Opis:
Year 2004 is established as the European Year of Education through Sport. Many people believe that participation in sport is beneficial to the process of education, indeed. But it has been also suggested that participation in sport may be detrimental for personality of young people. In this paper we would like to survey sport through the prism of pros and cons brought about by it to the process of education and to put forward some suggestions on how to release educational values from sport.

Opis:
In the face of maintaining a high level of morbidity of civilization diseases, the etiology of which is to a large degree connected with scarcity of physical activity (obesity, coronary heart disease, type II diabetes mellitus etc.), an education dealing with participation in physical culture has become an important social task. In order to be efficient the process should be aimed at developing psychological and behavioural determinants of physical activity but also building social relationships enhancing an active life style. One of the mechanisms through which social environment may influence physical activity of children and youth is social support. The paper presents the results of the study of four kinds of social support for physical activity (instrumental, informational, emotional and evaluational) received by pupils at the age of 14 to 18 from their parents, peers and physical education teachers. The results suggest that the most often received form of support is emotional one (especially from parents and peers) and the least frequent – instrumental support, which is a more direct form of support than the above mentioned one. Moreover, the frequency with which respondents receive social support for their physical activity significantly differentiates particular categories of significant others, with the most rare support from physical education (PE) teachers. Also an interesting phenomenon was observed of parents’decreasing social support for physical activity of girls as they are growing up.

Cel badań. Porównanie skłonności do ryzyka wśród osób uprawiających różne dyscypliny wspinaczkowe: buldering, wspinaczkę lodową/drytooling, alpinizm/taternictwo, wspinaczkę tradycyjną (określaną także mianem „na własnej asekuracji”) oraz wspinaczkę sportową. Materiał i metoda. Badaniami objęto 284 osoby, w tym 69 kobiet. Zastosowano metodę sondażową, technikę ankietową, jako narzędzie badawcze wykorzystując Test Zachowań Ryzykownych Studenskiego. Wyniki. Wnioski. Choć wspinaczkę zalicza się do sportów ekstremalnych, osoby uprawiające różne jej odmiany wykazują zróżnicowane skłonności do ryzyka.
Background. The purpose of the study was to compare risk propensity among people practising various types of climbing: bouldering, drytooling, alpinism, traditional climbing, and sports climbing. Material and methods. The study involved 284 climbers, including 69 women. The participants filled in the Risky Behaviour Test by Studenski. Results. The mean test outcome was 67,44, which, when related to sten norms by Studenski, means strong risk propensity among climbers and preferences for risky behaviours. No gender differences were observed, except for anxiety uncertainty, which was significantly higher in female subjects. It was also the only factor that turned out not related to the age of the climbers. Differences between types of climbing concerned the compulsion to risk and awareness of participation in risk. In both cases, the highest scores were observed in alpinists and the lowest in sports climbers. Conclusions. Although climbing is generally recognized as one of the extreme sports, the risk propensity is different among climbers representing various types of this activity.

Background. The aim of the study was to establish the attitudes and knowledge of sports coaches with reference to doping and anti-doping policies. Material and methods. The study included 100 coaches representing 11 disciplines. They filled in an anonymous questionnaire assessing their knowledge of and attitudes toward doping. Results. The coaches’ overall anti-doping attitude is positive and quite strong (M = 4.55, SD = 0.65). The strongest partial attitude was toward sanctions for breaking anti-doping rules (M = 5.35, SD = 0.91), the weakest – toward the possibility of succeeding without doping (M = 3.92, SD = 1.35). In the three categories of knowledge items, the percentage of correct responses were similar: 54.17% for athletes’ rights and duties, 53.57% for doping control procedures, and 53.33% for banned performance-enhancing drugs. The main sources of information for coaches were the Internet and television. Conclusions. The anti-doping attitudes of coaches are positive but it seems necessary to increase their knowledge, especially with planned educational programs.

Opis:
Cel badań. Celem badań było dokonanie diagnozy motywów, jakimi kierują się kobiety uczestniczące w zajęciach ruchowych w fitness klubach oraz postrzeganych przez nie barier takiego uczestnictwa. Materiał i metody. W badaniach wzięło udział 95 kobiet w wieku 37,40 ± 12,15 roku. Zastosowano metodę sondażową jako narzędzia, wykorzystując Inwentarz Motywacji do Ćwiczeń Fizycznych EMI-2 w adaptacji Zając oraz kwestionariusz barier ćwiczeń fizycznych własnego autorstwa. Wyniki. Najsilniej odczuwaną barierą okazał się brak czasu 2,81 (± 1,35). Bardzo rzadko do rzadko odczuwane były bariery fizyczne (M = 1,59 ± 0,85) i motywacyjne (M = 1,56 ± 1,19). Wśród motywów podejmowania ćwiczeń dominowały: „pozytywne zdrowie” oraz „rewitalizacja”, natomiast motywami, które najsłabiej kierowały zachowaniami kobiet były: „rywalizacja” i „zyskiwanie uznania społecznego”. Wnioski.
Background. Physical activity belongs to the most important health behaviours. The aim of the study was to reveal the motives and barriers of women attending fitness classes. Material and methods. The study included 95 women aged 37.40 ± 12.15. They filled in an anonymous questionnaire assessing their motives of exercising and their perceived barriers. Results. The most common barrier was time constraints (M = 2.81 ± 1.35). Physical (M = 1.59 ± 0.85) and motivational (M = 1.56 ± 1.19) barriers are rarely and very rarely experienced. The weakest and practically irrelevant barriers were emotional (M = 1.22 ± 1.03), social (M = 1.00 ± 1.20), and availability-related (M = 0.99 ± 0.96). To identify motives for exercise participation, the Polish version of Exercise Motivations Inventory 2 was used. The most important motives were positive health and revitalization, whereas social recognition and competition turned out the least significant. Conclusions. The findings can bring implications to promote women’s exercise behaviours.

The main purpose of this study was to examine how the relatively new initiative supporting active leisure of people, i.e., Family Recreation Zones, is perceived by its users. Data were collected from 215 persons aged 13 to 96 (M=44.19, SD 18.08). For nearly nine in ten persons Zones are the only space where they spend their leisure time actively. The main attractors are free access and the open air. Interestingly, for many respondents the proximity of playgrounds was not a benefit but rather a barrier to visiting Zones. Other barriers were the season of the year, a modest range of exercise devices, their damage, poor illumination, a perceived lack of safety and a lack of professional support during exercising.

Teachers, including physical education (PE) teachers, are at risk of burning out in their work. The consequences of this syndrome have a negative impact on the teacher themselves and on their students. Therefore it is very important to identify factors that may prevent its occurrence. Self-efficacy is considered one such factor. The aim of the study was to determine if self-efficacy specific to PE teachers is related to their burnout. The study was conducted using a survey method, with the use of the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale [PETES] and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. A total of 401 PE teachers were surveyed. PE teachers turned out to be rather moderately burnt out, except for one dimension - a reduced sense of personal accomplishments - which in almost the whole sample reached high values. Regression analyses conducted for all three dimensions of burnout were significant, explaining from 4% up to 10% of the variance. The dimension of accomplishments was positively predicted by two kinds of self-efficacy: applying scientific knowledge in teaching PE, and teaching students with special needs. Emotional exhaustion was significantly and negatively predicted by assessment efficacy, and using technology efficacy, and positively by accommodating skill level differences of efficacy. Finally, depersonalization was negatively predicted by instructional efficacy.

The research was focused on determination if persons at various stages of motivational readiness for leisure physical activity differ by the length of time spent in front of a TV/PC computer screen and attitudes towards such entertainment. Subject to research were 139 high school students aged 16 to 18. The findings refute the thesis that modern media tend to draw young people away from active leisure. Persons not undertaking physical activity spend an equal amount of time in front of a TV set or a PC as those undertaking physical activity systematically and regularly. In addition also the persons avoiding straining themselves place a high value of physical activity to their health.

The study was aimed at examining the usefulness of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) in predicting exercise intentions and exercise of women in fitness classes. On the theoretical plane it broadens state of knowledge on the TPB, but the findings are also important for the development of more effective interventions to promote and maintain exercise engagement of women in fitness centers. The study was carried out in the second quarter of 2016 in two fitness centers in Katowice, Poland. The participants were 95 women aged 17–66 (M = 37.40 ±12.15). The obtained data were analyzed with the use of structural equation modelling (path analysis). Significant predictors of intention to exercise were perceived behavioural control and attitude, with the strongest effect observed in the former. The findings of the study suggest that interventions should focus on increasing the level of control over women’s exercise behaviours and shaping attitudes toward them.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ON in the rock and sport climbing community. population using two different questionnaires. Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale (PL-DOS) was used to assess ON. The study involved 236 climbers (including 159 men and 77 women, 67.4 and 32.6%, respectively), with an average age of 34.7±9.2 years. The group was divided into groups according to criteria such as the preferred type and style of climbing, participation in climbing competitions or the volume of training undertaken. Orthorexia was diagnosed in 12.7% (n=30) of climbers, with a mean score of PL-DOS of 32.8±2.4 with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 31.9 to 33.7. Another 25% of the respondents were diagnosed with ON risk (mean±SD 26.8±1.5, 95% CI 36.4-27.2). It was not found that the adopted stratification variables significantly differentiated the groups distinguished on their basis. The only exceptions were age and weekly training frequency. However, the effect sizes were small in both cases.

Assessing the correlates of older adults’ leisure-time physical activity (PA) is essential to effectively promote these populations’ active lifestyles. Few studies have been published about PA correlates of older adults in Poland. The aim of this study was thus to identify correlates of self-reported PA of older adults. Participants were 577 members of senior citizen clubs aged 70.72±8.04 years. Questionnaires were used to collect data of PA, psychological, perceived social and environmental variables related to PA. Results of regression analyses with four levels of PA as dependent variables and psychosocial factors as independent variables showed that all models were significant, explaining the variance from 8% (walking) to 20% (VPA). Age and accessibility of fitness facilities were significant predictors in the final regression equation used to explain all levels of PA except walking. Time spent on TV predicted walking, LPA and MPA.

The aim of the study was to measure the association among Health Belief Model (HBM) variables and self-reported physical activity of young adults. A survey research protocol was employed. Participants were 391 university students (245 females), 19–22 years old (–x = 21.41±3.49). Analyses revealed that the strongest predictor of physical activity is self-efficacy, followed by perceived benefits and the perceived barriers. Other HBM variables, such as the perceived susceptibility or perceived severity, were not associated with physical activity. On the basis of the obtained results it may be concluded that the HBM as a model of avoiding diseases is not adequate to explain and predict physical activity of young adults.
