability of climate, 2. Periodical changes of climate and their causes, 3. Secular trends in climate changes, 4. Anthropogenic climate changes, 5. Forecasts of changes in the climate of Poland in the 21 st century. All of these research problems are being approached through both individual and team projects. The most important results of the teamwork include, first of all, the 14 volumes of the Alias of interdependencies of the meteorological and geographic parameters in Poland (in Polish), published in the years 1974-2000. A sui generis synthesis of the individual work on the climate of Poland is constituted by the two issues of "Prace i Sudia Geograficzne", published (in Polish) under the titles of New methods of inquiry inio the climate of Poland ( 1997) and From the study of the climate of Poland 91998). The first of these issues was published on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Department, while the second - to commemorate the 100th anniversary of birth of Professor Romuald Gumiński.

Opis:
The aim of the study reported was to identify the characteristic features and the singularities of climate in Poland, resulting from its geographical location in the moderate latitudes of Central Europe. Approximation of the field of air temperature and humidity, cloudiness and precipitation, as well as wind velocity (averages for the years 1951-1960, 1951-1980) was obtained with the help of equations of hyperplanes of regression. In modelling of air temperature regression polynomials of the fourth order with respect to three location coordinates: latitude, φ, longitude, λ, and elevation above sea level, H, were exceptionally applied as well. Introduction of the absolute elevation H into the polynomials of regression, side by side with the geographical coordinates of latitude and Iongitude, φ and λ, significantly enhanced the precision of models, because air temperature is strongly correlated with the elevation variable. This step constitutes a significant contribution of the Department of Climatology from the University of Warsaw to the perfectioning of the statistical models describing the field of meteorological variables. Polynomials of higher orders with respect to the location coordinates (latitude and longitude as well as elevation above the sea level, φ, λ. and H) proved to be the excellent instrument for the study of climate. In contradistinction to the hyperplanes of regression they do not only describe the main characteristics of the field, but also its regional and local variability. The equation of the regression hyperplane (coefficients of partial regression) is defined by the average latitudinal, longitudinal and hypsometric gradients over the areas considered. On the other hand the regression polynomials of higher orders (e.g. of the fourth order) define the local latitudinal, longitudinal and hypsometric gradients at every point of the area studied. A novelty in terms of climatological literature is constituted by the gradient maps for the three kinds of gradients, elaborated for the first time on the example of Poland. Until now the influence of the polar oceanic and continental air masses was being characterized by the isotherms brought to the sea level, with application of the temperature decrease held constant over time and space, amounting to 0.5°C per 100 meters of altitude (Romer, 1949). The report here summarized presents the isolines of the hypsometric gradients on the area of Poland which change over the period of a year. Of essential practical significance are the horizontal gradients at the real altitudes, determined on the bas is of the approximating functions without the altitude above the sea level. The vectors indicate the directions of increase of air temperature on the territory of Poland. They can be used in the forecasts of geographical distribution of air temperature in Poland. The differences between the measured values of air temperature and the ones calculated from the regression polynomials of the fourth order (i.e. the residuals) have been treated as the measures of local deformation of the field by natural factors (mountain peaks, valleys, water bodies) as well as the anthropogenic ones (large towns).

Opis:
The main purpose of the study was to define the most important features of the climate of Europe, which derive from geographical position and altitude above sea level. To begin with, we discuss the thermal features of Europe's climate which result from the continent's location at moderate latitudes. The research was conducted on the basis of average monthly values of air temperature in 30-year periods, 1961-1990. The fields of real sunshine, air temperature, atmospheric precipitation, atmospheric pressure and wind velocity were described using empirical models - regression polynomials of the second degrees y = f (φ), y= f (λ), y = f (H) for three coordinates: latitude φ, longitude λ and altitude above sea level H. They simulate both the zonal variability of air temperature T(φ) and precipitations P(φ) (which depends on the incoming solar radiation) and the impact of the Atlantic Ocean and the altitude T(λ), P(λ). The equation of the regression hyperplane has been a good tool for the inverstigation of general features of Europe's climate: y = a₀ +a₁ φ+a₂ λ + a₃ H. Coefficients of partia! a₁, a₂, a₃ - are components of gradients of meteorological variables; a₁ - meridional gradient, in °C/1° φ; a₂ - latitudinal gradient, in °C/1 °λ; a₃ - hypsometric gradient, in °C/100 m.

Opis:
Wincenty Okołowicz was born on 26 July 1906. He made a truly remarkable scientific and teaching career, including the leadership of the Department of Climatology at the University of Warsaw. Professor Wincenty Okołowicz: published altogether 118 papers, among which, as perhaps the most important let us mention the ones devoted to (positions 1 through 9 – in Polish, 10 - in English): 1. Soil temperatures in Vilna (1937) 2. Climatic changes in Europe ( 1939) 3. The geomorphology of the middle reach of the river Wilia (1956) 4. Climatic zones of the world ( 1962) 5. Cloudiness above Poland (1964) 6. Climatic subdivision of Poland ( 1966) 7. Amplitudes of air temperature in Poland (1967) 8. General climatology ( 1969) granted second-degree award from the Ministry 9. Climatic maps for the National Atlas of Poland, regarding air temperature (39 maps), cloudiness (6 maps), snow cover (4 maps), all of which were published between 1973 and 1976, 10. Climate of Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary (1976). All of the above publications belong to the most frequently cited ones in both Polish and foreign literature of the subject, and two of them (nos. 5 and 8) were translated into English upon the request from foreign customers. Professor W. Okołowicz rendered during his lifetime valuable services in both teaching and coaching the young generations of geographers and climatologists. He was active first at the University of Nicolaus Copernicus (Toruń), and then at the University of Warsaw. For 23 years he was the head of the Department of Climatology of the University of Warsaw. During this period he conferred Ph.D. degrees in Climatology upon 15 candidates, and M. Sc. degrees upon 125 students. He was twice appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and the Sciences of the Earth, in the years 1960- 62 and 1964-66. In acknowledgement of his merits as a teacher and educator, and of his ability in organising sound teaching, as well as in promoting the staff of young scientists, he was granted in 1964 an ad-personam second-degree award of the Ministry of Sciences. Furthennore, in recognition of his contribution to the development of Polish Climatology, and of his general merits in the field of didactics, education, and social sciences, Professor Okołowicz was awarded in 1954 the Officer' s Cross of Merit, and, in 1966, the Commander's Cross of Polonia Restituta. In 1967 he was promoted to full professorship. In April 1974 W. Okołowicz fell ill, and the illness, unexpectedly, cut him completely off the professional life until his passing away on 3 September 1979. We parted with him, a frank, kind, and respected person, an engaged teacher and distinct scholar, with a truly deep regret.

The more important research results on the impact of building development and vegetation on the local climate, conducted in Warsaw in the years 1959-2009 by the Department of Climatology, are presented. Majority of the issues associated with determining the deformation of air temperature limits (urban heat islands), humidity and wind vector areas, because of buildings in housing estates, located in various parts of the city, were resolved in master's thesis. Areas with high building density are characterized by slow cooling and warming pace, especially during the summer months. Spatial changes in the urban heat islands in the east-west direction well describe the latitudinal profiles (W-E) of air temperature differences (ΔT > O) between the city and its urban fringe. The urban heat island ΔT does not appears till 5PM, initially in the Central City District. Spatial diversity of effective temperature and catathermal cooling allowed to mark off in housing estates („Stawki”; „Służew nad Dolinką”, „Sady Żoliborskie”) places with perceptible conditions, e.g. heat, warmth, comfort, cold.
