- In the course of archaeological excavations conducted in Ledniczka Island located on Lednica Lake, biogenic deposits were discovered, which had accumulated in the moat of a cone settlement. A core was removed from the hollow and it was subjected to paleobotanical analyses. The litology of deposits and the bioindicative nature of subfossil plant taxons demonstrated that their accumulation had been accompanied by significant fluctuations of the water level. The level had often been higher than the present one of Lednica Lake. The telmatic environment o f accumulation had not been conducive to the preservation of macro and micro fossils of plants and animals. The biggest fraction of subfossil seeds and fruits was composed of species representing the synatropic flora of the island. Antropogenic taxons were also well represented in pollen spectra. In addition, significant fractions of herbaceus plant pollen were detected, including mainly grasses, and small amounts of tree pollen. In the process of deposit accumulation, the isle had had no forest stand; there had existed local bushes of lilac, and probably willow scrubs on the lake shore. Lower strata of vegetation had been dominated by heliophytes. Results of palinological analysis indicate that the accumulation of the examined deposits took place in the Middle Ages, which is consistent with archaeological datings.
