Opis:
The catch rate and body length of Anoplotrupes stercorosus and Trypocopris vernalis were studied in 2018 on permanent plots established in 2003 in Scots pine stands left for spontaneous succession in the Piska Forest (N Poland). The plots comprised treatment A – severely disturbed stands (canopy cover of 10−30%), treatment B – moderately disturbed stands (canopy cover of 40−60%) and treatment C – the least disturbed stands in which all or nearly all trees survived (canopy cover of 70−90%). Each treatment class was replicated six times. In addition, we included a Scots pine plantation established in 2006 after the soil preparation as a stand in the earliest phase of succession. The following hypotheses were set: (1) severity of stand disturbance affects the body size of both species and (2) in the surviving remnants of stands (later phase of succession development) the body length of both species is greater than in disturbed stands and in the young plantation. No differences between the catch rate of both species in different treatments was detected (tab. 1 and 2). However we found significantly longer body of T. vernalis. The increase in the difference between the length of both species in the least disturbed stands as well as in the late stages of stand development was found (fig. 1 and 2). The direct effect of the LAI and inversely proportional effect of soil temperature on the catch rate and length of the body of A. stercorosus and, to a lesser extent, T. vernalis were observed (fig. 1). The high catch rate of A. stercorosus and the length of its body was linked with the soil covered only with forest litter (which occurs in dense stands with a high LAI index) (fig. 2). The catch rate of T. vernalis was correlated with the predominant nitrophilous Deschampsia fexuosa, which suggests the preferential occurrence of T. vernalis in ‘open’ stands with a high level of solar radiation. In turn, the length of T. vernalis body correlated with a high proportion of Calluna vulgaris, which may suggest a dependence of this parameter on light reaching the soil. The above observations indicate that in the production cycle of Scots pine stands, T. vernalis prefers open stands (especially clear−cuts, young plantations), while A. stercorosus is more often met in dense stands. The catch rate of both species is not suitable for zooindication research, while the length of their body is suitable. The higher the stage of ecological successive of the pine stand, the greater the difference in the body length of these species.

Opis:
In this paper the effect of different methods of soil scarification in a clear−cut area were studied. The following soil preparation techniques were applied: the soil cutter, the active soil plough, the traditional method with use of LPz plough, and the manual scarification of soil in circles surrounding the stem of the future young tree. The effect of management of the residual heaps of branches was also tested. Branches were either put in prisms in the original shape or, having been previously chipped, equally distributed over the entire area of the clear−cut. Additional studies focused on the effect of the time of clear−cut execution (winter or summer) on the condition of epigeic carabid communities. The least regressive effect to analysed communities was observed after the application of the point manual soil scarification. The clear−cuts carried out during the winter season, to a greater degree, favours the forest carabid fauna, preserving them in a structure more resembling the forest communities. More distinctive positive effect on the carabids is observed after putting the residual heaps of branches in prisms; the latter gives shelter for the carabid fauna and constitutes the refuge spots for it.

Soil respiration and organic matter decomposition in the soil prepared by four different methods was investigated. Soil was prepared with the cutter, active plough, deep furrowing (strips) plough and manual disk ploughing on areas felled in summer or winter, with and without retained branch piles, as well as in the clumps of old−growth and young−growth stands. The soil respiration rate increased following stand removal, while it was reduced after soil preparation process. The highest CO2 respiration and organic matter decomposition were noted in the variants with the soil cutter or manual disk plough, while the lowest – in the variant with deep furrowing (strips) plough.

The colonisation and movement of ground beetles on a cutting area with two retained old−growth clumps of 4 and 7 are were investigated using the CMR method. The method enabled to evaluate the trapping level of small non−forest species. The paper discusses the use of old−growth clumps during the colonisation of the cutting area by big forest species and concurrent "avoidance" of these areas by small non−forest species. Stimulating role of the parallel and perpendicular ploughing furrows in the process of the colonisation the cutting area by forest and non−forest species as well as differences in their perception of site micro−differences were also analysed. The results confirmed assumed hypothesis in case of non−forest species (avoidance of clumps), forest species C. arcensis and non−forest species P. caerulescens and individuals from the genera Amara and Harpalus as far as the influence of furrows is concerned. Differences in the perception of the cutting area between forest and non−forest species were also proved.

Carabidae were used as a zooindicator to evaluate different soil preparation techniques applied to farmland prior to afforestation: full deep ploughing (MBS), full ploughing to a depth of 25 cm using agricultural tractor (OR), full ploughing to a depth of 25 cm with subsoil ploughing (ORP) and raising of soil horizons A0 and A1 (NW). The studies were conducted 4 and 5 years after afforestation. The total number of caught beetles was 13 869 individuals from 68 species. Taking into consideration the trapping ability, mean individual biomass and colonization by xerophylous or forest species the deep ploughing BMS and subsoil ploughing ORP was found to have the greatest impact on the carabid recolonisation rate and site degradation.

The trapping of weevils on cutting areas using different soil preparation methods was tested. A soil cutter mixing mineral soil with humus best stimulated the weevil trapping. The methods connected with breaking up the humus layer: manual disk ploughing or using an active plough and ploughing with deep furrowing (strips) stimulated weevil trapping to the smallest degree. The piles of branches on the felled areas had no effect on the increase of weevil trapping, while the winter felling, unlike the summer one, increased the trapping level. On the basis of the results obtained in the study the specified methods to improve the cutting management were proposed.

The experiment analysed magnitude and structure of invertebrate fauna caught in different empty bottles and cans left by tourists in the four different forest ecosystems. Empty boxes that previously had contained several types of beverage (mineral water, apple juice, bread derived dark brown beverage, coke and beer) were installed. Each bottle was repeated three times. They were subsequently examined on three occasions for invertebrates every two weeks. A total of 1069 specimens belonging to 27 species or taxa were captured. The highest catchability was recorded in fresh mixed coniferous forest. The presence of saprophagous and predatory species in the emptied beverage boxes suggests the establishment of detritus trophic chains. The species composition similarity of invertebrates captured in the empty bottles depended on the site fertility and, only to a minor degree, on the type of beverage. The PCA showed that another factor influential in the species composition of captured fauna was the degree of transparency of the box. The dominant species was A. sterocorosus; this beetle was most frequently captured in the mixed coniferous forest type. The experiment showed very high danger for the forest invertebrate fauna from the side of empty bottles left by tourists.

During the period from 2003 to 2011 observations of carabid community regression and selected habitat indicators were conducted on 15 plots in stands that had been disturbed by a hurricane and on 15 plots in control stands. Regression of carabid communities delayed 3−4 years was observed, consisting in increases in the number of species and the proportion of xerophilous species and reductions in the percentage of forest fauna and in mean individual biomass. Only after 7 years did these indicators begin to show a tendency in the reverse direction, albeit not very strong, indicating that carabid communities had begun to regenerate.

The effect of late cleanings and early thinnings on carabid assemblages in a stand was established one year and three years following the treatment. Cuttings have caused changes in the composition of the main carabid species. The number of the representatives of the xerophilous, Palaearctic and Holarctic species has declined while the share of individuals of the autumn development type and of forest species has increased. Following the cuttings the SCP index and the Mean Individual Biomass have attained higher values. The results suggest that tending cuttings in the stand have a favourable effect on the carabid assemblages.

Exceedingly violent winds can result in windbreak and in windthrow. It has happened in summer of 2002 in Pisz Forest District (north part of Poland). Strong wind damaged about 30 000 hectares of pine forest. In most situations, damaging wind resulted in windthrow rather than windbreak. In total 30 plots were selected for the studies, 15 plots in Pisz forest (damaged by wind) and 15 control plots in Maskulińskie District Forest (not damaged by wind). There were distinguished 5 age variants of stands, all of them in three recapitulations. The five age classes of stands were: I class (20−30 years old), II class (30−40 y.), III class (40−50 y.), IV class (50−70 y.) and V class (above 70 years old). In total 4 000 carabids individuals belonging to 46 species were caught during studies. The wards analy− sis showed substantial diference of carabid assemblages occurring in damaged and non damaged forest. In damaged forest, small zoophages, hemizoophages, an open area or eurtyopic species, xerophilus species were frequently observed. Substantial differences in mean individual biomass of assemblages occurring in damaged and non damaged forest were also observed.

The objective of the article is to present different types of tourist routes and infrastructure elements preferred by the society basing on the results of the nationwide survey, which was conducted in 2013 on a representative sample of 1000 individuals over the age of 18. The sample was of random−amount character. Respondents evaluated the usability of several types of tourist objects (routes and paths) as well as different devices constituting their equipment. The survey also included the question which allowed the evaluation of usability of 10 infrastructure elements, which increase the quality of leisure in forests. Statistical analyses included General Line Model (GLM) or ANOVA and post−hoc comparisons with Tukey HSD test. In case of equivocal results of analyses, data was retested with PCA, which was selected upon checking the length of gradient with DCA. Data was analyzed with regard to the respondents' age, education and material status. The most desirable routes turned out to be walking trails and hiking routes (fig. 1). Results indicate that the most useful infrastructure objects include waste bins and information boards, while the least usable are playsets for children and fitness equipment (fig. 4). The most useful infrastructure elements are: signs and then ex aequo: car parks, places for animal observation, rest facilities and viewpoints, and the least needed: children's playgrounds, rope parks, and paintball sites.

The study included 15 isolated islands, grouped in five size classes. Trapped individuals were identified to species and measured and weighted. The number of carabid species was higher in the ecotone zones as compared with the island interior. Reduction in total number of carabid species was observed with increasing size of an island. The share of forest related carabid species was positively correlated with the size of an island; similar was the pattern concerning the large zoophages, the European and brachypterous species. The larger an island, the higher value of the mean individual biomass index (SBO) and the index of Progressive Features Sum (SCP). With the growing size of the islands, the carabid communities are placed still further to the uppermost right hand corner in the SCP/SBO diagram (fig. 2). Response of carabid communities to different size forest islands has shown that the smallest islands which favor the establishment of stable forest communities are 0.63 ha. Hence, it is to consider in the practice of forest management to create islands not smaller than that area (this may be established at the level of about 1 ha, for the practical purposes).

The studies were conducted on three plots, established in 100−130 year old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands (type: Pinetum vaccinio−mirtyllosum) situated in the southern and central parts of Lithuania (Kaunas and Vare˙na districts). Their canopy closure was from 0.6 to 0.8. The study areas comprised of a mature stand (control) and clear−cut felled in spring 2016 and tilled after 5 months. Altogether 30 litter samples (five per stand) were taken from randomly chosen locations twice: the first sampling took place one month after cutting (in May) and the other after five months (in October). In total, 921 adults and larvae representing 49 species of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) were collected. The higher number of individuals was harvested in control stands (fig. 1a, tab. 1). The collected individuals were significantly more abundant during the second sampling in all studied stands (fig. 1b, tab. 1). In the same way the higher number of species was detected in control stands, but significant differences were observed only during the first sampling. Amount of forest species differed insignificantly between control stands and clear−cuts, while the rate of zoophagous species was significantly higher in control stands (fig. 2a, tab. 1). The number of mixophagous species was significantly higher in clear−cuts during the second sampling (fig. 2b−c, tab. 1). Both the felling and the tilling had a distinct impact on transformation of rove beetles assemblages in clear−cuts comparing to the mature stands (fig. 3). Ischnosoma splendidum, Othius subuliformis, Stenichnus scutellaris, Trimium brevicorne, Xantholinus tricolor, Philonthus cignatus and Sepedophilus sp. were revealed as associated with mature pine stands sites, while only Acrotona parens and Amischa analis were connected with clear−cuts (tab. 2). We propose to use these two species as indicators of strong transformation of rove beetles assemblages due to clearcutting and management. The results of the study proved that negative impact of clearcutting on number of individuals and number of forest species in rove beetles assemblages is distinct even in short period after cutting as well as that transformation of rove beetles assemblages increase after cutting of stand, especially after tilling.

Opis:
Driven by social and economic changes, which have taken place for the last 30 years, the European forest management objectives have been redefined. By the action of public opinion, forest management, increasingly frequently and in a broader range, focuses on public benefits from forests. One of the most important functions is the possibility of leisure and recreation in the forest. The purpose of the research was the analysis of the hypothetical readiness to finance the leisure−related function of forest based on WTP (Willingness To Pay) amount. A question, which enabled the assessment of a social value of leisure−related function of forest, was asked to a random−quota sample of 1000 people over 18 years of age during the nationwide survey carried out in 2013 by TNS Polska. Out of 1000 respondents, the WTP>0 was declared by 29% respondents. Surveyed persons indicating forest with poorer infrastructure declared higher values calculated per household (PLN 13.59 ±0.84) than respondents who selected a better managed forest (PLN 12.86 ±0.88, PLN 12.91 ±1.46). The average WTP amount per person for respondents with the university degree (bachelor and master degree) was PLN 6.23 ±0.48, whereas for respondents with lower education, it was on the level of PLN 5.26 ±0.25. The average WTP also depended on the age of respondents. It was PLN 11.42 ±1.43 for 20−year−olds per family, whereas for 40−year−olds it was PLN 14.16 ±1.05. The average WTP per person increased along with the age of respondents; from PLN 4.37 ±0,42 (20−year−olds) to PLN 6.00 ±1.11 (80−year−olds). Disregarding the top WTP value per household of respondents in the worst financial situation (20.00 ±10.00), the average WTP value per household increased from PLN 10.26 ±1.69 (in poor financial situation) to PLN 14.55 ±2.97 (very well−off).
