- This article analyses the difficulties with operationalizing the concept of cultural identity. This operationalization is necessary if one wants to research the impact of cultural identity on social behaviour, with a particular reference to economic behaviour. The article comprises two parts. The former focuses on the concept of cultural identity in the context of inheritance of cultural norms and behaviour patterns. The latter discusses problems in defining cultural identity and in defining empirical variables that can help research cultural identity. The paper does not provide a survey of the existing stock of empirical research of the topic. The abundance of such studies forces the author to confine herself to only signalling major problems relating to researching cultural identity.
