- The decolorization process under test carried out by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and its effect on the survival of bacteria was studied. Aqueous solutions of reactive dyestuff (Reactive Blue 81; 100mg/dm[3] ) were decolorized by using O3, O3/H2O2, O3/UV, and H2O2/UV as oxidizing agents. Each oxidation process was discontinued after complete decolorization had been achieved. The toxicity of the intermediates formed in the course of the AOPs was determined by the growth test method. The results showed that untreated dyestuff had no toxic effect on the bacterial cultures made use of in the study (E. coli, P. putida, B. subtilis) up to the dye concentration of 1000 mg/dm[3]. Decolorization in the presence of O3 or O3/UV exerted detrimental effect on E. coli. In the presence of O3/HO2 or H2O2/UV, bacterial growth was seriously inhibited (from 48 to 67%).
