Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of environmental and management conditions on the mineral composition of the hair coat of Polish Konik horses at the Research Station for Organic Farming and Conservation Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Popielno. The hair mineral content was compared in Koniks raised in a barn and a nature reserve. The foals bred in the reserve were divided into two groups based on the area occupied by the herds from which they originated. Hair samples were collected from 53 Koniks born over two consecutive years. Green forage and hair samples were analyzed to determine the concentrations of macroelements (P, K, Mg, Ca and Na) and microelements (Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe). Water quality was evaluated based on its pH and the concentrations of N-NO3, N-NH4, P-PO4, K, Ca, Mg, Na and Cl. The hair coats of foals raised in the reserve had a significantly higher content of K and Na than the hair coats of stabled Koniks. Significant differences in the concentrations of K, Na, P and Ca in the hair coat were also noted between the two groups of horses in the reserve. The hair coats of foals born and raised in a stable had a higher content of Fe, Mn, and Cu. No significant differences in the hair macromineral content were found between the sexes. As regards microminerals, higher concentrations of Fe and Mn were determined in the hair coats of mares. Environmental and management conditions exerted a significant effect on the mineral composition of the hair coat of Polish Konik horses. Differences were observed not only between foals raised in a barn and a nature reserve, but also between Koniks kept in the reserve.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different vegetable protein sources in complete finisher diets on the fattening performance of pigs, carcass quality and the nutritional value of pork. A feeding trial was performed on 72 finishing pigs divided into 3 experimental groups, which were fed complete finisher diets containing the following sources of vegetable protein: group S – genetically modified soybean meal, group P – low-tannin pea ‘Albatros’ and 00-rapeseed meal, group B - high-tannin faba bean ‘Nadwiślański’ and 00-rapeseed meal. Performance was evaluated based on daily gains and feed efficiency for the fattening period from 65 to 105 kg body weight. Defined indicators for slaughter carcasses, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum were assessed. Significant decrease (by 5.1%) in the average daily gain of pigs was observed in group B. Backfat thickness was also significantly higher in the carcasses of group B pigs, in comparison with group S. The intramuscular fat content of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum was significantly lower in group P than in the remaining groups. The replacement of genetically modified soybean meal with low-tannin pea ‘Albatros’ contributed to a decrease in the concentrations of saturated fatty acids (P < 0.05) and an increase in the levels of unsaturated fatty acids in the intramuscular fat of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum. A more desirable UFAs / SFAs ratio and lower total cholesterol was observed in the meat of pigs fed a diet containing mixtures of seed peas and faba bean.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary protein restriction in finishing pigs on the fat content, fatty acid profile, and atherogenic and thrombogenic indices of m. longissimus dorsi. A feeding trial was performed on 45 crossbred [(Polish Landrace x Polish Large White) x Duroc] finishing pigs with an average initial body weight of 65 kg. The animals were divided into experimental groups and were fed finisher diets with different levels of total protein and total lysine: group S-c- standard protein level, O – protein level reduced by 15% relative to the standard level, O+AA – protein level reduced by 15% and supplemented with crystalline lysine to the standard level. The intramuscular fat content, fatty acid profile and health-promoting properties of m. longissimus dorsi were determined. A 15% reduction in total protein levels in diets for finishing pigs insignificantly increased the intramuscular fat content of m. longissimus dorsi, but had no influence on the total concentrations of saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The supplementation of low-protein diets with crystalline lysine decreased the intramuscular fat content of m. longissimus dorsi, decreased the concentrations of margaric-oleic acid (C17:1) and gadoleic acid (C 20:1), and increased α–linolenic acid (C18:3) levels. Meat from pigs fed a low-protein diet supplemented with lysine was characterized by a lower (more desirable) n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio and provide more atherogenic and trombogenic properties.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of an organic form of mineral supplement containing copper, zinc and manganese on the concentration of these elements in the coat (hair) of Polish Konik horses. Possible impact of the rearing conditions of 24 Polish Konik foals (which originated from stables and nature reserves), their sex and duration of the supplementation on the coat’s mineral composition was considered. The research included 24 horses: 12 stabled (six fillies and six colts) and 12 captured in a nature reserve (seven fillies and five colts). Ten samples of fodder and 60 samples of coats were analysed. The influence of the rearing system on the concentration of elements in the coat was observed, for example stabled horses had a higher content of copper in the coat while the content of zinc and especially manganese was lower. All horses, both reared in a stable and from the nature reserve, showed higher copper concentrations in their coat (P ≤ 0.05) after supplementation with copper, while an increased amount of zinc was observed only in animals reared in a stable. All horses (both stabled and wild ones) demonstrated an evident change in the manganese content of their coat after supplementation with a chelate. The content grew significantly (P ≤ 0.01) with the supplementation time. An interaction between the sex and chelate supplementation time was observed only in the case of manganese administered to animals reared in a stable.
