Opis:
Metriorhynchid crocodylomorphs were an important component in shallow marine ecosystems during the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous in the European archipelago. While metriorhynchids are well known from western European countries, their central and eastern European record is poor and usually limited to isolated or fragmentary specimens which often hinders a precise taxonomic assignment. However, isolated elements such as tooth crowns, have been found to provide informative taxonomic identifications. Here we describe two isolated metriorhynchid tooth crowns from the upper Valanginian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Štramberk area, Czech Republic. Our assessment of the specimens, including multivariate analysis of dental measurements and surface enamel structures, indicates that the crowns belong to two distinct geosaurin taxa (Plesiosuchina? indet. and Torvoneustes? sp.) with different feeding adaptations. The specimens represent the first evidence of Metriorhynchidae from the Czech Republic and some of the youngest metriorhynchid specimens worldwide.

Opis:
Sedimentological development of the Verovice Formation (Czech Moravia) is presented, according to Early Cretaceous geotectonic-eustatic changes in the proto-Silesian Basin. Those processes were a consequence of a gradual rebuilding the architecture of the Alpine-Carpathian realm. The geological events well correspond with the global sequence stratigraphy.

Opis:
The Štramberk Limestone (Tithonian–lower Berriasian) was developed on a northerly located, isolated intra-Tethyan carbonate platform. It is composed of various facies that can be observed in olistoliths and blocks embedded in the Cretaceous flysch of the Outer Carpathians in Moravia (Czech Republic). Corals, microbialites, microencrusters and synsedimentary cements contributed on various scales to the reef framework. The importance of corals and some microencrusters to the formation of the Štramberk reef complex is well recognized, while other components received less attention in previous studies. Two end members of boundstone types are described from the Kotouč Quarry, near Štramberk. Boundstone type A is dominated by phaceloid (branching-type) corals, encrusted by microbialites and microencrusters, in particular photophile species (“Lithocodium-Bacinella”, Koskinobullina socialis Cherchi et Schroeder, Iberopora bodeuri Granier et Berthou). Boundstone type B is composed of microencrusters, microbialites and synsedimentary isopachous fibrous cements, while corals are absent or subordinate. Microencrusters [Crescentiella morronensis (Crescenti), Labes atramentosa Eliášová, Perturbatacrusta leini Schlagintweit et Gawlick, Radiomura cautica Senowbari-Daryan et Schäfer, thin encrusting calcified sponges] are main biotic components of the microencruster-cement boundstone. Some identified microencrusters are known only or mostly from intra-Tethyan carbonate platforms. Except for C. morronensis, other common microencrusters in the coral-microbial boundstone (type A) are rare in the microencruster-cement boundstone (type B). The depositional setting of boundstone type A corresponds to a low-energy environment of an inner platform. Boundstone type B, until now not recognized in the Štramberk Limestone, was developed in a high-energy, upper fore-reef slope environment. Other important facies in the Kotouč Quarry are reef-derived breccias: matrix-supported breccia and clast-supported breccia with radiaxial-fibrous cement (showing some similarities to Triassic “evinosponges” cement), interpreted as being dominantly synsedimentary (pre-burial). The preliminary studies by the present authors, supported by observations under cathodoluminescence, highlight the significance of synsedimentary cementation for the formation of a boundstone framework (type B) and the stabilization of fore-reef, slope deposits.

Opis:
Over 100 ammonites were collected from a block of bedded shallow-water Štramberk Limestone at a new location at the Kotouč Quarry, near Štramberk (Silesian Unit, Czech Republic). Berriaselline neocomitids, including Berriasella jacobi, B. oppeli, Tirnovella allobrogensis, T. cf. allobrogensis, Delphinella consanguinea, Pseudosubplanites cf. grandis and Malbosiceras cf. asper, are the most abundant species in this ammonite association. The olcostephanitid, Spiticeras blancheti, is rare. The index species for the Early Berriasian, B. jacobi, occurs in large numbers. On the basis of the present study, the upper boundary of the stratigraphic range of the Štramberk Limestone in the type area is dated as early Berriasian (ammonite Berriasella jacobi Zone). Ammonites with ages younger than early Berriasian have never been found in the Štramberk area. The deposition of the Štramberk Limestone in the Štramberk area came to an end during that period.

Opis:
Recent discoveries of ammonites in the Štramberk Limestone in the type area of their occurrence near the town of Štramberk supplement existing data on the Tithonian age of the limestones. Franconites cf. fascipartitus occurs in the lower part of the Lower Tithonian (Neochetoceras mucronatum Zone). Lemencia ciliata has a zonal character in the upper part of the Lower Tithonian. Richterella richteri is a subzonal species of the upper part of the Lower Tithonian in the Mediterranean and Submediterranean areas (Semiformiceras fallauxi Zone). All of the new discoveries are referable to the faunal associations of the Submediterranean bioprovince, and are in agreement with existing knowledge of it. Sexual dimorphism was seen in the genus Richterella, with the recognition of both macroconchs and microconchs in the type species of Richterella, i.e. R. richteri. The stratigraphic position of these recent ammonite discoveries in the Štramberk Limestone at the Kotouč Quarry does not support the stratigraphy of the limestones based on the distribution of calpionellids, as previously assumed by other authors. The recent collection of ammonites confirms that the Štramberk Limestone belongs to the lower Tithonian and lower Berriasian and also represents the lower Tithonian as a shallow-water facies.
